Papa’s jaw dropped when Mama told him that Sister

had cheated on her final exams-not to succeed but to fail.“It’s unbelievable!”he said.“Sister has always been so proud of her good grades!”

“Yes,she has,”said Mama.“But it’s not unbelievable. It just shows how badly she wanted off the swimming team.”

“Wanted off the swimming team?”said Papa.“She never said anything about that to me.”

“Of course she didn’t,”said Mama.“She was afraid you’d blow your top.You already had her getting a swimming scholarship to college and winning gold medals at the Olympics. Can you imagine how much pressure she must have felt? For her ,being on the team couldn’t have been much fun.”

“Oh,my gosh!”Papa said, clapping a hand to his forehead.“I’ve been so stupid!I just thought she’d want to be a champion swimmer because she’s so good at it.”“It’s like anything else, dear,”said Mama.“No matter how good at it you are ,if it stops being fun,you won’t want to do it any more.”

Papa put his head in his hands.

“She must be really mad at me,”he mumbled.“Maybe I should say sorry to her.”

Sister’s footsteps could be heard on the stairs. She came into the kitchen and looked hopefully up at her parents.

“Honey,”said Mama with a smile,“your Papa and I have decided that there’s no reason for you to be on the swimming team if you don’t want to.”

Sister’s face lit up like a Christmas tree.“Yippee!”She cried.

“And,”added Papa,“there’s no need for any more drills.I’m sure you’ll bring your grades back up all by yourself.”

Sister ran to Papa and jumped into his arms. She gave him a big hug.“I’m going to go and play cards with Lizzy!”she said.“See you later!”

From the kitchen window,Mama and Papa watched their daughter run down the sunny road toward Lizzy’s house.

“It’s good to see her happy again,”said Mama.

“It sure is,”Papa agreed.“As for the swimming team, there’s always next year.”

  “If?”Mama prompted him.

  “Oh,right,”said Papa.“If she wants to.”

  Mama smiled.“At least you’re learning,dear,”she said.She kissed him.

“Well, you know what they say,”Papa said.“Better late than never.”

  ★★★★★Exactly As Described Feb.15,2010

Product arrived quickly. The description said there was a tear on the cover of the book.I was pleased that it was just a small tear and otherwise the book was in very good condition. This seller was honest and did not try to overplay the condition in order to make a sale.

  ★★★★Some good information Feb.06,2010

This book does have some good information, but it does not talk at all about eating organic food, grass fed beef, freerange eggs,etc..The poisonous pesticides(杀虫剂)and artificial hormones(激素) in our society have a huge effect on our health and some illnesses probably wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for them.

  ★★★★★Fantastic Aug.05,2009

This book is perfect for any questions you have about using food to help your body.We all know chicken soup helps colds, but did you know? This book will tell you exactly what’s special about each food and what part of the body or disease it helps.Combat any health problems you have with this common sense food guide.

American life before 1950 felt nothing like American life feels now,and a big reason is those three changes that took place in the second half of the 20th century, which has had the most lasting impact on our lives today.

  1.The building of the interstates(州际公路).

2.The covering of the United States with coasttocoast television.

3.The introduction and spread of the Internet.

Before the interstates were constructed, even a trip within an individual state often took considerable planning;twolane roads, dangerous and slow, were common. The interstates tore down the invisible walls around US towns.President Eisenhower was in favor of building the interstates, because he believed that,in a time of war, they would be helpful in moving troops and supplies. But their immediate effect was to make Americans feel that certain doors had been unlocked. With the interstates came a sense of freedom:A person could drive anywhere—everywhere—easily.Suddenly, horizons were unlimited.“Local”didn’t mean quite the same thing it used to.Getting away was effortless.

The introduction of national television meant that for the first time in history, people in every corner of the country were watching exactly the same thing at exactly the same moment. It connected the country,in a way that even network radio hadn’t accomplished, and it was because of the quality of the TV pictures. As with the interstates, coasttocoast television was a cure to separation. Those who ran the newly formed television networks had an enormous amount of power.Their decisions about what to put on the air determined what people would be talking about the next day. They controlled what people would laugh at and when, what people would cry over and when, what would anger people and when it would anger them.

