Many of the world抯 cities are getting bigger. Tokyo, the capital of Japan now has over twelve million people. Think of it, twelve million people all needing food, water, a place to live in and fresh air. Of course Tokyo is not the only city with such a tlarge population. There are seventy cities in the world with more than eight million people. London is one of them. But London is no longer getting bigger. Today fewer people live in the center of the city and more people live outside. Then they travel to work in the city. There are thousands of cars, buses, trucks, and motorbikes in the city. The air in the city is made very dirty. And they spend a lot of time traveling from home to work, and from work to home. They must pay much money for the houses they live in.

  第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

My husband and I had just opened up a pet sitting business earlier that year. Our customers had slowly risen from three to thirty a month. We were busy through those hot summer months, driving between visits. Our services were strictly held at the pet owner’s home. It was almost too busy for the two of us, but we were making good money!

We asked pet owners new to our services to phone two weeks ahead so we had enough time to meet the owners and pets at their homes and make any following meetings before the owner leaves.

One day, we decided to take on a new customer just two days before they would leave. We met the family, filled in a form, and spent some time with their dog, Hercules. He playfully jumped on us and touched our hands and arms using his tongue. The family laughed as he did this, showing us that he was very loving.

Two days later I appeared at the house, alone. I came up to Hercules and said hello happily. I filled up his water bowl and cleaned any messes he made. Meanwhile, he was so lovely sitting beside. I thought this would be the good picture to send to the owners, a usual service. After the light and “click” sound went off, Hercules rushed at me. I didn’t know what had just happened until I noticed the drops of blood. I ran out and did the only thing — calling my husband.

Then I went to neighbors for help. My husband arrived after ten minutes. The helpful neighbor and my husband led Hercules back into his pen (圈). Then my husband and I took off to the hospital.

I must have looked like I was shot when I walked into the hospital. The nurses quickly moved me to a room. I asked the doctor in a weak but playful manner, “Am I going to die?” He replied, “Finally.”

Different from what people think though, the Keel-billed Toucan is not very good at flying and does most of its moving about by jumping between the tree branches.

A female Keel-billed Toucan lays between 1 and 5 eggs in the hole of a tree, which usually hatch within a few weeks. Sweat stains are visible on any color clothing, especially on the white ones. In order to help you deal with that annoying problem, “Cleaners Bermondsey” provides the following cleaning tips on how to get rid of sweat stains. The good thing is that you can use them for stains removal as well.

  HYDROGEN PEROXIDE

Take a hydrogen peroxide(过氧化氢) that is either 2 or 3 percent solution. Pour a few teaspoons onto the stained area of white clothing only. Then rub it into the area well and let it sit for about half an hour. After that, launder as usual. Do not do this to colored clothes, because it will damage the color.

  BORIC ACID

A great cleaning solution for any color fabric is 20 Mule Team Borax. Prepare a paste with the boric acid(硼酸) and water and apply it to the stained area. Gently rub it into and leave it like that for about half an hour. Scrub the area with a brush or sponge and launder as usual.

  WHITE VINEGAR

Apply some vinegar onto the stain and gently rub it into. Let it sit for about half an hour and then clean as you usually do.

  LEMON JUICE

Alternatively, you can squeeze fresh lemon juice onto the stain or use the bottled lemon juice. If you choose to use that approach, gently rub the lemon juice into the stain, allow it to sit for about half an hour. Then clean as normal. You can also pour the lemon juice onto it and hang the shirt in the sun. The sun may help to get the stain out and the acid in the lemon juice helps.

  ASPIRIN

Prepare a paste from crushed aspirin tablets dissolved (溶解) in water. Then apply it to the stained area. Gently rub it into, and let it sit on the shirt for about half an hour.

  63. Which of the following is TRUE of the cleaning tips?

  A. The longer aspirin stays on the stain, the better.

  B. Boric acid is likely to damage color fabric.

  C. White vinegar helps get the stain out in the sun.

  D. 20 Mule Team Borax could be used on colored clothes.

  64. When you use hydrogen peroxide, what calls for special attention is that ________.

  A. you should allow it to sit for about half an hour

  B. you should clean as you usually do in the end

  C. you shouldn’t use it on colored clothes

  D. you should rub it into the stained area gently

  65. When your water supply is cut off, you can use ________ to clean the sweat stain.

  A. boric acid B. white vinegar

  C. lemon juice D. aspirin

  66. What would be the best title of the passage?

  A. Annoying Problems! B. Hateful Sweat Stains!

  C. Fantastic Tablets! D. Buy these Chemicals!

  答案与解析

  【解题导语】

  洗不掉的汗渍非常讨厌吧?本文为你提供了几个去除汗渍的方法。

  63.答案 D

解析 根据BORIC ACID部分中的“A great cleaning solution for any color fabric is 20 Mule Team Borax.”可知,20 Mule Team Borax可用于彩色衣物。

