  2016广西崇左县高考英语阅读理解(二轮)练习(1)

  阅读下列短文,(AB、C和D),,A

Throughout my childhood, my father was extremely fat, and my family life was filled with finding new ways to lose weight. But on the weekends I spent with my grandmother, everything changed.

Whenever I arrived at my grandmother' s house, she would run down her front porch stairs, saying, " My little beauty. " I heard her say " beauty" so often that I thought it was her name, so that's what I called her. The name stuck, and soon everyone in her small neighborhood knew my grandmother as Beauty.

I remember walking hand in hand along the shops on Devon Avenue in Chicago to get everything ready for our special Saturday dinner. Beauty was very popular in her neighborhood, which made me feel happy to be with her. It seemed that everyone loved my grandmother, from the baker to the butcher. The men at the fruit stand showed us what was in season and ripe, and the ladies at the beauty shop flattered my grandmother on her beautiful hats, telling her she looked exactly like Ruth Gordon.

Beauty was the perfect name for my grandmother. Everywhere she went, she made people smile. We walked along Devon Avenue, buying ingredients for our dinner. Beauty would tell me stories about my family. She talked abouther daughter, my mother, who hated to cook, and how my father would sometimes eat an entire pizza before going out to dinner because he worried that he would be hungry while waiting for his food to arrive at the restaurant.

My grandmother was always kind to me and was my biggest fan. Though my parents were very busy with their own lives, my grandmother and I would sit around the kitchen table cooking and talking about our feelings for hours.

Eventually my treasured weekends with my grandmother came to an end, when my father landed a job at an ad agency in New York City. But it turns out that the nine years I spent in Beauty's kitchen were enough for my lifetime.

Frederick Bailey was born around 1818 in Maryland. He was born a slave but later became one of America’s greatest leaders. His mother died when Frederick was about seven years old.

Frederick then lived with his grandparents, Betsey and Isaac Bailey. He said that his grandparents had a loving home and were respected by other slaves in the area. Because of this, he did not realize at first that someone owned him and the others.

In 1836, Frederick met and fell in love with a free black woman named Anna Murray. Murray had a job cleaning other people’s homes. She gave Frederick money to help him escape by getting on a train to New York City.

When Frederick Bailey reached New York he changed his name to Frederick Douglass to hide his identity from slave capturers (捕获者). Anna Murray joined him and they were married. They settled in New Bedford, Massachusetts and had five children. In 1841, he attended the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society meeting in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Douglass was unexpectedly asked to give a speech to describe his experiences as a slave. Most of the supporters were white. The crowd praised him.

Maggie was very glad that James was not a frequent visitor to the house. So far as the children were concerned, they had a mystery about him that stirred their imagination. He stirred Maggie’s anger, however, so that she often said to her husband, “It’s mercy that brother of yours doesn’t come oftener.”

In fact James came once a year, unexpectedly, around eight o’clock in the evening, and he stayed for six hours of close discussion with his brother. His arrival was a signal to the children that their bedtime would be delayed. Not that he ever spoke to them or played with them. He took no notice of them, as if he was unable to see children, at least until the time came for him to go. Instead, after his first greeting and a careless kiss, James took no notice of Maggie either, except to add, “You’ll be getting on with the supper, Maggie.” Such was his regard for her.

Maggie paid him back in her own way. She kept the children up, the four of them, to keep her company, she said, but of course they sang and made a noise and broke the endless sound of James’s voice. Very late, they dropped off to sleep in their chairs. Then, when James was about to go, Maggie woke them up and so more or less forced him to part with four shillings before he left. That gave her some satisfaction, for James, though rich, was mean. He always went home by the last train, just after two o’clock.

Maggie’s children secretly stared at their uncle. They could not forget that he had, in their mother’s words, “lost two wives and taken a third, ” They wondered about those two unfortunate lost ladies. They asked each other what their fate had been, and if neither could ever be found again. James never brought his third wife with him nor ever mentioned her. The children decided that he must be so frightened of losing her that he never allowed her outside the door.

