  Ⅱ.阅读理解

Nineteen-year-old Christopher Paolini has always loved adventure books. In fact,he plotted out his first book,Eragon, when he was just fifteen! Eragon is selling more copies than most of the Harry Potter books.A reporter from Who’s News talked to this young author about his books and how he ended up being one of the best-selling authors of all time!

  Reporter:____________________

Christopher Paolini(CP):I love fantasy.I love the sense of awe and wonder that you always get at the end of a great book or movie.Eragon was an attempt to express that. When I was about twelve, I read a book called Jeremy Thatcher,Dragon Hatcher. It’s about a young boy who went into a mysterious shop and bought a dragon egg that ends up hatching. It stuck in my head.Eragon was an attempt to see what I could do with the idea myself.

Reporter:Where else do you get your ideas?

CP:I’m definitely influenced by authors who have a fairly inventive use of language, imaginative worlds and a sense of wonder-authors who write about things that other people don’t.

Reporter:What was the hardest thing about writing Eragon?

CP:Probably the editing because I wasn’t used to it.It was a kind of shock doing it.But also I was having to learn a huge amount about grammar and commas and other things I’d never paid much attention to before.I’d say that editing and writing are pretty much equal in difficulty. My raw writing is a lot more professional now than it ever was before because of everything I learned through the editing process.

Reporter:How do you avoid becoming frustrated with the writing process?

CP:Write about what you enjoy the most or what touches you the most; otherwise you’ll never be able to survive a book-length project.

Reporter:Anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

CP:Before I wrote Eragon,I spent an entire month plotting out the entire story so I wasn’t writing blindly. That helps.I really poured my heart and soul into it.It’s not just an adventure story:it is about Eragon trying to work out who we are,why we are here and how we can live honorably.

1.The reporter’s first question is most likely to be“________”.

A.What’s the most interesting thing about Eragon?

B.What inspired you to write Eragon?

C.How has your writing improved after Eragon?

D.How long did it take you to write Eragon?

2.What does the underlined word“that”refer to in the third paragraph?

  A.A story.

B.The sense of awe and wonder.

  C.An idea.

  D.A great book or movie.

3.What does Paolini find as difficult as writing?

  A.Plotting out the story.

  B.Grammar and commas.

  C.The editing process.

  D.The creative use of language.

4.Which of the following BEST indicates Paolini devoted himself completely to writing Eragon?

A.“Write about what you enjoy the most or what touches you the most.”

B.“Eragon was an attempt to see what I could do with the idea myself.”

C.“I spent an entire month plotting out the entire story.”

D.“I really poured my heart and soul into it.”

One month into my French degree course at Nottingham University,I was eager to travel around, having just spent a year working as a teacher in Nepal. Two years later,my schedule reads more like a traveller’s than a student’s does, having spent 18 months abroad under university programmes.

I have seen many students abandon their studies, desiring to see the world before making any long-term decisions. My advice for would-be globe travellers is to choose a degree subject that you find truly interesting, and use the resources available to see as much of the world as possible. So no longer does the “travel or study” question need an either/or response;with a little research and organization,it’s possible to combine the two.Two programmes that allow you to do this are “Erasmus” and “U21”.

The Erasmus Programme aims to increase student mobility within the European Union and associated states.Participants under this programme get to spend a semester (学期) at a foreign university, often receiving a grant (助学金) from the EU or their home department.By the start of the next academic year, more than one million students will have benefited under Erasmus. Not only do you get to sit through hours of lectures in the local language, you also gain cultural experience in the country.France,Germany and Spain are always popular, but the EU encourages applications to countries where less popular languages are spoken, such as Greece and Protugal.Theoretically, students of any subject can participate in the Erasmus Programme, although it depends on the involvement of your specific department in the project. The reality is that,in many universities, the programme is most commonly intended for modern language students.

For a French student like me,Melbourne in Australia seems an unlikely destination, yet I was sent there in my second year.U21 is a multinational association of universities throughout the world, which have united to offer their students the opportunity to study abroad for a semester. The applicant’s destination depends on the links between their department and the corresponding departments of member universities, which can be found in countries such as New Zealand,China,Singapore,Canada,Sweden and the United States.

5.What happened to many students who travelled while studying?

A.They chose a degree subject that they found truly interesting.

  B.They abandoned their studies.

C.They used the resources available to see the world.

D.They responded to the “travel or study” question.

6.Who is most likely to be chosen by the Erasmus Programme?

  A.A student from the EU.

B.A student who would be a global traveller.

  C.A modern language student.

D.A student involved in a specific department.

7.Which of the following can be the BEST title for the passage?

A.Seeing the World with University Students

B.Studying and Traveling in the European Union

  C.Experiencing Foreign Cultures

  D.Studying Abroad under University Programmes

  Census:everyone counts

BEIJING-Starting Monday, millions of Chinese census takers will fan out across the country, visiting more than 400 million households to try to get an accurate count of the population over a 10-day period.

The sixth census will use about 6.5 million census takers, each dressed in a uniform and bearing a certificate, asking everyone living and working on the mainland for information about their personal lives.

Anyone born before Monday gets included, and anyone born after Monday gets left out until the next one,in 2020,according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

About 90 percent of the people will be asked to fill in an 18-item form, covering their name, sex, ethnic group, household registration, and education; the other 10 percent, chosen randomly, will be asked to fill in a longer 45-question form.

Foreigners have it easier:they only have eight questions to answer.

One in 10,000 households will be visited again from Nov.11 to 30,with the NBS sorting and filing the data through December. In April 2011,the main census data will be made public.

Around 700 million yuan ($103 million) of central government funds will be spent on the census, according to official figures.

And,if the previous household visits are anything to go by,the census takers will not have an easy job, because many people worry about their privacy, not to mention the rapidly swelling migrant population in major cities.

Many census takers previously found that people simply refused to open their door to them.

According to Tan Bihua, one census taker in the southern city of Guangzhou, where the census started on Oct.25-ahead of the nationwide effort because of the 16th Asian Games-each person is responsible for about 120 to 150 households and the greatest difficulty is that they often cannot even find the people.

