如B篇中有to look the otherway;E篇中的in the great majority of等。

I really love my job because I enjoy working with small children and like the challenges and awards from the job. I also think my work is important. There was a time when I thought I would never have that sort of career(职业).

I then found myself a job, looking after two little girls.

I wasn’t an excellent student because I didn’t do much schoolwork. In my final term I started thinking what I might do and found I didn’t have much to offer. I just accepted that I wasn’t the type to have a career.

It wasn’t too bad at first. But the problems began when I agreed to live in, so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in the evening. We agreed that if I had to work extra hours one week, she’d give me time off the next. But unfortunately, it didn’t often work out. I was getting extremely tired and fed up, because I had too many late nights and early mornings with the children.

One Sunday, I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school wih me. I told her about my situation. She suggested that I should do a course and get a qualification(资格证书) if I wanted to work with children. I didn’t think I would be accepted because I didn’t take many exams in school. She persuaded me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience counted for a lot and I got on a part

time course. I had to leave my job with the family, and got work helping out at a kindergarten.

My teenage son Karl became withdrawn after his father died. As a single parent, I tried to do my best to talk to him. But the more I tried, the more he pulled away. When his report card arrived during his junior year, it said that he had been absent 95 times from classes and had six falling grades for the year. At this rate he would never graduate. I sent him to the school adviser, and I even begged him. Nothing worked.

One night I felt so powerless that I got down on my knees and pleaded for help. “Please God, I can’t do anything more for my son. I’m at the end of my rope. I’m giving the whole thing up to you.”

I was at work when I got a phone call. A man introduced himself as the headmaster. “I want to talk to you about Karl’s absences.” Before he could say another word, I choked up and all my disappointment and sadness over Karl came pouring out into the ears of this stranger. “I love my son but I just don’t know what to do. Directions:Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A - F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.

  A. Goods for auction sales

  B. Definition of bidding

  C. Way to sell more goods by auction

  D. Auction sales in history

  E. Brief introduction to autions

  F. Making a larger profit as an auctioneer

  1.

Acutions are public sales of goods, conducted by an officially aproved auctioneer.

He aske the crowd assembled in the auction-room to make offers, or" bids", for the various items on sale. He encourages buyers to bid highter figures and finally names the highest bidder as the buyer of the goods. This is caled" knocking down" the goods, for the bidding ends when the auctioneer strikes a small hammer on a table at which he stands.

  2.

The ancient Roman probably invented sales by auction, and the English word comes from the Latin auction, meaning "increase". The Romans usually sold in this way the goods taken in war. In England in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, goods were often sold "by the candle", a short candle was lit by he auctioneer, and bids could be made while it stayed alight.

  3.

Practically all goods whose qualities vary are sold by auction. Among these are coffee, skins, wool, tea, furs, silk and wines. Auction sales are also usual for land and property, furniture, pictures, rare books, old china and similar works of art.

  4.

An auction is usually advertised beforehand with full particulars of the articles to be sold and where and when they can be viewed by potential buyers. If the advertisement can not give full details, catalogues are printed and each group of goods to be sold together called a" lot", is usually given a number. The auctioneer need not begin with Lot I and continue in the order of numbers:he may wait until he notices

the fact than certain buyers are in the room and then produce the lots they are likely to be interested in.

  5.

The auctioneer’s services are paid for in the form of a percentage of the price the goods are sold for. The auctioneer therefore has a direct interest in pushing up the bidding as high as possible. He will not waste time by starting the bid- ding too low. He will also play on the opponents among his buyers and succeed in getting a high price by encouraging two business competitors to bid against each other.

  Passage 6

People usually think of "stress’ as something the world inflicts on them. Worries are blamed for all kinds of illness,

From asthma(气喘) to headaches, from high blood pressure to stomachache. And we often blame other people for making

is feel bad: when we call someone “a pain in the neck”, we are describing the physical and psychological effect they have on us.

But although it is tempting to regard stress as some nasty germ attacking us from outside, the truth is that we are

largely responsible for what stress does to our bodies. Once, we make ourselves aware of how our bodies respond to worry,

fear, anger and fatigue ( all of which are forms of stress), we can start learning to relax.