  11. The underlined word “mercy” in the text most probably means _______.

  A. loss

  B. wonder

  C. lucky thing

  D. terrible thing

  12. Maggie never prepared anything special for James because _______.

  A. he was a man difficult to please

  B. she never knew when he was coming

  C. she was too busy looking after her children

  D. he never stayed long enough for a meal

  13. What do we know about James’ behavior?

  A. He was a kind man, with love for the family.

  B. He was generous, especially towards his brother.

  C. He was anxious to please the family, especially the kids.

  D. He was rude to his sister-in-law.

  14. Maggie felt pleased when _______.

  A. she paid James the money that she owed him

  B. James gave some money to the children

  C. she had to wake James up to catch his train

  D. James thanked her for the nice supper

  15. The children did not realize that two of James’ wives _______.

  A. had been dead

  B. suffered from loss of memory

  C. had run away from him

  D. might appear again one day

Bill Javis took over our village’s news-agency at a time of life when most of us only wanted to relax. He just thought he would like something but not too much to do, and the news-agency was ready-made. The business produced little enough for him, but Bill was a man who only wanted the simplicity and order and regularity of the job. He had been a long-serving sailor, and all his life had done everything by the clock.

Every day he opened his shop at 6:00 a. m. to catch the early trade; the papers arrived on his doorstep before that. Many of Bill’s customers were city workers, and the shop was convenient for the station. Business was tailing off by 10 o’clock, so at eleven sharp Bill closed for lunch. It was hard luck on anybody who wanted a paper or magazine in the afternoon, for most likely Bill would be down on the river bank, fishing, and his neatest competitor was five kilometers away. Sometimes in the afternoon-, the evening paper landed on the doorway, and at 4 o’ clock Bill reopened his shop. The evening rush lasted till seven, and it was worthwhile.

He lived in a flat above the ship, alone. Except in the very bad weather, you always knew where to find him in the afternoon, as I have said. Once, on a sunny afternoon, I walked home along the river bank from a shopping trip to the village. By my watch it was three minutes past four, so I was astonished to see Bill sitting there on his little chair with a line in the, water. He had no luck, I could, see, but he was making no effort to move.

“What’s wrong, Bill?” I called out from the path.

For answer, he put a hand in his jacket and took out a big, golden object. For a moment I had no idea what it could be, and then it suddenly went off with a noise like a fire engine. Stopping the bell, Bill held the thing up and called back, "Ten to four, you see, and this is dead right. "

I had never known anyone carrying a brass alarm clock round with him before.

  5. Bill Javis became a news-agent when ________.

  A. he need the money.

  B. he decided to take things easy

  C. he was quite an old man

  D. he gave up clock-repairing

  6. Bill opened the shop so early in the day because ________.

  A. he liked to do as much as possible before he went to work

  B. the shop had to be open when the morning papers came

  C. he was never sure of time

  D. it was then that he did a lot of business

  7. On that sunny afternoon, the writer was surprised when he saw Bill because ________.

  A. he thought it was late for Bill to be still fishing

  B. he thought Bill was ill, since he was not moving at all

  C. Bill had not caught anything, and that seemed strange

  D. Bill stayed in his flat

  8. From the information given in the passage, who or what do you think was wrong?

  A. The bell was; it must have gone off at the wrong time.

  B. Bill was; he had dropped off to sleep.

  C. The writer’s watch was fast.

  D. Bill’s clock was wrong; it was old.

  5. C 推断题。at a time of life when most of us only wanted to relax和He had been a long-serving sailor这两点说明他已上了年纪。

  6. D 推断题。第二段开头说他6点开门,报纸在这之前已送到,而且还可以catch the early trade。

  7. A 推断题。Bill通常4点会重新开店,而那天作者的表已过4点,Bill还没有离开的意思,所以他非常惊讶。

  8. C 细节题。A项中go off是爆发,产生很大声音;B项中drop off to sleep是不知不觉入睡;文章中倒数第二段最后一句话this is dead right 中dead是“非常,完全”的意思,可见,Bill的clock没错。