Tan said she had to pay eight visits to one household to get their information because they were migrant workers who had no regular work hours, according to the Southern Metropolis Daily.

In Beijing, most residents received a mobile phone message over the weekend, asking them to take part in a cooperative spirit.

Vice-Premier Li Keqiang,on Thursday, also asked for people to cooperate with the census takers so that the statistics will be more accurate.

Li promised that any personal information collected will be kept strictly confidential.

If people repeatedly refuse to open the door to the census takers, they have the right to ask the police for help, the Beijing News reported on Sunday.

For foreigners, who are being included in China’s census for the first time, special preparations have been made.

Yang Shu,deputy director of the census office of Maizidian,a multinational community in Beijing’s Chaoyang District, said their office has recruited volunteers with bilingual (双语) or multilingual skills to help with the census. They have translated the questionnaire into at least five languages, including the usual English,French and German.

“Foreigners’ lifestyles are different and sometimes it’s difficult to find them,so we suggest they make an appointment with the census takers-a time that is convenient for them,”Yang politely pointed out.

China holds its national census every 10 years. The previous one showed that the world’s most populous country had 1.29 billion people.

1.Which of the following is WRONG according to the passage?

A.Bilingual or multilingual skills are necessary in doing the census at times.

B.Because most of their family members are hard to find.

C.Because they worry about their own privacy being let out.

D.Because they are unwilling to cooperate with the census takers.

When she was a girl of sixteen and before she began to work in the store,Alice had dated a young man.The young man, named Ned Currie, was older than Alice. He was employed on the local newspaper and for a long time he went to see Alice almost every evening.Together the two walked under the trees through the streets of the town and talked of what they would do with their lives.Alice was then a very pretty girl and one night Ned took her into his arms and kissed her.He became excited and said things he did not intend to say and Alice, betrayed by her desire to have something beautiful come into her narrow life, also grew excited. She also talked. The outer crust(壳) of her life, all of her natural shyness and reserve, was torn away and she gave herself over to the emotions of love.

When, late in the fall,Ned went away to Cleveland to try to get a place on a city newspaper and rise in the world, she wanted to go with him.With_a_trembling_voice she told him what was in her mind.“I will work and you can work,”she said.“I don’t want to tie you to a needless expense that will stop you making progress.Don’t marry me now. We’ll get along without that and we can be together.Even though we live in the same house,no one will say anything. In the city we’ll be unknown and people will pay no attention to us.”

Ned was puzzled by his sweetheart’s determination and was also deeply touched. He had wanted a girlfriend just to relieve the boredom of his life but had changed his mind.He now wanted to protect her and care for her.“You don’t know what you’re talking about,”he said sharply,“I’ll let you do no such thing. As soon as I get a good job,I’ll come back. For the present you’ll have to stay here. It’s the only thing we can do.”

On the evening before he left Winesburg,Ned went to call on Alice. They walked about through the streets for an hour and then went for a drive in the country. The moon came up and they found themselves unable to talk. They stopped at a place where a long meadow ran down to the bank of Wine Creek and there in the dim light he kissed her and promised he would love her forever. When they returned to town,it did not seem to them that anything in the future could blot out (拭去) the wonder and beauty of that evening.“Now we will have to stick to each other;whatever happens,we will have to do that,”Ned said as he left the girl at her father’s door.

He did not succeed in getting a place on a Cleveland newspaper and went west to Chicago. For a time he was lonely and wrote to Alice almost every day. Then he was caught up by the life of the city; he began to make friends and found new interests in life.In Chicago he boarded at a house where there were several women. One of them attracted his attention and he forgot Alice in Winesburg. At the end of a year he had stopped writing letters, and only once in a long time, when he was lonely or when he went into one of the city parks and saw the moon shining on the grass as it had shone that night on the meadow by Wine Creek, did he think of her at all.

The International Space Station will establish a huge laboratory complex in space, more than four times the size and with almost 60 times the electrical power for experiments.Examples of the types of U.S.research that will be performed aboard the station include:

More pure protein crystals may be grown in space than on Earth.Similar experiments have already been conducted on the Space Shuttle. This type of research could lead to the study of possible treatments for cancer, immune system disorders and other diseases.

Living cells can be grown in a laboratory environment in space where they are not affected by gravity (引力).Growing cultures for long periods aboard the station will further advance this research.Such cultures can be used to test new treatments for cancer without risking harm to patients.

The effects of long-term exposure to reduced gravity on humans will be studied aboard the station.Studies of these effects may lead to a better understanding of the body systems and similar illnesses on Earth and may provide information useful for future space travels.

Fluids (液体),flames, metal and other materials will be the subject of basic research on the station. Scientists plan to study this field to create more perfect materials for applications. The study of all of these areas may lead to developments that can develop many industries on Earth.

Some experiments aboard the station will take place on the outside of the station.Such outer space experiments can study the space environment and how long-term exposure to space affects materials. This research can help better understand the nature of space, improve spacecraft design and help explain how the universe developed.

Observations of the Earth from space help the study of large-scale,long-term changes in the environment of the earth.Studies in this field can increase understanding of the forests, oceans and mountains. The effects of volcanoes, hurricanes and typhoons can be studied. In addition, changes to the Earth that are caused by the human race can be observed.

As part of the Commercialization of space research on the station, industries will participate in research by conducting experiments and studies aimed at developing new products and services. The results may benefit those on Earth not only by providing new products as a result, but also by creating new jobs to make the products.

When a couple decides to marry, they naturally inform both sets of parents and stepparents before having a party planned or telling all their friends. The days are long gone of the man going trembling to the girl’s father and saying,“Sir,may I have the honor of having the hand of your daughter in marriage?”However,a wise couple always discuss their plans for marriage with their respective families, and a young man often suggests a “financial talk” with his future father-in-law before the latter is faced with the embarrassment of asking for one.Even if a young woman has supported herself and lives away from home, her parents have the right to know how her fiance proposes to handle the long-range financing of their family and home. The fiancé should state his income, his savings, and his future expectations, without overstating any of them.