And then, later in the century, the Internet came along, erasing all symbolic borders. If the interstate highways had allowed physical freedom, the Internet allowed a different kind of freedom, one unprecedented(空前的)in human experience. It was no coincidence that it was initially referred to as the information superhighway:Seemingly overnight, the knowledge of the world was available to anyone with a keyboard and a modem;people who had never met and would never meet could communicate as if they were lifelong friends. Now the individual at his or her computer terminal was given the power to decide how he or she would be informed of entertained at a given moment. No one else had the absolute authority to arrange the individual’s life;he or she made that decision, moment by moment. What in the past might have taken a person a lifetimesearching for mankind’s recorded wisdom in distant and magnificent libraries-now,in theory, was available with a series of key taps from one’s room. What had once seemed unbelievable had, very quickly, become routine.

The three developments ended up changing our daily world greatly;largely because of them,it is a world that would be almost unrecognizable to our grandparents and greatgrandparents.

  .阅读理解

  A

The Internet has come a long way in the last couple of decades, and we’re seeing some noticeable generational trends. For instance, one of my friend’s aunts “friended me” on Facebook(社交网站),and I noticed that she had three times the number of Facebook friends as her nephew, despite the fact that she has only recently started to spend more time on the Internet. She spends more time on Facebook than he does.Yet he is part of the younger generation that grew up using the Internet.

The beauty of Facebook is in the packaging of the service.Almost every facet of Facebook is technology that existed from years before: e-mail,instant messaging, photo galleries, personal Web pages,RSS,etc..Facebook has taken these function, which young people have been able to do for the past decade, and made them more user-friendly,more accessible—for young and older generations alike.

Facebook is the second act in the people’s Internet Revolution;the first being America Online, which spurred the adoption of the Internet in the homes of ordinary Americans. In a similar fashion,Facebook is spurring the adoption of Internet use in demographics that have been dismissed as the non-Internet users. It gives people a reason to be online in a way that simply checking e-mail,the 1996 equivalent, did not.Facebook is active in a way that the general population may find more rewarding.

The ability to communicate (or not communicate) with your friends in different ways also heightens the‘stickiness’of the service. For example,it tells you who else is using Facebook right now.You can then exchange instant messages with any of them. There’s always one more thing to check, see,or do on Facebook. It’s like a never-ending dinner party and all your friends and family are invited.

  1.Compared with the aunt,the nephew________.

A.had 3 times the number of friends

B.has spent more time on the Internet all the time

  C.spends less time on Facebook

D.had the access to the Internet only when he grew up

2.The underlined word in the second paragraph refer to________.

  A.young people

  B.old people

  C.these functions

  D.young and old people

3.Which is TRUE according to the third paragraph?

A.Facebook accelerated the adoption of the Internet in the ordinary families.

B.America Online was the first act in the Internet Revolution.

C.Facebook has spurred the application of the Internet use in demographics.

D.America Online spurred the ordinary use in all of the world families.

  4.Using Facebook,you can________.

A.communicate with whoever is using the Facebook right now

  B.do one thing every time

C.have dinner together with your friends and families

D.tell you anyone who is not using the Facebook

5.What is the main idea of the passage?

A.The drawbacks and the strengths of the Facebook.

B.Facebook makes the communication more convenient for the old and the young.

  C.People’s Internet Revolution:Facebook.

  D.Facebook and America Online.

Born in California in 1913,Nixon had a brilliant record at Whittier College and Duke University Law School before beginning the practice of law.In 1940,he married Patricia Ryan;they had two daughters:Tricia and Julie.During World War Ⅱ,Nixon served as a Navy commander in the Pacific.

On leaving the service,he was elected to Congress from his California district. In 1950,he won a Senate seat. Two years later,General Eisenhower selected Nixon, aged 39,to be his running mate.