  64.答案 C

解析 根据HYDROGEN PEROXIDE中的“Do not do this to colored clothes, because it will damage the color.”可知,过氧化氢不能用来清理彩色衣物上的汗渍,因为它会破坏衣物的颜色。

  65.答案 C

解析 根据LEMON JUICE部分中的“You can also pour the lemon juice onto it and hang the shirt in the sun. The sun may help to get the stain out and the acid in the lemon juice helps.”

I prefer Lynne Truss’s phraseology: I am a grammar “stickler”. And, like Truss — author of Eats, Shoots & Leaves — I have a “zero tolerance” approach to grammar mistakes that make people look stupid.

Now, Truss and I disagree on what it means to have “zero tolerance”. She thinks that people who mix up basic grammar “deserve to be struck by lightning, hacked up on the spot and buried in an unmarked grave”, while I just think they deserve to be passed over for a job — even if they are otherwise qualified for the position.

Everyone who applies for a position at either of my companies, iFixit or Dozuki, takes a compulsory grammar test. If job hopefuls can’t distinguish between “to” and “too”, their applications go into the bin.

Of course, we write for a living. iFixit.com is the world’s largest online repair manual (指南), and Dozuki helps companies write their own technical documentation, like paperless work instructions and step-by-step user manuals. So, it makes sense that we’ve made a strong strike against grammar errors.

But grammar is relevant for all companies. Yes, language is constantly changing, but that doesn’t make grammar unimportant. Good grammar is credibility, especially on the Internet. And, for better or worse, people judge you if you can’t tell the difference between “their”“there” and “they’re”.

Good grammar makes good business sense — and not just when it comes to hiring writers. Writing isn’t in the official job description of most people in our office. Still, we give our grammar test to everybody, including our salespeople, our operations staff, and our programmers.

Grammar signifies more than just a person’s ability to remember high school English. I’ve found that people who make fewer mistakes on a grammar test also make fewer mistakes when they are doing something completely unrelated to writing — like stocking shelves or labeling parts. It is the same with programmers. Applicants who don’t think writing is important are likely to think lots of other things also aren’t important.

  67. The author agrees with Lynne Truss on that ________.

  A. grammar mistakes can’t be tolerant

  B. books on grammar make people stupid

  C. people need to learn basic grammar

  D. grammar mistakes are absolutely unavoidable

  68. What’s the author’s “zero tolerance” approach to these job seekers who mix up basic grammar?

  A. They should be left out for a job.

  B. They have to correct their mistakes.

  C. They aren’t qualified for their jobs.

  D. They must be severely punished.

  69. Which of the following is TRUE of iFixit and Dozuki?

  A. Only one of them has a compulsory grammar test.

  B. They are companies where one learns grammar.

  C. Grammar is quite important for their existence.

  D. They depend on grammar correction for a living.

  70. What can we learn from the text?

  A. Companies giving grammar tests may have no good business sense.

  B. Grammar becomes unimportant as language is constantly changing.

  C. A “zero tolerance” approach to grammar errors might seem a little unfair.

  D. People who pay attention to writing may pay attention to other things.

  Good morning, everyone!

I’m honored to have the chance to make a speech here.

Recently I’ve found some of our classmates often stay up late into the night to do their homework and go on studying in the classroom at noon, while in class they often fall asleep, failing to listen to the teachers’ lectures. Even worse, in the morning they can’t tear themselves away from the bed as they are too tired to get up, so they usually rush out of the dormitory at the last minute without having their breakfast.

As is known to all, attending classes is the most effective and important way for us students to take in knowledge. Without enough rest one can’t concentrate on what the teachers say. All work with no play makes Jack a dull boy. And a nutritious breakfast is to a teenager what gasoline is to an engine. Only when we schedule our time properly for both our study and rest can we make great progress in our study and keep healthy as well.

  That’s all, thanks for listening.