Engagement parties are given by the parents of the bride-to-be or by a relative of the bride acting for her parents, usually just before the newspaper announcement of the engagement. If the bride-to-be and her fiancé live in a city other than her parents,it is better for her parents to go to the city than her to go home to them for the engagement party. She and her fiancé will, after all,be partied in her parents’ hometown during the wedding festivities. However,if the family home is not far away,it is proper for the engaged couple to travel there for the announcement party. The young man’s family should be invited, too. If the bride’s parents are no longer living, then a relative or a close friend can give the party. It is usually a simple cocktail’s party, champagne served for toasts to the engaged couple.

If the party is very large, the engaged couple and the girl’s parents might form a receiving line-but they do not have to.The bride-to-be usually wears her engagement ring officially for the first time on this occasion. If she has a gift for the groom-to-be,she gives it to him right before or after the engagement party.

For Americans, the traditional engagement ring is a diamond solitaire (单粒宝石).However, today anything goes-a ring with many colored stones,a ring with a large semi-precious stone,an heirloom(传家宝)ring reset in a modern design,or even a stone in the bride’s family, simply reset in a Tiffany setting. The wedding ring will be of the same metal as the engagement ring. Some girls prefer no engagement ring but choose a wedding band that is decorated with stones instead. No one has to have an engagement ring.A girl may want her fiancé to give her a pearl necklace instead,or a jeweled watch.Jeweled rings can be given as gifts on many occasions during the married lives-such as wedding anniversaries, the birth of a child,or an important job promotion.

1.According to the first paragraph, young men________.

A.must tell all their friends before planning a party

B.used to feel afraid of going to meet their girlfriends’

  parents

C.must promise that their family could support them

D.must guarantee they live away from home already

2.The underlined word “one” in the first paragraph most probably means________.

  A.a marriage

  B.a plan

  C.a financial talk

  D.an embarrassment

3.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.The bride-to-be and her fiancé will have to wait in line with both of their parents.

B.If the girl’s parents are dead,a relative or a close friend gives a party on their behalf.

C.The engagement party is usually given before the newspaper announcement.

D.It’s no longer necessary to give a diamond solitaire as the engagement ring.

4.We can infer from the last paragraph that________.

A.a young man can give his wife a jeweled watch on the birthday of their child

B.the heirloom must be reset in a modern design

C.the engagement ring and the wedding ring are different

D.some girls don’t mind what they are given for the engagement

As common as it is,scratching to relieve an itch has long been considered a biological mystery:Are cells at the surface of the skin somehow tired in need of outside stimulation (刺激)?Or is the relief of the stimulation centered in the brain?

Perhaps neither one,a new study suggests.Neuroscientists report that specialized cells in the spinal cord (脊髓) appear to be critically involved in producing the feeling of an itch and the feeling of relief after the application of fingernails,at least in healthy individuals.

“It’s a very important study;itching is a major problem for millions of patients,” said Dr.Gil Yosipovitch.

Dr.Yosipovitch cautioned that the findings may not apply to chronic (习惯性的) itches.“But this is the kind of work that should help open this area up to more research.”

The researchers isolated (孤立) in monkeys cellular (细胞的) connections that run from the surface of the foot to the spinal cord and then to the part for feelings in the brain. They caused the feeling of itchiness by injecting something under the skin. They chose some cells at base of spinal cord. Most are sensitive to pain and some to both pain and itchiness. And when the researchers scratched the itchy skin on the monkeys’ feet,it quieted the cell’s activity.

Scientists argue that itching is most likely related to grooming (动物的梳毛),and evolved to protect animals against poisonous plants. But the biology of the itch has been a mystery and ignored for years by researchers who have been far more focused on pain.

It is suggested that itch, like pain, may be a “gated” system where signals from other nerve cells can interfere with the feeling.Scratching the skin near, but not directly on,the spot that itches often provides relief, just as rubbing an aching arm can reduce pain.

As with some kinds of pain, small reminders of an itching feeling can get people scratching, often without being entirely aware of it.“I give lectures about itching,”Dr.Giesler said,“and I’ll stand up there in front of a whole roomful of people, show a few slides and pretty soon I’ll look out and 90 percent of the audience is scratching.”

Dr.Yosipovitch said there was a long way to go before doctors could expect treatments. For one thing, the miserable, chronic itch common in many medical problems most likely involves other mechanisms (机制).“But I feel excited about this finding,”he said.“It’s a sign that this field is really evolving.”

  5.The new study shows that________.

A.scratching to relieve an itch remains a vast mystery

B.scratching seems to calm the nerves and therefore relieve itches

C.scratching can be an effective treatment for all itches

D.the relief of the stimulation is centered in the brain

6.Researchers have always overlooked the biology of the itch because________.

A.they consider it of no medical value

B.they are more focused on pain

C.they consider it too easy to study

D.they consider it too tough to study

7.What can we infer from the text?

A.All cells at the base of spinal cord are more likely to suffer pain and itchiness.

B.The cells at the surface of the skin usually require outside stimulation.

C.Some cells in the spinal cord can transmit information about itchiness to the brain.

D.Some animals scratch an itch because they can get close to dangerous plants.

8.The case of Dr.Giesler’s speech is taken as an example to prove that________.

A.the feeling of itching can be passed on to others

B.it’s a sign that this field is really evolving

C.there was a long way to go before doctors could expect treatments

Life is what we make of it.How can we make our life better?Through focus—focusing on one thing and getting it done.Learning to focus can help us in many ways.It can help us realize what we really want in life.It can help us make good decisions. It can also help us accept ourselves just the way we are.Focus can help us gain power and happiness.

Focus,or concentration,is a skill that can be taught,so there are some exercises you can do to improve your focus.Start with easy exercises like staring at a picture on the wall for a few minutes without moving or talking to anyone.Once you learn how to block out your surroundings, your focus will improve.