As Vice President,Nixon took on major duties in the Eisenhower Administration.Nominated (提名)for President by loud approval in 1960,he lost by a narrow margin to John F.Kennedy.In 1968,he again won his party’s nomination, and went on to defeat Vice President Hubert H.Humphrey and thirdparty candidate George C.Wallace.

His achievements while in office included income sharing, new anticrime laws and a broad environmental program. One of the most dramatic events of his first term occurred in 1969,when American astronauts made the first moon landing.

Some of his most publicly praised achievements came in his search for world stability.During visits in 1972 to Beijing and Moscow,he reduced tensions with China and the USSR.

In his 1972 bid for office,Nixon defeated Democratic candidate George McGovern by one of the widest margins on record.

Within a few months, his administration was involved in the socalled“Watergate”scandal, arising from a breakin at the offices of the Democratic National Committee during the 1972 campaign. The breakin was traced to officials of the Committee to reelect the President.A number of administration officials had to leave office;some were later found guilty of offenses connected with efforts to cover up the affair.Nixon denied any personal involvement, but the courts forced him to hand in tape recordings which indicated that he had,in fact, tried to avoid the investigation.

Faced with what seemed almost certain impeachment(弹劾),Nixon announced on August 8,1974,that he would resign the next day to begin“that process of mending which is so desperately needed in America.”

In his last years,Nixon gained praise as an elder statesman,by the time of his death on April 22,1994,he had written numerous books on his experiences in public life and on foreign policy.

At 10 o’clock,I met Holmes outside his house as arranged. With him were two men.The police officer,Peter Jones,I already knew.He had often helped us out in our little adventures. The other gentleman was Mr.Merryweather.He was the manager of the bank we had seen that morning in Short Street.

When we got to the bank,Mr.Merryweather opened the door with a large key and we all crept silently down into the basement. The floor of the basement was covered in large square stones and the room was filled with wooden boxes.

“That’s our French gold.”explained Mr.Merryweather.“We borrowed it some months ago from a French bank to use in a business deal.As it happens,we didn’t need it after all,so it was never unpacked. It will be going back to France on Monday morning.”

“Please be quiet,”said Sherlock Holmes.“Hide behind the boxes and keep very still.We_shouldn’t_have_long_to_wait.”

In fact,we waited silently in the dark for over an hour, although it seemed a lot longer to me.Then suddenly,a strange light appeared under the stone floor. One of the stones began to move, letting more light in from below.Within moments, the stone was pushed on top of the next one, leaving a lightfilled hole in its place.A hand appeared out of the hole, then another hand.A few seconds later,Vincent Spaulding jumped out of the hole onto the basement floor. Then he turned and leaned over the hole.

“OK,Archie,it’s all clear up here.Give me the hammer and the bags and then climb up yourself,”he said.At that moment,Holmes ran from behind his box and caught hold of Spaulding.

“Quick,Archie, run!”yelled Spaulding. We heard the sound of feet running away.

“He won’t get far,Mr.Clay, for that’s your real name, isn’t it?” said Holmes.“The police are guarding the shop door at the other end of the tunnel you so cleverly dug. They’ll catch him as he comes out the other end.”

Once both thieves had been arrested and taken off to the police station,Holmes and I

went home to discuss the matter.

“And so you see,Watson,Spaulding,or Clay as his real name is,needed to get Mr.Merryweather out of his shop so he and his associate could dig their tunnel. The dirt on the knees of his trousers confirmed that they were digging. When I knocked my stick on the pavement and heard nothing unusual,I knew they weren’t digging under the front of the shop.So I concluded they were digging out the back. When I made enquiries at the bank and found out about the French gold,I knew I was right. And I guessed they’d take the gold on Saturday evening because the bank would be closed the next day and they’d have time to escape before the theft was noticed.”

One of the widely recognized aspects of China’s modernization process in recent years has been the fast development of the highway system.Twenty years ago, there was virtually no highway in China. Now China has 65,000 kilometers of highway and will exceed (超越)that of the US in two or three years.

