  Radioactivity is dangerous.

It may cause skin burns, it may destory good tissues(组织) and it may cause illness that could be passed on to our children and grandchildren. In case of exposure (暴露) it may even cause death.

In the early days of radioactivity, scientists did not realize these dangers. Marie and Pierre Curie, after having worked for a while with radioactive materials, noticed that their fingers were reddened and swollen(红肿) and the skin was peeling off. Henry Becquerel carried a small tube with radium in it in his waistcoat pocket, and was surprised to find a bum on his chest. Other early workers also reported burns and harm of dif- ferent kinds.

The strange fact is that it can harm without musing pain, which is the waming signal we expect from harmfulness. Pain makes up pull back our hands from a fire or a hot object, but a person carrying radioactive materials had no way of telling whether he is touching something too "hot"for .safety. Besides, the "burns"or other harm- fulness that radioactivity produces may not appear for wceks. A person may have been hurt without knowing it for .some time.

  He's an old cobbler

  (修鞋匠)

with a shop in the Marais, a historic area in Paris. When I took him my shoes, he at first told me: “I haven't time. Take them to the other fellow on the main street ; he'll fix them for you right away.”

But I'd had my eye on his shop for a long time. Just looking at his bench loaded with tools and pieces of leather, I knew he was a skilled craftsman

  (手艺人).

“No,” I replied, “the other fellow can't do it well.”

“The other fellow” was one of those shopkeepers who fix shoes and make keys “while-U-wait” -- without knowing much about mending shoes or making keys. They work carelessly, and when they have finished sewing back a sandal strap (鞋带) you might as well just throw away the pair.

My man saw I wouldn't give in, and he smiled. He wiped his hands on his blue apron ( 围裙), looked at my shoes, had me write my name on one shoe with a piece of chalk and said, “Come back in a week.”

I was about to leave when he took a pair of soft leather boots off a shelf.

“See what I can do?” he said with pride.

“Only three of us in Paris can do this kind of work.. ”

When I got back out into the street, the world seemed brand-new to me. He was something out of an ancient legend, this old craftsman with his way of speaking familiarly, his very strange, dusty felt hat, his funny accent from who-knows-where and, above all, his pride in his craft.

These are times when nothing is important but the bottom line, when you can do things any old way as long as it “pays”, when, in short, people look on work as a path to ever-increasing consumption

(消费) rather than a way to realize their own abilities. In such a period it is a rare comfort to find a cobbler who gets his greatest satisfaction from pride in a job well done.

  41. Which of the following is true about the old cobbler.'?

  A. He was equipped with the best repairing tools.

  B. He was the only cobbler in the Marais.

  C. He was a native Parisian.

  D. He was proud of his skills.

  42. The sentence “He was something out of an ancient legend.” implies that

  A. the man was very strange

  B. it was difficult to communicate with this man

  C. nowadays you can hardly find anyone like him

  D. the man was too old

  43. According to the author, many people work just to

  .

  A. realize their abilities

  B. make money

  C. gain happiness

  D. gain respect

  44. This story wants to tell us that

  D. people are born equal

Handing your children three strawberries each, you add, “The doctor said you need these for space travel.” Thanks to medical advices, vaccination shots are a thing of the past. Ordinary foods contain specific vaccines. With the berries in their mouths, the kids head for the front door.

It’s time for you to go to work. Your car checks your fingerprints and unlocks the doors. “My office. Autopilot,” you command. Your car drives itself down the road and moves smoothly into traffic on the highway. You sit back and unroll your e-newspaper. The latest news downloads and fills the viewer. When a storm is coming, most people leave the area as quickly as possible and head for safety. But there are a few people who will get into their cars and go straight for the center of the storm. These people are willing to risk(冒…危险)being killed by floods or 100-kilometer-an-hour winds for the excitement of watching the storm close up.

“Storm chasing(追逐)” is becoming an increasingly popular hobby(喜好), especially in the Midwest of the United States, where there are frequent storms between March and July. A storm chaser begins the day by checking the Internet for the latest weather reports, and then drives up to 1,000 kilometers to where the storm will be and waits for it to develop.

Although anyone can do it , storm chasing is extremely dangerous. The power of a big storm can throw a cow into the air or destroy a whole house in seconds. Storm chasers are also often hurt in accidents caused by driving in a heavy rain. If you are a beginner, it is much safer to join a group for storm-chasing vacations during the storm season.

Even then, storm chasing is not all adventure and excitement . “Storm chasing is 95% driving,” says Daniel Lynch, who spends most of his summer storm-chasing. “Sometimes you can sit around for hours waiting for something to happen, and all you get is blue sky and a few light showers.”

However, for storm chasers, it is all worth it. “When you get close to a storm, it is the most exciting sight you will ever see in your life,” says Jasper Morley. “Every storm is an example of the power of nature, It is the greatest show on Earth.”

  57. For storm chasing, the first thing storm chasers do is to

  .

head straight for the center of the storm

get into the car for safety

wait patiently for the storm to develop

collect information about a coming storm

  58. Beginners of storm chasing are advised

  .

not to drive in a heavy rain

to do it in an organized way

not to get too close to a storm

to spend more time on it in summer

  59. By saying “it is all worth it” in the last paragraph, the author means that

  .

storm chasing costs a lot of money

storm chasing is worth hours of waiting

efforts in storm chasing are well paid

a storm presents the greatest show on Earth

  60. What can we learn from the text?

Sometimes storm chasers get nothing but disappointment

Many storm chasers get killed in the storms.

Storm chasing is becoming popular around the world

Storm chasing is only fit for young people.
