  第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

  A

People in the nation of Haiti are struggling to recover after a powerful earthquake caused massive destruction there.

Tens of thousands of people in the Caribbean nation were

killed, and many more were injured. The Presidential Palace, which is like the White House in the US,was among the many government buildings that collapsed.Hospitals were destroyed,as were countless homes. The disaster added more suffering to

people already struggling to cope with everyday life.Haiti is one of the poorest nations in the world.

International aid groups are rushing to provide food, water, and medical aid to Haiti.People worldwide are donating money to help. Many nations, including the US,are sending aid as well as money. The US is sending troops to help with rescue and relief efforts, and to police the streets.“This is a time when we are reminded of the common humanity that we all share,” said US President Barack Obama.

The earthquake’s epicenter—the point on the Earth’s surface directly above where it happened—was about 10 miles from Haiti’s capital,PortauPrince.Experts say it was the worst earthquake in the region in more than 200 years. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale, which is very high.More than 30 aftershocks,or smaller earthquakes, came after the big quake.

Some Americans have a special concern about the situation in Haiti—family and friends.Hundreds of thousands of people in the US are from Haiti. They are anxiously seeking news of loved ones. And like other Americans, they are working to help Haiti recover from this disaster.

The earthquake in Haiti occurred on a long fault,or crack in the Earth’s surface, which goes across the island. This underground crack separates two giant tectonic (地壳构造上的) plates,or slabs ( 石板) of rock that make up the Earth’s outer layer.Along the fault, the plates slowly rub past one another in opposite directions. But this movement isn’t smooth. The plates’edges get stuck for long periods of time.Eventually, they may suddenly jerk free. That sudden movement is what results in an earthquake.

We can almost always find an opportunity for kindness.I filled my afternoon with small acts of kindness today and

they didn’t take much time or effort, but I hope they made

a small difference to the people who received them.

This afternoon I went out shopping. My first stop was the supermarket.I wanted to buy some bread with chocolate for my little daughter Rita. After I got the bread,I went on to my second stop—a local charity (慈善) bookshop.I wanted

to see if I could buy some books on unicorns for Rita.

While I was there,I started a conversation with the shop assistant, during which she commented on the smell of my bread.I jokingly replied she could either avoid it (if she was on a diet) or go to the supermarket and get some. She replied she would prefer the second.“Even better.I will give you mine,” I said.I gave my bread to her and walked straight

  out.She seemed a little surprised.

When I came out,it was raining hard.Everyone looked

quite soaked. They must have been running in the rain.I noticed a homeless lady selling the Big Issue (a magazine

that supports homeless people) and she looked especially cold,so I gave her all my money to buy her magazines.

I then went back to my car.I had to pay for two hours of parking instead of one because I didn’t have the correct change,so I still had an hour left on my parking.I waited until I saw a young couple drive in.I gave them one magazine and they were a little surprised and quite pleased.

Long ago, poems were recited out loud instead of being written down. When the Greeks first started the Olympics, they held poetry contests as well as athletic competitions.

Now,poetry competitions have been revived (恢复).This year 120,000 high school students competed in the first Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest, performing poems from memory for $100,000 in prizes.

The first competitions were held in classrooms. The winners went on to schoolwide contests, and then they competed in city and state competitions. Finally, the 50 state champions, along with the District of Columbia champion came to Washington,D.C.last week for the last showdown. After the 51 champions competed against one another,12 went on to the finals. Then the field was narrowed to five. The final five had one last chance to “perform” a poem. The overall champ,Jackson Hille,a high school senior from Ohio, won a $20,000 scholarship.

The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation started Poetry Out Loud because they realized that hearing a poem performed is a different experience from reading it on a page.

It’s not just a matter of saying the words in the right order. It’s the tone of voice, the pauses, the gestures, and the attitude of the person performing that bring the words to life.“Each time we hear somebody recite a poem,we find something fresh and interesting about it,” says National Public Radio Broadcaster Scott Simon, master of ceremonies for the finals.Hearing it in a new voice offers something new to the listener.