But I have a lovehate relationship with China’s highway system after taking to the road many times. To drivers,China’s highway system is probably the world’s most expensive with“here toll, there toll, everywhere toll”.

For example, transporting a large container from Guangdong Province to the BeijingTianjin area involves paying toll fees of somewhere between 4,000 to 6,000 yuan($600~900),depending on its weight. This actually makes transporting the same container from Chicago to BeijngTianjin area via sea shipment even cheaper. When moving things around the country is more expensive than moving things halfway around the globe, you know there got to be something wrong.

One doesn’t have to drive on highways for long to notice that the system is obviously inefficient. Many highways in China don’t see much traffic during the day.

While Chinese can feel proud that our country is the king of the highways,it is quite another feeling to consider that the steel, concrete and labor that go into highway construction will have to be eventually paid by the vehicles that go through, and there just aren’t enough of them. That means a high toll rate is inevitable.

Now I understand highways are expensive to build and the investment has to be recouped(收回)via toll collection.OK,you pay for what you get.But how much of the collected toll income goes toward paying back highway construction loans is very much in doubt.Has the whole thing become a scheme for meaningless job creation?

In China, collecting toll fees is a very wellpaid job,and in some cases pays better than a full professorship.I assume receiving cash and handing out a ticket doesn’t need much education, right? It certainly can’t be more stressful.

And then there are those obvious wastes at the toll booths(收费亭).China now has the world’s most beautiful and most expensive toll booths.Every time I drive by a toll booth and see a nice office building nearby for the socalled management staff,I can’t help thinking of the AC/DC song“Highway to Hell!”

According to traffic law, when the line of waiting traffic is over 200 meters long and when all lanes at the toll booth are not fully open, drivers have the right to pass free. However,I have certainly run into traffic jams caused by toll booth delays many times, and I have never enjoyed such a free ride.

A.China will have the longest highway in the world in two or three years.

B.Moving things within China will cost more than moving things around the globe.

C.Much of the toll income does not go toward paying back highway construction.

D.When the line of waiting traffic is over 200 meters long,he has the right to pass free.

7.What does the writer mainly want to express in this article?

A.China has built too much more highways than actually are needed.

Going soy is the way to go green

In 1829,US farmers grew soybeans(大豆)for the first time.In the late 1800s,lots of farmers began to grow soybeans as food for cattle.

In 1904,at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama,George Washington Carver began studying the soybean. His discoveries changed the way people thought about the soybean. No longer was it just a crop for cattle; it provided valuable protein and oil.Now soybean oil is the most popular source for an alternative fuel.

Fueling diesel(柴油)engines with vegetable oil started with the inventor Rudolf Diesel. When Diesel showed his engine at the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris,it was running only on peanut oil,a kind of biodiesel.According to the United Soybean Board, biodiesel is a fuel made from vegetable oils or animal fats.

However, over the next 100 years, diesel fuel was made largely from petroleum(石油).Interest was renewed in biodiesel in the mid1970s when the energy shortage occurred, and gas prices surged upward throughout the United States. In spite of these conditions, commercial production did not take place until much later. In 1999,The National Biodiesel Board reported that 500,000 gallons per day were produced. In 2000,production increased to 6.7 million gallons per day.

With the continual rising costs of petroleum products in the new century, major corporations and the United States government have looked to new markets.Farmers are encouraged to grow soybeans in their fields,as the demand for soybean fuel increases. They can now get several gallons of fuel per acre of soybean.

Biodiesel is created by removing a thick liquid called glycerin from soybean oil.It is registered with the US Environmental Protection Agency as a pure fuel, which is known as B100,or as a fuel additive, which is called B20,a mixture of 20 percent soy and 80 percent petroleumbased diesel.

There are many benefits of soybean fuel.

Studies have shown that biodiesel from vegetable oil reduces petroleum consumption when used in place of petroleum diesel.