Learn to manage your pressure. Many athletes require intense focus in their training and games. They try to spare some time to calm themselves down.It isn’t enough to just practice your shots because when game time comes, the stress and tension can make one miss a shot. This is when focus comes into play.

Another mind exercise you can do is picturing yourself in a desired situation, and then you work around your picture.Actors do this a lot to block out laughter or noise. An example of this would be to imagine yourself in a potentially stressful situation, like a singer in a concert.Try to play out the scene in your mind what you would do if different things are to happen. This can actually be a lot of fun,and you learn how to improve your focus by concentrating on one thing only.

If this sounds a little strange to you,you could try another strategy. Why not make lists?Make a list of the things you need to accomplish.Study your lists carefully and see where you can move things around.Planning helps you focus. It will also not stress you out.

A better way to improve your focus is to take breaks.Don’t spend it with your co-workers beside the coffee machine talking about problems in the office.Doing this will actually cause your stress and cause you to lose focus on the things that need to be done.Your breaks should be as quiet as possible.Read a book or take a walk.Go and do something that will give your brain a rest.

The reason why we lose focus so easily is because we have too much on our minds.Of course,it could also because you are bored with nothing to do.A good balance between a too relaxed brain and a too active brain is necessary.Find your ability to work, and try not to waste your time.Improving your focus also mean knowing what you can do and being confident about doing it well.

  Crossing the Rubicon

The march to Italy began. The soldiers were even more enthusiastic than Caesar (凯撒) himself. They climbed mountains, waded rivers, endured tiredness, and faced all kinds of danger for the sake of their great leader.

At last they came to a little river called the Rubicon (卢比孔河).It was the boundary line of Caesar’s Province of Gaul;on the other side of it was Italy.Caesar paused a moment on the bank.He knew that to cross it would be to declare war against Pompey and the Roman Senate;it would involve all Rome in a fearful battle, the end of which no man could foresee.

But he did not hesitate long.He gave the word, and rode boldly across the shallow stream.

“We have crossed the Rubicon,”he cried as he reached the farther shore.“There is now no turning back.” Soon the news was carried to Rome:“Caesar has crossed the Rubicon;”and there was great fear among those who had planned to destroy him.Pompey’s soldiers deserted him and hurried to join themselves to Caesar’s army. The Rome senators and their friends made ready to escape from the city.

“Caesar has crossed the Rubicon!”was shouted along the roads and byways leading to Rome;and the country people turned out to meet and hail with joy the conquering hero.

The word was carried a second time to the city:“Caesar has crossed the Rubicon,”and the wild flight began.Senators and public officers left everything behind and hurried away to seek safety with Pompey. On foot,on horseback,in litters,in carriages, they fled for their lives-all because Caesar had crossed the Rubicon.Pompey was unable to protect them.He hurried to the seacoast, and, with all who were able to accompany him, sailed away to Greece.

One in five U.S.teenagers have some degree of hearing loss, according to researchers who said the problem is growing.“Teenagers really underestimate how much noise they are exposed to.”Dr.Josef Shargorodsky said.__①__

The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, compared national surveys between the early 1990s and the mid-2000s.In the first survey, about 15 percent of teenagers had some degree of hearing loss.__②__Most of the hearing loss was in one ear only. While it was usually slight, one in 20 adolescents had more pronounced (显著的) problems-up 50 percent since the first survey.

Hearing loss is very common in the elderly, said Alison Grimes,an ear doctor, but she added that it was concerning to see it come into the younger age groups. In babies and young children, hearing problems are known to delay language development, which in turn influences performance in other areas.Slight hearing loss, for instance, makes it difficult to distinguish between high-frequency consonants like “s” and “f”.

__③__The science is less clear for adolescents, but it is easy to imagine how being hard of hearing could influence learning, said Grimes.“We know from a lot of data that noisy classrooms are one of the biggest challenges to learning.”

The reasons for the rise are still uncertain. When asked about noise exposure-on the job, from firearms or recreational activities, for instance—the teenagers didn’t indicate any change. But Shargorodsky said,“We knew from before that it is difficult to ask this age group about noise exposure-they underestimate it.”__④__Although it’s not clear that these devices are to blame,Grimes said it was still a good idea to turn down the volume. But she pointed out the advice would likely fall on deaf ears. She said the American Academy of Hearing had also contacted Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple, about adding a volume limiter on iPods. But they never heard back.

5.In which place should the sentence “Few people would call it noise when they listen to music on their MP3 player, for instance.” be put?

  A.① B.②

  C.③

  D.④

6.What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?

A.Hearing loss was very common in the elderly in the country.

B.The sounds like “s” and “f” are hard to distinguish by babies.

C.The number of teenagers with hearing problems is decreasing.

D.Babies and teenagers are also facing problems of hearing loss.

7.Which of the following is TRUE?

A.The reasons of the hearing loss are known to the researchers.

B.The surveys have been carried out for at least 15 years.

C.The reasons for the rise are clear to the researchers.

D.The results of surveys have been published in a newspaper.

8.The American Academy of Hearing contacted the CEO of Apple in order to________.

To cultivate one’s taste in English prose (散文),the most effective way is to read English books extensively.Yet one may be at a loss to choose the appropriate books, especially as a beginner.I would like to share some of my experience.

My first English novel was Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, recommened by many English teachers and professors as an ideal book for English learners. But my experience was somewhat disastrous.Stumbling along the lines,I had great difficulty in understanding the novel, let alone enjoying it.It’s not the vocabulary that troubled me,but rather the way Austen constructs sentences, and her way of thinking, which seemed too remote to me at that time.My fading enthusiasm was much recovered after reading Hemingway’s novel Farewell to Arms. No long and complicated sentences. And I particularly liked his concise and straightforward style. So my first suggestion is, as a beginner, you’d better choose contemporary novels instead of classical ones. You can easily engage yourself in reading, get fun out of it,and gradually build up confidence.I do not mean to exclude classical novels forever.Actually, the second reading of Pride and Prejudice greatly pleased me (probably the result of my improved English comprehension). It is only that classical novels are less accessible to beginners due to their language styles and social background. I’d like to recommend three contemporary novelists to you—Ursula Le Guin,Ernest Hemingway, and Doris Lessing.