Not only do the people hearing poems have a new experience, memorizing and presenting poems helps the participants (选手) understand those poems in a new way.Another benefit of a competition such as Poetry Out Loud is that the participants learn publicspeaking skills that can help them for life.

66.From the first paragraph,we can know________.

A.the Greeks were the first to write poems

B.the Olympics used to start with poem reciting

C.poems were spread orally in the past

68.According to the passage, hearing a poem recited by different people can________.

  B.help listeners find their interest

  C.make listeners learn the words

  D.offer something new to listeners

69.One benefit the participants get from poem recitation competitions is that they can________.

A.become skilled in speaking in public

  B.write good poems themselves

  C.change their attitudes towards life

D.make friends with many great poets

70.What’s the main idea of the passage?

  A.Reciting poems improves your memory.

  C.Poets have a great time.

  D.Poetry competitions freshen us up.

There are many times I feel close to going crazy in Beijing. The overhooting horns and the dangerous driving of local drivers are slowly driving us cyclists to extinction, here in the bicycle capital of the world.

What keeps me conscious is my weekly session with some of Beijing’s warmest souls. We meet at the English corner in the Chaoyang Library. There, all topics are open for discussion. We usually talk about family and business, two Chinese priorities across all age groups,I’ve discovered. There are always plenty of requests to explain European religion and culture. Some, however, like

  one

  of my

  older

students,80yearold Mr Gou,prefer to sing in English.

Lately we’ve talked about the 60th anniversary celebrations and I’m lucky in the diversity of ages that I get a good sample of what China’s thinking. Most look forward to the time off, some have been inconvenienced (by their offices being shut to make way for rehearsals) and some worry about the cost of it.

I sometimes feel that even a 60yearold China is still not very well known or understood.Foreign friends with little time to spare on business and tourist visits to Beijing complain about the similar things:aggressive driving, bad air and a lot of ostentatious displays of wealth such as big cars, paunches and loud shirts.

It’s a shame, because those are the conspicuous minority. To know Beijing you have to make an effort to meet and talk to the majority—the likes of retired Doctor Rose, who runs the English corner,or Mr Tang, the retired railway station inspector. These are friendly, knowable folks with all the patience possible to explain and share China with a curious foreigner.I feel very lucky to have them to talk and listen to.

They’ll likely never—or rarely—step into a Starbucks.Their means are modest and they don’t have any flashy cars to park on the footpath. No,but they’ll teach you priceless, disappearing Beijing knowledge and crafts. They’ll invite you to

eat jiaozi and play shuttlecock. And on October 1,I marked the big 60th birthday with them, the ordinary, kind people of Beijing.

71.Who runs the English corner according to the passage?

  A.Tang.

  B.Rose.

  C.Mr Gou.

  D.The writer.

72.Which of the following is TRUE of Beijing?

A.The drivers in Beijing drive terribly.

B.People at the English corner talk about European religion and culture every day.

C.Foreign friends spare no time on business in Beijing.

D.Only when you talk to people can you know Beijing better.

73.What can we learn about the 60th anniversary celebrations?

A.The writer can predict what China’s thinking.

B.Most people think the 60th anniversary celebrations worthless.

C.Some people may be concerned about sideeffects of the 60th anniversary celebrations.

D.People will teach you priceless, disappearing Beijing knowledge and crafts.

74.The underlined word “ostentatious” in Paragraph 4 means________.

  A.jealous

  B.expensive

  C.cheap

  D.showy

75.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

One day, your child will need to earn a living.Kids can get an edge on the work world by starting early and in doing so they will gain valuable experience working with different people. Also they can learn about managing money—have some money to spend once they get older,or save for college.

But first ask yourself,is your child ready to work?Do they have the time, and won’t it interfere with their school work?If they are ready, then here are some jobs for kids to make money.

  HOUSE CLEANING

Instead of a parents helper, your child could simply do house cleaning. There are many chores that would be suitable such as vacuuming, dusting.