In addition, the use of biodiesel reduces CO2 in the earth’s atmosphere. This is due to the fact that growing soybeans consumes nearly four times as much CO2 as the amount of CO2 produced from biodiesel waste gases.

If you ever want to take a ride in a car or bus powered by soybeans, you can.The Agriculture Research Center(ARS)National Visitor Center bus, which is used for Beltsville,Maryland farm tours,is running on biodiesel fuel.

ARS scientists are conducting biodiesel fuel research, and they are trying to find ways to make fuel from vegetable oils, animal fats, and used restaurant oils.

Biodiesel fuel costs more than regular diesel fuel. However, the price may drop if people use it more.We can look to the future with the hope that clean fuel sources will continue to be widespread in the United States and even around

  the world.

Scientists have long understood the key role that oceans play in regulating the Earth’s climate.Oceans cover 70 percent of the globe and store a thousand times more heat than the atmosphere does. What’s newer is the understanding of how this key component of our climate system responds to global warming.

A brake on global warming-for now

One of the ocean’s most important climate functions is absorbing heat and carbon dioxide(CO2),one of the gases that cause global warming.Acting as a heat sponge(海绵),the oceans have absorbed huge amounts of heat and CO2 in the last forty years.

Fujita explains that“the oceans are saving us from faster climate change-they are a big flywheel that delays rapid overheating of the earth, putting a brake on the climate system”.

“That’s the good news.”he adds.“The bad news is that the oceans only slow the atmospheric warming.Once the oceans come to balance with a greenhousegas warmed earth, the extreme heat will remain in the atmosphere and things will get much hotter.”But where and how the oceans release this accumulated(积累)heat is uncertain. And as the ocean stores heat, fragile underwater ecosystems are struggling.

The most recent scientific report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) also notes with

concern that the ocean is acidifying because of increased absorption of atmospheric CO2,and thus causing a threat for shellforming species.Sharp increases in carbon dioxide levels will cause further acidification of the ocean.

  Currents distributing heat

Another important role the oceans play is that of distributor.Oceans deliver heat and lifesustaining nutrients around the globe.Just as blood vessels bring oxygen and nutrients to cells in the human body, the ocean’s currents carry oxygen, nutrients and heat throughout the Earth. The ocean distributes 25 to 50 percent of the energy the planet receives from the sun.For example, the Gulf Stream carries heat across the Atlantic. This warm current gives northwestern Europe a milder climate than it would normally have so far north.A change to the ocean’s circulation (循环) patterns could throw Europe into a colder period, even as the rest of world experiences warmer temperatures.

4.We can infer from the passage that ________.

  A.the oceans cause global warming

  B.the oceans stop global warming

C.the oceans release heat and nutrients

D.the ocean ecosystems face more dangers

5.From the passage we can learn that the ocean’s currents ________.

  A.produce oxygen and nutrients everywhere

B.absorb 25~50% of the energy from the sun

  C.distribute heat and nutrients around

  D.change the ocean’s circulation patterns

6.Which of the following is NOT the result of the ocean absorbing heat and carbon dioxide?

  A.It causes further acidification.

  B.It affects shellforming species.

  C.It makes the atmosphere hotter.

  D.It regulates the Earth’s climate.

7.This passage mainly talks about ________.

  A.the roles of oceans

  B.global warming

  C.ocean currents

  D.carbon dioxide

Our kids spend at least 6 hours a day,180 days a year,at school.Sending them off to a safe, chemicalfree school is as important as establishing a clean and poisonousfree home.Helping your local school to go green is worth your time and energy and will set a wonderful example for your children.

What can concerned parents do to ensure that their children are not being exposed to dangerous chemicals when trying to learn? Can parents make a difference in the curriculum to be sure that their children are prepared for a green future when they graduate?

Parents can make a difference.Getting involved in your child’s education doesn’t mean stopping with homework help.Parental involvement in greening up our schools can go a long way in improving the learning environment for our children while protecting the Earth’s precious natural habitats.

Start an ecocommittee of parents and interested teachers to organize and direct green activities and efforts at your school. In middle schools and high schools, students should be present on the committee as well.