However, reading novels is not the only way to improve your English. In fact,if you restrict yourself to novels you will miss a lot of treasures.English essays can at once inform you, entertain you,and refine your taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russell’s work. Its language is plain, yet you cannot help feeling the elegance and the peculiar sense of humor. His simple language enables his philosophy within the reach of ordinary people. The same is true of George Orwell’s work. Here comes my second suggestion—essays are necessary.

My last advise is never follow others’ recommendations and opinions blindly, however famous or influential the person might be.Some days ago,I listened to the audiobook of Somerset Maugham’s autobiography The Summing Up.In a chapter he regards Edward Gibbon and Samuel Johnson’s style as pompous.Though I admire Maugham’s prose,I cannot agree with his view.Probably one can label Johnson’s work as pretentious, but definitely not Gibbon’s.In fact, his lucid style makes his works highly readable, and you can hardly believe they were written over 200 years ago. Therefore,we should be open to various ideas, but always think and determine for ourselves. As a saying goes, one man’s meat is another man’s poison. With that in mind,we are bound to find out our favourite writers through reading and develop our fine taste in English.

Farmers grow cocoa trees in the shady areas of rainforests near the Earth’s equator. These trees can be difficult to grow. They require an exact amount of water, warmth, soil and protection. After about five years, cocoa trees start producing large fruits called pods. The seeds inside these pods are harvested to make chocolate.

Today we travel around the world exploring the history of chocolate. Its story begins with a plant whose scientific name,Theobroma cocoa, means “food of the gods”.People have been enjoying the rich flavor of chocolate,a product made from this plant.

Most people know that chocolate is made from cocoa and that the origins of chocolate can be traced back to Central and South America. For centuries, the natives there regarded cocoa as a gift from the gods. But how did chocolate go from being the food of the gods to being the food of love?

Historians believe the Maya of Central America first learned to farm cocoa plants around two thousand years ago.The Maya took the cocoa trees from the rainforests and grew them in their gardens. They cooked the cocoa seeds, and then crushed them into a soft substance. They used the cocoa bean as the main part in a dark, bitter drink that we would call “chocolate”.They believed that chocolate had mystical properties-but cocoa also had commercial value. In fact, cocoa beans were used as a form of currency that was worth its weight in gold!

The explorer Christopher Columbus brought cocoa seeds to Spain after his trip to Central America in 1502.But the Spanish explorer Conquistador Hernando Cortez was the first European explorer to realize cocoa’s commercial possibilities. When he arrived in the New World in 1519, he soon established his own cocoa plantation. In 1529,Cortez returned to Spain and introduced chocolate-as a drink mixed with sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon—to European society.

The wealthy people of Spain first enjoyed a sweetened version of the chocolate drink.Later, the popularity of the drink spread throughout Europe. The English,Dutch and French began to plant cocoa trees in their own colonies.Chocolate remained a drink that only wealthy people could afford to drink until the eighteenth century.During the period known as the Industrial Revolution, new technologies helped make chocolate less costly to produce.

It caught on—especially with the noble people, who enjoyed hot chocolate as an aphrodisiac (a kind of medicine). As its popularity spread, people found new ways to make and use chocolate. These days, chocolate is enjoyed as both a tasty treat and a romantic indulgence everywhere.

Canada is a land with abundant fresh water. In the past it may have seemed that the fresh water resources were limitless.Over time, however, water pollution has damaged this resource.

There are three main types of water pollution:physical, biological, and chemical.Perhaps the least harmful but most obvious form of pollution is the physical variety.Floating garbage, old tires, pieces of paper, pop cans and bottles are not pleasant to look at.But this pollution is easily seen and its clean-up and prevention are relatively simple.

Biological contamination refers to bacteria and algae that enter lakes and rivers from a variety of sources.Waste water from cities and towns is the largest source of biological contamination. While most waste water is treated, not all treatment is adequate. Some enters water bodies without any treatment at all.

Some bacteria that occur naturally in rivers and lakes are able to cleanse biological pollution from the water over time.Human beings are, however, overloading many water bodies to the point where there is too much waste for the natural purification process to be effective.

The most dangerous form of water pollution results from the dumping of poisonous chemical wastes into the lakes and rivers. These wastes are often colourless, odourless, and tasteless in the water but they can be deadly! What makes things worse is that the water bodies where these chemicals are dumped are often the source of drinking water for millions of people.

Some industries have been dumping toxic chemicals into the water supplies for years. The Great Lakes in North America have been referred to as a “chemical soup” because of the number of chemicals dumped into them.In fact,42 “toxic hot spots” have been identified in the Great Lakes where there are particular problems with the accumulation of toxic chemicals.Thirty-two percent of Canadians and thirteen percent of Americans live in the Great Lakes basin. These 40 million people are exposed to hundreds of potentially dangerous chemicals produced by industries. Many of these chemicals have been found in the bodies of fish and gulls that live in and around the Great Lakes. This proves that the chemicals are in the food chain.

The quality of the water is also threatened by pesticides(杀虫剂) used on farms. These chemicals, which protect the food supply from animal pests, disease, and weeds, are washed from farmers’ fields into rivers and lakes.

There is,however, some good news. Government studies indicate that the levels of many contaminants in the Great Lakes have been declining since the 1970s.Restrictions on the manufacture and use of mercury, many pesticides, and PCBs have resulted in reduced contaminant levels in fish.

It is a long way to fight against water pollution.Much has to be done to protect our living space.

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!)—More young American adults are living with their parents due to the economic downturn and a lack of jobs in a phenomenon dubbed “full nest syndrome,” according to new research.

The study showed that last year 52.8 percent of Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 were tiring at home, compared with 47.3 in 1970.

