阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。Many independent Chinese women like to earn their own bread, even if their husbands are already bringing home the bacon. But a recent survey suggests that such women find more joy from relationships, rather than successful careers.

About 73 percent of the 7,000 women surveyed in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou said they would choose to work even if their husbands earned enough for the family. The survey also found that 77 percent define happiness as "enjoying a relationship".

But striking a balance between career and family can bring challenges to the woman's career advancement.

"In my company, women usually have an equal or even a higher starting salary than men," said Li Hua, general manager of Beijing Chuangjiashe Book Circulation Company. "However, as they begin to climb up the career ladder, women often meet problems along the way, while men can climb the ladder more easily."

Both physical and emotional differences can prevent some women from taking tough positions, Li said. But family life is often the main difficulty for Chinese career women.

Despite these challenges, however, some experts believe it's reasonable for some women to want to be breadwinners.

"In this way, the roles of a family are decided by the parents' abilities rather than their gender(性别)," said Gu Donghui, a sociology professor at Fudan University.

Gu says women should have the freedom to decide if they want to stay at home or work to support the family. "Everyone has a different interpretation(解释)of what it means to find self-worth".

Wang Haibin, an economic expert from Renmin University shares that view: "Traditionally, we tend to regard the family as the cell unit of society. Some members have always been expected to make sacrifices for it. But, it really doesn't matter who earns more. Economic independence and personal choice is essential for both sexes in the family."

From the passage we know that ______.

  A. many husbands can’t earn enough

  B. most women want to support their families themselves

  C. women meet fewer problems than men while working

  D. many women want to make more friends while working

  52. What brings career women more joy and happiness according to the passage?

  C. Challenges

  D. Successful careers

  53. What's the main problem that career women meet while working?

  A. Family life

  B. Tough positions

  C. Physical difference

  D. The career ladder

Some women want to be breadwinners probably because ______.

  A. their families are poor

  B. they have a lot of children

  C. they want to show their self-worth

  D. their husbands do not work

  55. Who should make sacrifice for the family according to the passage?

  A. The wife

  B. The husband

  C. Either of them

  D. Neither of them

"He was telling him to stop and put the gun down," student Jose Cazares told Today on Tuesday. "Then the kid, he yelled out, 'No!' Like, he was yelling at him, and he shot him. The teacher was calm, he was holding out his hand like, 'Put the gun in my hand.' "

"It's just so sad knowing he left because he protected his students," one of the posts said, followed by another that read, "The sad part is this week it's his and his wife's anniversary and his daughter graduates from the military tomorrow."

CNN reports that two students who were wounded by the shooter – who used a Ruger 9 mm semi-automatic(半自动的) handgun – are currently in stable condition in hospital.

Authorities will not be releasing the identity (身份) of the shooter out of respect for his parents, but schoolmate Amaya Newton was shocked by his actions, calling the gunman "a really nice kid," adding, "He would make you smile when you were having a bad day."

  C. one of the wounded students died later in the hospital

  D. the police didn't find out who the shooter was

  A. Because they wanted to arrest the shooter's parents.

  B. Because the police didn't know who the shooter was.

  C. Because the shooter was once a nice kid.

  D. Because the police didn’t want to affect the shooter's parents' life.

  60. What happened after the incident?

  A. The police arrived shortly after the shooting.

The Western has been the favorite type for American adventure story since the nineteenth century. While the American West was being settled, newspapers and "dime novels" could depend on stories of the frontier settlements and tell tales about living in the untamed wilderness to sell. The public back East was eager to read about the West, even if the stories were more fiction than fact.

In 1902, Owen Wister published his novel The Virginian, which was one of the first novels to treat the Western as a serious literary form; the novel still sold well and had inspired several movies and a television series. In 1905, Bertha H. Bower and Zane Grey published their first novels, and the popular Western novels had continued to flourish from that day on, with current novels by Luke Short, Max Brand, and Louis L’ Amour carrying on the tradition.

The first Western movie appeared even earlier than these serious Western novels. Before the turn of the century, an associate of Edison’s had filmed Cripple Creek Barroom Scene, a few seconds of film showing the inside of a saloon, to help publicize the invention of the movie camera. In 1903 the Edison’ company filmed the first "full-length" Western — The Great Train Robbery. The film lasts less than fifteen minutes, but a story is told its entirety. In the movie, bandits (强盗) rob a train and its passengers, killing the engineer, and find themselves tracked down by a posse. Audiences loved the movie. Some theaters were actually opened for the single purpose of showing The Great Train Robbery and only later realized that they could do equally well showing other movies. The film was so successful that other companies, and finally even the Edison company itself, began producing copies and other versions of The Great Train Robbery. Ironically, in" an era when the West was still very real —-Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma were all territories rather than states in 1903 — The Great Train Robbery was filmed in New Jersey.

  9. The purpose of this passage is to________.

  A. discuss the making of the movie The Great Train Robbery

  B. discuss the early Western novels

  C. discuss the art of movie making

  D. trace the development of the Western as an American adventure story tradition

  10. We can conclude from this passage that________.

  A. people lost interest in the West after 1903

  B. Owen Wister was an ex-cowboy

  C. New Jersey was still "untamed wilderness" in 1903

  D. films were fairly uncommon at the time The Great Train Robbery was made

  11. The passage suggests that________.

  A. Edison’s invention of the movie camera happened;by accident

  B. movie houses didn’t make much-money in the early days

  C. Easterners were fascinated by the " wild West"

  D. The Great Train Robbery was poorly received by the public because it lacked a plot

  12. As used in this passage, the word “literary” means________.

  A. humorous

  B. financial

  C. appropriate to literature

  D. amateur

  11. C 推断题。第一段最后一句的was eager to read about the West(渴望看一些有关西部的书),与题中were fascinated by the wild West (对荒芜的西部着了迷)表达了同样的信息,故C项为正确答案。

  12. C 词义题。根据上下文关系以及关键词语novels和form可推知literary的词义。因为“小说”与“形式”应属于“文学”范围。

What does it mean to say that we live in a world of persuasion? It means that we live among competing interests. Your roommate’s need to study for an exam may take priority (优先) over pizza. Your instructor may have good reasons not to change your grade. And the object of your romantic/interest may have other choices.