Find out if your school has an environmental mission statement-if they don’t,help establish one.Conduct an environmental survey of the buildings and grounds and create a plan of action based on the results.Get students involved in the plan of action and have teachers discuss the issues with their students.

Encourage teachers to include green topics in their curriculum.Offer to present a project or topic for discussion to your child’s class.

Buy your child leadfree lunch boxes.Send your child to school with a healthy lunch in a reusable container.Attempt to create a “trashfree”lunch.Buy your child a large, chemicalfree water bottle for them to use throughout the school day.Buy unbleached(本色的)recycledpaper notebooks.

If your older student carries a cell phone or laptop computer to school, consider a solar powered backpack to power her gadgets(装置).Buy backpacks made from recycled materials.Buy nonpoisonous school supplies including glue, crayons and markers.

Ask the teacher to use lowodor dry erasing markers and dustfree chalk.Offer to purchase them for the teacher if cost is an issue.Request that the school provide a clean, safe indoor environment and clean air by using nontoxic cleaners in the classrooms and throughout the building.

Request that school forms and notices be distributed through email whenever possible to cut back on paper use.Find coloring pages online. It is easy to find exactly what your child would like to color without having to buy—or waste—an entire coloring book that contains pages they are not interested in.

Encourage your child to get involved in the recycling effort within the school and to participate in any other goinggreen program, although it may be hard.

In a word,it would be difficult to have children get involved in the recycling effort within the school and participate in any other goinggreen program.Doing such things can give children’s daily life colorful meaning—it’s also a reason. If the program that you do is a challenge, set your goals and work hard. You will succeed.

Bobby Moresco grew up in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen,a tough workingclass neighborhood on Manhattan’s West Side. But Hell’s Kitchen lies right next door to Broadway, and the bright lights attracted Bobby from the time he was a teen.Being stagestruck was hardly what a street kid could admit to his buddies.Fearing being laughed at,he told no one, when he started taking acting lessons at age 17.If you were a kid from the neighborhood, you became a cop, construction worker, porter or criminal. Not an actor.

Moresco struggled to make that long walk a few blocks east.He studied acting, turned out for all the cattle calls (临时演员的招募)and during the decade of the 1970s made a total of $2,000.“I wasn’t a good actor, but I had a driving need to do something different with my life,” he says.

He moved to Hollywood, where he drove a cab and worked in a bar in the night.“My father said,‘Stop this craziness and get a job;you have a wife and daughter.’”But Moresco kept working at his chosen craft.

Then in 1983 his younger brother Thomas was murdered in one of moblinked killings (黑帮火并).Moresco moved back to his old neighborhood and started writing as a way to explore the pain of Hell’s Kitchen.HalfDeserted Streets, based on his brother’s killing, opened at a small OffBroadway theater in 1988.A Hollywood producer saw it and asked him to work on a screenplay.

His reputation grew, and he got enough assignments to move back to Hollywood.By 2003,he was again out of work and out of cash when he got a call from Paul Haggis,a director who had befriended him.Haggis wanted to help writing a film about the country after September 11.The two worked on the script, but every studio in town turned it down. They kept selling it.Studio administrators, however, thought no one wanted to see an honest vision of race and fear and lives in conflict in modern America.

Moresco believed so strongly in the script that he borrowed money, and sold his house. He and Haggis kept pushing. At last the writers found an independent film producer who would take a chance, but the upfront money was so little,Moresco delayed his salary.

Crash slipped into the theaters in May 2005,and quitely became both a big hit and a critical success. It was nominated for six Academy Awards and won three-Best Picture,Best Film Editing and Best Writing (Original Screenplay) by Paul Haggis and the kid from Hell’s Kitchen.

At age 54,Bobby Moresco became an overnight success.“If you have something you want to do in life, don’t think about the problems,”he says,“think about the ways to get it done.”