“Unfavorable employment conditions make school and educational investments a more attractive option for some young adults,”said Vanessa Wight of Columbia University in New York.

“It may also make living at home a necessity for young adults who cannot afford to live on their own,” the senior researcher at the National Center for Children in Poverty,a think tank at the university, added.

The study also showed that one in seven young adults is emerging from their teenage years with no pathway to financial and economic independence.

Wight added that the transition (转变) to adulthood is becoming increasingly delayed, unlike previous decades when reaching adulthood meant leaving home, getting married and having children.

The researchers, who used data from the U.S.Current Population Survey, found that delayed adulthood coincided with a dramatic increase in the number of young Americans enrolled in school. The number rose from less than 30 percent in 1970 to 45.5 percent in 2008.

Young adults are also delaying marriage and starting a family. In 1970,the median age for a first marriage was 20.8 for women and 23.2 for men, compared to 25.9 for women and 28.1 for men in 2009.

“Some research suggests that the notion of adulthood is changing and that marriage and parenthood, once the hallmarks of adult status, are no longer as important to defining a successful transition to adulthood,”Wight said.

“Others have argued that changes in values and attitudes have contributed to rising individualism. So,we are less willing to get married,”she added.

American-Indians and Alaskan native communities had the highest percentage of young adults who were not financially and economically independent.

“Relative to other race/ethnic groups, they have historically suffered from poor employment opportunities within their community, higher unemployment rates, and a range of factors such as high rates of depression,”she said.

Wight believes that a public policy approach can help ameliorate (改善) the long-term impact of young disconnection.

“We need to focus on keeping children and youth on track to be connected in young adulthood...And we need to focus on reconnecting those who fall off the track and fail to launch.”

New discoveries suggest that trade between Europe and Asia along the Silk Road probably began many centuries earlier than once thought. The findings add a fascinating new page to the epic (史诗) of the Silk Road, which spread far and wide in no time.

The latest and most surprising discovery is pieces of silk found in the hair of an Egyptian mummy from about 1,000 BC,long before regular traffic on the Silk Road and at least one thousand years before silk was previously thought to be used in Egypt.Other research may extend human activity along this route back even further, perhaps a million years to the moving of human ancestors into eastern Asia.

The official origin of East-West trade along the road is usually placed in the late 2nd century BC when an agent of the Chinese Emperor Wu-di returned from a dangerous secret mission (使命) across the desert into the remote high country of Central Asia. The agent,Zhang Qian, travelled as far as Afghanistan and brought back knowledge of even more distant lands such as Persia,Syria and a place known as Lijien, perhaps Rome.Historians have called this one of the most important journeys in ancient times. His journey opened the way for what have been thought to be the first indirect contacts between the ancient world’s two superpowers,China and Rome.Chinese silk, first traded to Central Asia for war horses, was soon finding its way to the markets of Rome through a network of businessmen.

But the new discoveries show that Chinese silk apparently existed in the West long before the Han emperor started organizing trade over the Silk Road. The research could change thinking about the early history of world trade and provide insights (了解) into the mystery of just how and when Europe first realized the glorious culture at the other end of Eurasia.

  “Who questions much,shall learn much,and remember much.”—Francis Bacon (1561~1626)

It seems obvious now how we acquire knowledge and understanding. To start with, you need questions. Then,to find answers, you observe the world around you and study the facts. After that you consider possible answers and test each to find the right ones.Although today we are more accustomed to typing a few key words into a search engine and waiting for the Internet to spit the answers out for us,modern scientists and thinkers are still solving the world’s problems with this type of analysis—luckily for us.

However,in the 17th century when Francis Bacon suggested that this type of thinking was the way to gain knowledge,he was going against the views of the day.At that time, people believed more in religion than in facts, and people like Galileo Galilei, who proved scientific ideas such as “the Earth is not the centre of the universe”,were often punished by the church with no one coming to their defence. The church and many people tended to ignore the facts and were unwilling to challenge what they had always comfortably believed. They preferred to make assumptions about the world based on the experience of others. In fact, when Galilei proved that the Earth was not the centre of the universe, instead of believing him, people chose to believe ancient views put forward by the great philosopher Aristotle (384~322 BC).

This also shows how people didn’t want to search for their own understanding or educate themselves. And this is still often true today.People feel that if someone important and respected says that something is right, then it must be so.But even though Aristotle was a great man who inspired many great scientists and philosophers after him,he was wrong at times. And Galilei too made mistakes. He is now known as the father of astronomy but he believed that the earth moved round the sun in a perfect circle. He was wrong. Therefore our understanding of the world around us is constantly growing and changing. In other words,we learn more every day and none of us can ever sit back and say “We know it all.”

We need to thank the great men of the past for the wisdom to know that we don’t know it all and probably never will, for that would mean a world without questions. So much of our knowledge and understanding of the world today is due to people like Bacon and Galilei, who were brave enough to step out from the shadows of old thoughts in order to find the kingdom of knowledge that today’s civilization is built upon. These men knew that knowledge and understanding are things to fight for;more vital to a man,and more beneficial to mankind, some might say, than all the money in the world.

“All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered;the point is to discover them.”—Galileo Galilei (1564~1642)

  4.In Bacon and Galileo’s times,people would prefer to ________.

5.In this passage Bacon and Galileo are mentioned as examples for________.

  A.their great achievements in science

B.their ambition to doubt great ancestors

C.their revolutionary way of acquiring knowledge

The effects of inflation or rapidly rising prices in one area may encourage a purchaser to borrow money to avoid higher costs in the future.People who are successful at saving will often want to make their money work even harder and increase their income through successful investments.

Purchasing housing has been shown to be good investments. So many Chinese people purchased houses in the early 2000s because rapid price increases made them look like a good investment.

Some people have managed to combine their hobbies and special interests with their investments. However, investing in such things as artworks, rare cars and number plates, rare wines, first edition books, fossils, stamps and gems all cause particular problems. It requires professional knowledge and good luck if it is to become an investment rather than an expensive hobby.

