  Ⅳ. 阅读理解

You’re rushing to work and a man ahead of you collapses on the sidewalk. Do you stop to help? In a study of by-standers, it was found that some people avert their gaze and keep on walking rather than stop and get involved.

“There is a tendency to decide that no action is needed. ” says a psychologist. “The first thoughts that pop into your mind often keep you from offering help. In order to take action, you have to work against them. ” Here are some common thoughts that might prevent you from helping.

  ● Why should I be the one? I’m probably not the most competent (有能力的) person in this crowd. You might think someone older or with more medical knowledge should offer assistance.

  ● What if he doesn’t really need my help? The fear of embarrassment is powerful; no one wants to risk looking foolish in front of others.

  ● No one else looks concerned—this must not be a problem. We can follow the people around us, but most people tend to hold back their emotions in public. “If you spot trouble and find yourself explaining inaction, force yourself to stop and evaluate the situation instead of walking on, ” says the psychologist. “Then retry to involve other people; you don’t have to take on the entire responsibility of being helpful. Sometimes it’s just a matter of turning to the person next to you and saying, it looks like we should do something. Or asking someone if an ambulance has been called and, if not, to call for one. Once you take action, most people will follow you.”

  1. According to a study of by-standers, what will some people do when a man ahead falls down on the sidewalk?

  A. They will call for help and then walk away.

  B. They will stop and offer help.

  C. They will turn away their eyes and go on walking.

  D. They will laugh at him.

  2. We learn from the last paragraph that if we spot trouble, _______ .

  A. we should call the ambulance as soon as we can

  B. we should take on the whole responsibility and do something alone

  C. we should stop and evaluate the situation and try to make other people follow

  D. we should turn to other people and ask them to take on the responsibility

  3. In order to offer others your timely help, you need to ________ .

  A. ask others for help and call the police

  B. get along well with the passers-by who spot the trouble

  C. go directly to the police station

  D. work against the first thoughts that prevent you from offering help

  4. The main purpose of the text is to tell readers _______ .

  A. to give others a hand

  B. to be more competent

  C. not to risk looking foolish

  D. to stop and evaluate the situation

  Ⅴ. 任务型读写

  阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填入恰当的单词。

  注意:每个空格只填一个单词。

Some people believe that greed and selfishness have become the basis of modern society, and we should return to the old traditions of family and community then we will have a better life. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above opinion?

In this fast-paced world, many values are undergoing major changes. While traditional people consider caring, sharing and generosity originally in life and work, modern people seem to be more self-absorbed or self-concerned.

Modern people act selfishly to survive the harsh competition of life. They say that it is a jungle out there. To survive, you have to fight with whatever means that come in handy. Obviously greed and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of colleagues. We are in any way advocating any selfish conduct. It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences.

In spite of common practice, it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were more condemned then. But we can not ignore the fact that people in the past lived a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with their modern counterparts.

Are we happier to share with others or be generous to them? There is no fixed answer, either. Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing the opposite. But I personally think that people should not be too selfish. Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial relationship.

In conclusion, modern people appear to be more self-centered than those in the past due to strong outside pressure. However, we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and to build a mutually beneficial relationship with others.