Canada’s wealth comes from the exploitation of its rich natural resources and from the work of its citizens.Canadians are employed in a variety of jobs. All of these jobs can be grouped into one of three categories:extractive industries, manufacturing industries and service industries.

Industries that take raw materials from the natural environment are called extractive or primary industries.Canada has a wealth of natural resources. The extractive industries that have been developed to exploit these natural resources make an important contribution to the wealth of our economy.Without these extractive industries, and the money they bring from other countries,Canada’s economy could not exist in its present form.Yet only a small percentage of

Canada’s labour force works in extractive industries.Extractive industries rely on laboursaving machines instead of human labour.

Manufacturing industries process the products of extractive industries into finished products.Manufacturing industries transform raw materials into many different forms to be used by consumers or by other companies. This processing may be done in one or more stages. For example, iron ore is transformed into steel in factories. This is called primary manufacturing. The steel is then sent to companies for further processing into cars, mining equipment, machines, nails, and other products-such as bicycle frames. This is called secondary manufacturing.

Manufacturing industries are located in many towns and cities across Canada.Companies try to build their factories in densely populated areas because they want to near the people who buy their products. If they locate near their customers, then they save money on shipping costs.

Manufacturing industries provide more jobs to Canadians than do extractive industries.Yet the number of people employed in manufacturing is still small in comparison to the third category, services. As with extractive industries, manufacturing process use many machines that require relatively few workers.

Service industries provide services needed by the extractive and manufacturing industries, and by society in general.Without these services, society could not operate. The majority of Canadian workers do not produce “goods” in their jobs.Instead, they provide “services” for others. The range of services is very great and includes such things as retailing, office work, education, health care, communications, government, transportation, and personal services.

Service industries in one form or another are spread over the entire country. In every community there are stores, banks, schools, police forces, and dozens of other services. The majority of service industries are found in town and cities because services are provided for people and there are many more people in urban areas.

Canada’s economy depends upon the creation of jobs in all three types of industry.

On Aug.9,1945,my greatuncle was out fishing in the Pacific, far enough away from Nagasaki,Japan, that he missed the immediate impact of the atom bomb dropped by the Americans that day.My greataunt was in their new house outside Nagasaki;the entire family had only a few days earlier fled the city because my greatuncle feared a repeat of the bombing of Hiroshima.

I heard this story many times during my childhood.Back then,it made me feel that my greatuncle was a clever man.As an adult,I realized he was also very lucky, because cleverness alone cannot keep you safe.

For 36 hours after the earthquake and tsunami(海啸) that severely destroyed the east coast of Japan on Friday,I was unable to get any word from my relatives who take care of and live in our family’s Buddhist temple in Iwaki City, south of Sendai, the biggest city near the center of the earthquake.I wondered if they were too lucky and smart.

I wanted to know, and I did not want to know.I dipped into the world of the Internet, with its videos of water flooding the farmland and heavily damaged ferrise, and then quickly backed out because the images of the coastline do not match the Japan that I know.

All this has happened even though Japan is arguably better prepared than any other country when it comes to earthquakes and other natural disasters.

When I was a child growing up in California,my Japanese mother would ask me,“How do you know a tsunami is coming?”“When the ocean starts to disappear,”I would say.“And then what do you do?”“Drop everything and run up a hill.”

The people of Fukushima would have been taught this as well, and yet most would have had only 15 minutes to understand they

had just experienced an earthquake,to notice the sea was retreating, and escape.

After 36 hours,I get through to my family at the temple in Iwaki. My relatives are unharmed, but there are new fears of a catastrophic meltdown(熔毁)at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, just 30 miles away. One of the family cars is full of gas,and they convince me that they can escape at a moment’s notice.Fuel is in short supply,so in this, they are lucky.

I would like them to leave right away, but they refuse to flee. The job of the keepers of a Buddhist temple, aftet all,is to help lead souls into and through the afterlife.Since they were children,my cousins have held wakes, chanted sutras(佛经)over dead bodies, and foreseen the needs of those in mourning.Nuclear dust or no nuclear dust, their neighbors will need them.

