The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on the earth, is of great importance to African ecosystem. Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big planteater,it largely shapes the forestandsavanna (大草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting_the_terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat.

It is the elephant's great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and underbushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of

the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a

  variety of other planteaters.

Take the rainforests for example. In their natural

state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight

and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By

pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make

open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest

floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for

large hoofed planteaters to move around and for small

planteaters to get their food as well.

What worries scientists now is that the African

elephant has become an endangered species. If the

elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals

will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna,

greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.

36.What is the passage mainly about?

  A.Disappearance of African elephants.

  B.Forests and savannas as

  habitats for African

  elephants.

C.The effect of African elephants' search for food.

D.The eating habit of African elephants.

  most probably mean?

  A.Fixing the time.

  B.Worsening the state.

  C.Improving the quality.

  D.Deciding the conditions.

根据上半句和下文“existence for millions of other animals”可知答案。

38.What do we know about the open spaces in the passage?

A.They result from the destruction of rainforests.

B.They provide food mainly for African elephants.

C.They are home to many endangered animals.

D.They are attractive to planteating animals of

  different kinds.

39.According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.The African elephant is the largest animal on the

  earth.

B.African elephants have 300 pounds of plants every

  day,including small trees and underbushes.

C.The African elephant is in a way the builder of the

  environment like other land animals.

D.If the African elephant disappears, the whole

  ecosystem won't be affected.

40.The passage is developed mainly by ________.

A.showing the effect and then explaining the causes

  B.pointing out similarities and differences

C.describing the changes in space order

  D.giving examples

Jeffrey Bezos, the founder, president and chairman of the board of Amazon. com, was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His mother's ancestors were early settlers in Texas, and over the generations had acquired a 25,000 acre farm at Cotulla. Jeffrey spent most summers of his youth working with his grandfather on their farm.

  Jeffrey

  showed

  intense

  and

  varied

scientific interests at an early age. He set up an electric alarm to keep his younger sisters and brothers out of his room and changed his parents'

garage into a laboratory for his science projects.

After he graduated from Princeton University with a degree in computer science and electrical engineering, Jeffrey Bezos found employment on Wall Street, where computer science was increasingly in demand to study market trends. He rose quickly, becoming a senior vice president, and looked forward to a bright career in finance, when he made a discovery that changed his life, and the course of business history.

In 1994, there was still no Internet commerce to speak of. One day that spring, Jeffrey Bezos observed that Internet usage was increasing by 2,300 percent a year. He

  saw

  an

  opportunity

  for

  a

  new

  circle

  of commerce, and

  immediately

  began

  considering

  the possibilities.

Bezos founded Amazon. com in 1994, setting up the original company in his garage. The company was called Amazon for the seemingly endless South American river with its numberless branches. It started as an online bookstore but soon diversified (多样化) to all kinds of products. His work with Amazon eventually led him to become one of the most excellent dotcom entrepreneurs (企业家). He was named Time magazine's Person of the Year in 1999. In 2008, he was selected by U.S. News & World Report as one of America' s Best Leaders.Bezos' s Amazon has become “the Earth's biggest anything store”. Amazon. com is now called “one of the smartest strategies in business history”.

Today, Jeffrey Bezos lives north of Seattle and is increasingly concerned with charity (慈善) activities. “Giving away money takes as much attention as building a successful company,” he has said.

Stephen Hawking(January,8th 1942—)was born on the 300th anniversary of Galileo's death. He has come to be thought of as the greatest mind in physics since Albert Einstein.

Hawking grew up outside London in an educated family. His father was a physician and specialist in tropical diseases;his mother was active in the Liberal Party. From early on he wanted to study science. He became increasingly skilled in mathematics and in 1958 he and some friends built a simple computer that actually worked. In 1959 he won a scholarship to Oxford University. In 1962 he got his degree with honors and went to Cambridge University to gain a PhD in cosmology (宇宙论). There he became crazy about black holes (first proposed by Robert Oppenheimer). After receiving his PhD,he stayed at Cambridge, becoming known even in his 20s for his pioneering ideas and use of Einstein's formulas, as well as his questioning of older, established physicists.