Pains in the neck are a very common stress complaint. Some people get a pain in the neck from driving, others from

working at an office desk. I call “ keyboard neck” , which

tends to strike when I am hunched over my computer keyboard worrying about an approaching deadline. (Arthritis or bone injuries might also give you a pain in the neck, dcourse, but I suspect that these are a much less common cause than muscular tension. )

It would be easy to blame these pains on

“had pasture (姿势)” . Hunching your shoulders up to your ears is certainly not a relaxing way of sitting. But we should first think about why we adopt this posture. In fact, it is an instinctive way of reacting to a situation, which alarms or worries us. It is a defensive posture—and many people find that they tend to make their hands into a fist or grip their steering wheel or the arms of a chair at the same time.

  Passage 9

Psychological noise refers to forces within a communicator tor that prevent the ability of expressing or understanding a message correctly. For example, an outdoor person might exaggerate (夸大) the size and number of the fish he caught in order to convince ( = make... believe) himself and others of his talents. In the same way a student might become so upset upon learning that she failed a test that she would he unable ( perhaps “unwilling” is a better word ) to understand clearly where she went wrong. Indeed, psychological noise is a very important communication problem.

Butt the linear (线性的) model, in spite of its advantages, incorrectly suggests that communication flows in one direction, from sender to receiver. Although some types of messages ( printed and broadcasted message, for example) do flow in a one-

way, linear manner, most types of communication, especially the interpersonal variety, are two-way exchanges. To put it differently, the linear view takes no notice of the fact that receivers react to messages by sending other messages of their own.

Consider, for example, the importance of a friend’s yawn as you describe your romantic problems. Or imagine the blush you may see as you tell one of your dirty jokes to a new friend.

Nonverbal ( Not using words ) behaviors like these show that most face —to—face communication is a two-way affair. The discernible (可辨别的) reply of a receiver to a sender’s message is called feedback. Not all feedback is nonverbal, of course. Sometimes it is oral, as when you ask an instructor questions about an upcoming test or volunteer your opinion of a friend’s new haircut. In other cases it is written, as when you answer the questions on a midterm exam or reply to a letter from a faraway friend.

  1

Which of the following is considered to be a psychological noise?

  A. A person likes to tell others his achievements.

  D. a person does not have to notice a receiver’s reply

  答案:A

Dr. Panayiotis Zavos told the public on October 5 that he could create the first cloned human before the end of the year. He is an expert on human copying and breeding from the University of Kentucky in the United States.

His workers have been stopped from carrying out research in most European Union countries, but Zavos said that fact was not slowing progress.

“We are only interested in helping a father who does not have the ability to have a biological child of his own.”

Although the women’s rights movement in the United States is thought of a recent development, its beginnings becket hack over one hundred and seventy years. At that time United States. By the time many women were attending college,

and increasing numbers were entering professions which had before been forbidden to women. A limited number of women even held high academic and government positions. In spite of all this progress, “career women” were largely restricted to (受限制) teaching, nursing, and office work.

The Women’s Liberation movement, which developed during the 1960s, has focused on economic rights such as “equal pay for equal work”. In addition, some groups have stressed psychological and social equality. The main purpose of Women’s Liberation is to free women from the restricted role which society has given to them. It seeks to enable them to choose between a career and the home—or to choose the two. It claims that society as a whole would benefit if every person were allowed to develop his or her abilities and use them to the full. One phase of the business cycle is the expansion phase. This phase is a two-fold one, including recovery and prosperity(繁荣). During the recovery period there is ever-growing expansion of existing facilities (设施), and new facilities for production am created. More business is created and older ones expanded. Improvements of various kinds are made. There is an ever-growing optimism about the future of economic growth. Much capital is invested in machinery or “heavy”industry. More labor is employed. More raw materials are required. As one part of the economy develops, other parts are affected. For example, a great expansion in automobiles results in an expansion of the steel, glass, and rubber industries. Roads are required, thus the cement and machinery industries are stimulated. Demand for labor and materials results in greater prosperity for workers and supplies of raw materials, including farmers. This increase purchasing power and the volume of goods bought and sold. Thus prosperity is diffused among the various portions of the population. This prosperity period may continue to rise and rise without an apparent end. However, a time comes when this phase reaches a peak and stops spiraling upwards.

This is the end of the expansion phase.