Shares (股票) can also provide an income stream. They offer a return on the investment through a dividend (红利) paid to the share owner. The dividend is a share in the profits of the business divided amongst the shareholders. As well as providing a regular income, shares can be sold to add to holders’ income on a lump sum (一次性).The dividend and increased value of share price growth (also known as capital growth),are the two main reasons people purchase shares. However, share prices can also fall and investors can lose money.

Managed funds are provided by most financial institutions. These are actually a group of investments that the brokers (the financial institution representative) buy. They provide five investment alternatives:cash, fixed interest,Chinese shares, overseas shares and property trusts. They spread the risk over different investments to ensure a better return. For example, property management funds choose a selection of properties to invest in and the rent on these properties provides an income, which is passed on to investors.

However,it is important when borrowing to carefully consider what deposit (押金) can be paid and what the actual rate of interest that has to be paid is.It is essential not to have an unnecessary debt burden.

The choice of how much money to borrow and from which organization to borrow can also be as important as the choice of item itself.Interest rates and the term of a loan can vary greatly,so it pays to shop around.

MEXICO CITY-The 16th United Nations Climate Change

  Conference (COP16)

was held in Cancun,a tourist city on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, from Nov.29 to Dec.10,2010 to continue to search solutions to the climate problem.

The parties have met annually since 1995 in Conferences of the Parties (COP) to evaluate progress in dealing with climate change. The Cancun was another important conference to move forward the “Bali Road Map” negotiations after the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen last year, which failed to reach a legally binding treaty (有约束力的条约) for the years beyond 2012.

Four UN climate talks had been held since Copenhagen conference, three in German city Bonn and one in China’s Tianjin, with some progress having been made in climate payments and forest protection.

The first round of United Nations climate change talks in Bonn lasted from April 9 to 12,with different countries agreeing to hold two more meetings in 2010.The talks were delayed due to differences between developing and developed countries on how to deal with the final results of the Copenhagen conference.

The second round of talks was held from May 31 to June 11 with “imbalance” becoming the key word. The disagreement could not cover some progress made during the past 12 days, even it was just a little. The progress was made in adding more details of how a system can work in practice, including climate funds and transfer of clean technologies.

The third round of UN climate talks held from Aug.2 to 6.Representatives discussed a draft text and advanced slowly on emission (排放) cuts promises and other issues.

The fourth round of talks was held in China’s Tianjin,as the parties have made some progress in climate payments and forest protection, each side“is very close” to agreeing with each other to build a climate fund.

Before the COP 16,experts said that optimism would remain for significant progress in negotiations on the “Bali Road Map,” though an international community would agree it might be difficult to achieve a legally binding agreement.

The conference gathered the participants from governments, businesses, nongovernmental organizations and research institutions from 180 countries. It is the penultimate opportunity for parties to reach a legally binding treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol (京都议定书) which will be no longer valid in 2012.

1.According to the passage, the second round of talks lasting from May 31 to June 11________.

  A.was a total failure

  B.got limited progress

  C.reached a legally binding treaty

D.was the most successful round of talks

A.Different sides set up a climate fund.

B.Different countries signed a legally binding treaty.

C.Different countries agreed to hold two more meetings in 2010.

D.Different sides seem very likely to agree to set up climate fund.

3.What does the underlined word “penultimate” in the last paragraph mean?

  A.The second.

  B.The last.

  C.The last but one.

  D.The last but two.

4.It can be inferred from the passage that________.

A.it might be difficult for the UN to reach an agreement on certain issues

Over the past summer, many young Chinese students reportedly downloaded and watched online courses given by top universities from the US and UK.Many people welcome this as a new form of acquiring knowledge, while some see this as an opportunity to learn from these top-ranked universities without paying the high fee.

By talking to some Chinese friends who enjoyed those online courses,I find that what they like about those courses is largely the free, interactive and humorous atmosphere in American university classes. Some Chinese professors, especially young ones, have already taken steps to reform course structure, provide more class discussion and adopt various evaluations rather than one final examination to determine students’ grades.

However, the Chinese tradition of staying serious in the classroom remains the same.In some cases, the teacher just reads ont the text directly from the textbook for the whole class period.

I cannot agree more with those who attend these free online courses. Online courses offered by western universities will probably change the tradition of how the Chinese students learn things.

However, these free courses cannot offer everything taught by those western universities.Young Chinese can learn the methods and subjects, but there will always be a gap between watching it online and experiencing it in person.

From my experience studying in the US,the most valuable lessons I have learned were not in class. My best source of learning was the motivation and encouragement from my classmates and friends-questioning and arguing about theories and ideas.Or it was through my professor’s help during the one-on-one office hours.

The most important experiences cannot be copied by watching a course through the computer screen.

A latest report from the Community College Research Center at Columbia University suggests it isn’t necessarily the online method that helps students learn more.In fact,it is the qualitative (质量的) values that matter-the learning environment, the interactive atmosphere, and the instruction and motivation from professors and classmates. These values are immeasurable and they are lost in translation with those digital courses.

Online courses are only a new method of learning and consumption;the missing ingredient (要素) from these online courses—the qualitative values of learning—still lie within the university itself.

5.The author finds that online courses offered by western universities are popular among Chinese students mainly because of________.

  A.their qualitative values of evaluation

  B.the personal experiences

C.the good reputation of the universities

  D.the good atmosphere of learning

6.According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.Qualitative values of learning are well reflected in the online courses.

B.A latest report from Columbia University shows that traditional classroom teaching plays no role in helping students.

C.The author disagrees with the idea that online courses will benefit the Chinese students.

D.Western universities often adopt diverse and flexible teaching methods.

7.What will be the best title of the passage?