After 48 hours, the phone lines are not working again.I sit and wait.

Recently a group of eight public high school students, aged 15 to 17,in western Massachusetts designed and ran their own school within a school. They represented the usual range:two were close to dropping out before they started the project, while others were honors students. They named their school the Independent Project.

Their guidance counselor was their adviser, consulting with them when the group came up against an obstacle(障碍).Though they sought advice from English, math and science teachers, they were responsible for monitoring one another’s work and giving one another feedback. There were no grades, but when they have finished one course, the students wrote evaluations of their classmates.

At the beginning of the term, the students made their own curriculum, deciding to split their SeptembertoJanuary term into two halves.

During the first half, they designed and then answered questions about the natural and social world, including “Are the plant cells at the bottom of a nearby mountain different than those at the top of the mountain?” and “Why do we cry?”.They not only doubted one another’s questions, but also the answers they came up with.

During the second half, the group practiced what they called“the literary and mathematical arts.”They chose eight novels to read in eight weeks. That is more than the school’s English class reads in an entire year.Meanwhile, each of them focused on specific mathematical topics. They sought the help of their teachers, consulted books and online sources and, whenever possible, taught one another.

They also each undertook an “individual effort”,learning to play the piano or to cook,or writing a novel. At the end of the term, they performed these new skills in front of the entire school.Because they felt the whole experience had been so lifechanging, they ended up making a film showing how other students could start and run their own schools.

The students in the Independent Project are remarkable but not because they are exceptionally motivated or unusually talented. They are remarkable because they show the kinds of learning and personal growth that are possible when teenagers feel ownership of their high school experience, when they learn things that matter to them and when they learn together.

We have tried making the school day longer and blanketing students with standardized tests. But perhaps children don’t need another reform.Instead, they need to be the authors of their own education.

Imagine that you are in school or college, giving a presentation to your class.Or perhaps you are a business leader making an important presentation at a shareholders meeting. Now think what it feels like when stammering(口吃) makes it a struggle to communicate your thoughts and feelings to other people.

In the recent film The King’s Speech,Colin Firth stars as Britain’s King George VI.He won Oscar glory for his fascinating performance as Britain’s stammering wartime king.As well as being richly entertaining, the film has highlighted the problem of stammering along with other speechrelated problems. As a result of Firth’s convincing performance, people are starting to realize that stammering is more than an annoying condition.

Stammering, along with other speech disabilities, can ruin a person’s selfconfidence and cause them to withdraw, even from situations and people they would normally enjoy.“The problem is unseen and unheard,”said Norbert Lieckfeldt, chief executive of the British Stammering Association in an interview with The Guardian

newspaper.According to The Communication Trust, more than 1 million children and young people in the UK have some sort of longterm speech or communication difficulty. In the UK and the US,despite stammering being legally recognized as a disability, many misunderstandings remain.

According to anxietyzone.com.,a website which explores and explains many conditions and disorders, the vast majority of stammerers face bullying (欺负) and ridicule in school,a trend which is usually carried over into the workplace.

Samantha Mesango,a speech coach based in the UK,said in an interview with The Messenger newspaper that speech problems are more common than most people realize, and that The King’s Speech highlighted an important issue.“In the case of George VI,his severe stammer took away his confidence as a speaker. However, clients come to me for any number of reasons. Some simply don’t like the sound of their own voice;others are scared of speaking in public;while others feel that their accent prevents them developing professionally.”

Dr.Travis Treats, chair of Saint Louis University’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, also picked out The King’s Speech for praise.Treats commented in an interview published on the university’s website:“The key to the movie is how one’s speech does not define what one is inside.”

“We know that those affected by stammering deserve a voice. They are worthy of acknowledgement

for all that they are capable of contributing to society,”Treats said.

Lieckfeldt agrees.“This film gives us a onceinageneration chance to create a step change in the public’s opinion of people who stammer. We’re just the same as everyone else.Sometimes we just can’t get our mouths to do what we want them to do.”