In such a world, persuasion is the art of getting others to give fair and favorable consideration to our points of view. When we persuade, we want to influence how others believe and behave. We may not always prevail — other points of view may be more persuasive, depending on the listener, the situation, and the merit of the case. But when we practice the art of persuasion, we try to ensure that our position receives the attention it deserves.

Some people, however, object to the very idea of persuasion. They may regard it as an unwelcome interruption into their lives. Just the opposite, we believe that persuasion is unavoidable — to live is to persuade. Persuasion may be ethical (合乎道义的) or unethical, selfless or selfish, inspiring or degrading. Persuaders may enlighten our mind or prey on our vulnerability. Ethical persuasion, however, calls on sound reasoning and is sensitive to the feelings and needs of listeners. Such persuasion can help us apply the wisdom of the past to the decisions we now must make. Therefore, the most basic part of education is learning to resist the one kind of persuasion and to encourage and practice the other.

Beyond its personal importance to us, persuasion is necessary to society. The right to persuade and be persuaded is the bedrock of the American political system, guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution (美国宪法).

  10. According to the passage, persuasion means ________.

  A. changing others’ points of view

  B. exercising power over other people

  C. getting other people to consider your point of view

  D. getting people to agree with you and do what you want

  11. The underlined word in the second paragraph “prevail” means________.

  A. win

  B. fail

  C. speak

  D. listen

  12. The passage states that some people object to persuasion because they think it is ________.

  A. a danger to society

  B. difficult to do well

  C. unwelcome behavior

  D. never successful

  13. The passage mainly discusses ________.

  A. how people persuade

  B. why people persuade

  C. that persuasion is both good and bad

  D. that persuasion is important and it is all around us

  【答案与解析】

  10. C 细节题。将第二段中persuasion is the art of getting others to give fair and favorable consideration to our points of view与各选项进行比较可知。

  11. A 词义题。由破折号后面的句子other points of view may be more persuasive可知,我们不一定占上风,故选A。

  12. C 细节题。由第三段中第一二句Some people…into their lives可知。

  13. D 主旨题。根据第一段对we live in a world of persuasion的理解,第三段中we believe that persuasion is unavoidable-to live is to persuade 及最后一段中persuasion is necessary to society与各选项进行比较可确定选D。

A 33-year-old financial analyst in California recently quit his job to devote himself to an unpaid job teaching math on the Internet, and his lessons are reaching almost 100,000 people a month. Salman Khan’s voice is heard every day on the net --- by tens of thousands of students around the world who are hungry for help learning math. He has posted 1,200 lessons on YouTube ... lessons that appear on an electronic blackboard, which range from basic addition to advanced mathematics for science and finance. And they are free.

Khan lives in Silicon Valley, with his wife, a doctor, and their new baby. He got the idea for his “Khan Academy” four years ago, when he taught a young cousin how to convert kilograms to grams. With Khan’s help, the cousin got good at math, and Khan began a new career.

Now, Khan records his lessons himself, but he never goes on camera. “It feels like my voice in their head. You’re looking at it and it feels like someone’s over your shoulder talking in your ear, as opposed to someone at the blackboard, which is distant from you,” he said.

When Springfield High School in Palo Alto, California invited Khan to speak in person --- he immediately connected to the students there.

The idea of short lessons that can be played over and over again attracted high school senior Bridget Meaney. She says she had trouble with math in the seventh grade. “I think the teachers are good, but they can’t teach at a speed that’s perfect for everyone,” she said. “I like the idea of learning something in class but then going back and pressing pause or rewind and actually getting a deeper understanding of it.”

Originally, Khan kept his lessons short because of YouTube restrictions. Now, he thinks short is better. “Education researchers now tell me that 10 minutes is how long someone can have a high level of concentration. And anything beyond that and your brain switches off,” he said.

For Khan, teaching math, science, and finance is just the beginning. He says he’s ready to expand his YouTube site to include other subjects as well.

  6. What gave Khan the idea of teaching math online?

  A. His success in helping his cousin learn math.

  B. His discovery that many students found learning math difficult.

  C. A suggestion made to him at a local high school.

  D. His interest in Internet teaching.

  7. Why does Khan never go on camera?

  A. He’s too shy to show his face on camera.

  B. It’s restricted by YouTube for education videos.

  C. He wants to keep distance from the viewers.

  D. He wants to create a more relaxed learning atmosphere.

  8. From the passage, we know that ________.

  A. Khan travels to many schools to promote his lessons

  B. Khan plans to include more subjects in the future

  C. Khan gives live math lessons every day for free

  D. Khan set up the Khan Academy with his wife

  9. Why does Bridget Meaney like Khan’s lessons?

  A. Khan teaches seventh grade math better than her teacher.

  B. The lessons can be watched repeatedly until fully understood.

  C. She can perfectly follow the pace of Khan’s teaching.

  D. She cannot concentrate when learning in class.

  10. What does Khan mean by “short is better” in the 6th paragraph?

  A. Keeping the lessons short can ensure better concentration.

  B. YouTube recommends short lessons for its site.

  C. Short lessons encourage students to return to the website.

  D. Students enjoy short mathematics lessons more.