A.Online courses offer a lesson in western teaching methods

B.Online courses brings an end to traditional courses in China

C.Online courses are a short cut to experience life in foreign countries

D.Online courses provide an opportunity for western students to learn about China

China’s Tianhe-1 has a computing speed of 2,507 trillion (万亿) calculations a second, which makes it the fastest computer in the world. It is also 40 percent faster than the world’s second fastest supercomputer,Cray XT5 Jaguar,in the US,kept at a national laboratory in Tennessee, according to the New York Times.Jack Dongarra,a University of Tennessee computer scientist, told NYT that the Chinese supercomputer is faster than the existing Number One machine.

Building the fastest supercomputer has become a source of national pride,as these machines are valued for their ability to solve problems in areas like defense, energy and science. These problems are related to national interests.Supercomputing technology is also found in business.Oil and gas companies use supercomputers to find oil and gas.

Obviously, research centers with large supercomputers attract top scientific talents. This adds extra importance to the machines-they’re more than just huge computers.

China’s new supercomputer will be used to speed up greatly scientific calculations, such as hurricane and tsunami modeling, cancer research, car design and even studying stars.

In 2008,two US scientists put together a step-by-step guide on how to build a supercomputer using PlayStation 3 video-game consoles (控制台).Modern supercomputers are built by combining thousands of small computer servers (服务器) and using software to turn them into one large computer. Really, any organization with enough material and technology can create a fast machine.

The Chinese system follows that model by linking thousands upon thousands of computer servers. But the secret behind the system-and the technological achievement-is China’s own networking technology.“That technology was built by them,” Dongarra said.“They are taking supercomputing very seriously and using a lot of time and money.”

“China is still a developing country,” said Sha Chaoqun, manager at Dawning Company which is the leading supercomputer maker in China.“Maybe one day,China’s total computing power can be greater than that of the US,but there is still a long way to go before we get there.”

Schools of robotic fish could be sent into the Thames to produce a 3D pollution map of the river.

Researchers at the University of Essex in Colchester are working on the robotic fish as part of £2.5 million EU-funded project to find new ways of monitoring water waste.

Each fish will be about 50cm long,15cm high and 12cm wide. They will be packed with pollution sensors (传感器) that can electronically “smell” harmful chemicals in the water.

Scientists have developed“swarm(群)intelligence techniques”which allow the fish to work as a team without humans.

The robotic fish will communicate with each other using wi-fi as they seek out areas of pollution. They work out where they are with inbuilt GPS systems and artificial intelligence software will enable them to move without the need for a human operator:they will only warn staff if areas of pollution are found.

A fish that finds pollution sends the data of the location to others.

“Each school will contain five fish, and they will constantly monitor for pollutants,”said Dr.Dongbing Gu,who is leading the research.

“When they find something, they will send a message to the rest of the school, who will then gather in the area to take readings.”

The fish move their bodies up and down like waves-driven by motors-and use fins and a tail to change direction. It is hoped they will travel at speeds of up to half a metre per second.

Working models could be available within 18 months.Different sensors will be fitted to hunt for different pollutants (污染物).The data could be used to build a “real time” 3D map of areas of pollution in the water, allowing operators to determine the best way to clean up the area.

The fish will initially be used in ports to monitor leaks from large ships, but Dr.Gu said the same system could be used in the Thames.Researchers hope the robotic fish will be able to spend up to 24 hours in the water before needing to be recharged.

1.The purpose of the robotic fish project is to________.

A.find out whether inbuilt GPS systems are useful

B.find new ways to monitor water waste

C.prove that robotic fish can be sent into the Thames

D.test the speed of the robotic fish

2.Robotic fish can find harmful pollutants by using____________________________.

  A.GPS systems

  B.a 3D pollution map

  C.pollution sensors

  D.fins and a tail

3.According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.The robotic fish have been used in ports as well as in the Thames.

B.It takes 24 hours for robotic fish to be recharged.

C.The robotic fish can work as team without humans.

D.The robotic fish can not change direction in water.

4.The passage mainly tells us about________.

A.the robotic fish to smell out pollutants

  B.a £2.5 million EU-funded project

  C.researchers working on robotic fish

D.a 3D pollution map of the Thames

Throw the bottles and boxes of drugs out of your house.A new theory suggests that medicine could be bad for your health, which should at least come as good news to people who cannot afford to buy expensive medicine. This new theory argues that healing is at our fingertips:we can be healthy by doing Yoga on a regular basis.

Supporters of medical treatment argue that medicine should be trusted since it is effective and scientifically proven. They say that there is no need for spiritual methods such as Yoga. These waste our time, something which is quite precious in our material world. There is medicine that can kill our pain,X-rays that show us our bones or MRI that scans our brain for tumors (肿瘤).

We must admit that these methods are very effective in the examples that they provide. However, there are some “everyday complaints” such as back pains, headaches, insomnia, which are treated currently with medicine. When you have a headache, you take an Aspirin;when you cannot sleep, you take Xanax without thinking of the side effects of these. When you use these pills for a long period, you become addicted to them;you cannot sleep without them.We pay huge amounts of money and become addicted instead of getting better. How about a safer and more economical way of healing? When doing Yoga, you do not need anything except your energy so it is very economical. Its popularity has spread particularly throughout America and Western Europe. In quantum (量子) physics, energy is recognized as the fundamental substance (物质) which the universe consists of.Yoga depends on the energy within our bodies. It is a simple and effective way of restoring the energy flow. There are no side effects and it is scientifically explained.

Opponents of alternative healing methods also claim that serious illnesses such as HIV/AIDS and cancer cannot be treated without drugs. They think so because these patients spend the rest of their lives in the hospital taking medicine. How can Yoga make these people healthy again? It is very unfortunate that these patients have to live in the hospital losing their hair because of chemotherapy (化疗),losing weight because of the side effects of the medicine they take.Actually,it is common knowledge that except for when the cancer is recognized at an early stage, drugs also cannot treat AIDS or cancer. Most of the medicines these patients use are to ease their pain and their sufferings.Instead of drugs which are expensive and have many side effects, you can use your energy to overcome the hardships of life, find an emotional balance, leave the stress of everyday life and let go of the everyday worries. We should definitely start learning Yoga and avoid illnesses before it is too late.