In 1968 he joined the staff of the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge and began to study black holes. Soon afterwards he made an astonishing discovery. Hawking suggested that under certain conditions, a black hole could give out subatomic particles (颗粒). That is now known as Hawking Radiation. He continued working on the theory of the origin of the universe.

At the age of 32, he received the Albert Einstein Award. And in 1979, he was appointed Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge, the most famous academic chair in the world. Since its creation 330 years ago, 17 individuals have held the chair, like Sir Isaac Newton, Charles Babbage and Robert Woodhouse. There he began to question the big bang theory, which by then most had been accepted.

In 1988 Hawking wrote A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes, explaining the evolution (发展)of his thinking about the cosmos for a general audience. It became a longstanding bestseller and established his reputation as an accessible genius. He wrote other popular articles and appeared in movies and television. He remains extremely busy, his work hardly slowed by Lou Gehrig's disease(a disease that affects muscle control)for which he uses a wheelchair and speaks through a computer and voice synthesizer (合成器).

  Dear Sir,

Just over six months ago, I saw an advertisement in the morning mail for a set of the complete works of William Shakespeare. Your company, Cosmo Books Ltd., offered this set (eight books of plays and two books of poetry) at what was claimed to be a reasonable price—fifteen pounds and fifty pence, including postage and packing. I had wanted a set of Shakespeare's plays and poems for some time, and these books, in red imitation leather, looked particularly attractive. So I sent for them.

Two weeks later, the books arrived, together with a set of the complete works of Charles Dickens which I had not ordered. So I returned Dickens' books to you, with a cheque for fifteen pounds and fifty pence for the works of Shakespeare. Two more weeks passed. Then there arrived on my doorstep a second set of the works of Shakespeare, the same set of novels by Dickens and a sixbook set of the plays of Moliere, in French. Since I do not read French, these were of no use to me at all. However, I could not afford to post all these books back to you, so I wrote to you at the end of August of last year, instructing you to come and collect all the books that I did not want, and asking you not to send any other books until further notice.

You did not reply to that letter. Instead, you sent me a bill for fortytwo pounds, and a set of the plays of Schiller, in German. Since then, a new set of books has arrived every two weeks, the works of Goethe, the poems of Milton, the plays of Strindberg; I hardly know what I have. The books are still all in their boxes, in the garage, and my car has to stand in the rain outside.

I have no room for any more books, and even if I read from now until Judgment Day, I would not finish reading all the books that you have sent me.

Please send no more books, send no more bills, send no more annoying letters demanding payment. Just send one large lorry and take all the books away, leaving me only the set of the complete works of Shakespeare for which I have paid.

  Yours faithfully,

  Simon Walker

53.Mr. Walker answered the advertisement because ________.

A.he claimed that the books were being offered at a remarkable price

B.he wanted the set of Shakespeare's works which was a good bargain

C.he had ordered the set and had been waiting for it to come for some time

D.the set he already had was not attractive

根据第一段中的“to be a reasonable price—fifteen pounds and fifty pence, including postage and packing”以及下一句的内容可知,作者之所以回复广告是因为作者想要这套莎士比亚的作品,而且价格非常公道。

54.It can be inferred that ________.

A.Cosmo Books Ltd. has sent bills for books that it has not sent

B.several sets of books have been sent to Mr. Walker free of charge

C.Mr. Walker hasn't received the books that he ordered

根据第二段中的“so I returned Dickens' books to you”以及该段最后一句的内容可推知,Mr.

55.The tone of the letter is that of ________.

  A.bitterness

  B.respect

  C.humor

  D.annoyance

Newspapers in Britain can be divided into “the quality press” (more serious newspapers) and “the popular press”. Quality newspapers have home and international news, and sports and cultural events. They also carry financial reports, travel news and book and film reviews.

Popular newspapers are also known as “tabloids”. They have large headlines, a lot of big photographs and concentrate on news and events about famous people, and news about the British royal family.

The Times is the most famous of the quality newspapers. It began in 1785. It is read by important people such as politicians, lawyers and businessmen. The Sun, founded in 1964, is the most successful of the popular newspapers. Around four million people read it every day and it sells more than any other daily newspaper.

In the United States, newspapers usually have the name of the city where they are produced (for example, The New York Times). You can buy the bigger ones all over the country. The US also has a lot of tabloid newspapers, such as The New York Daily News, which are similar to British tabloids.
