When Josephine Cooper was growing up, she learned the importance of charity from her parents. Although they made a modest living for their family of 10, they insisted on sharing with those less fortunate.

Half a century later, Mrs Cooper became a beloved volunteer at the San Diego Food Bank, where she devoted herself to helping others. She organized and ran a distribution center from a church,

helping it become the organization's largest emergency food distribution center in San Diego. She was one of 25 outstanding senior volunteers in the nation selected and invited Washington D.C. to receive the award.

“She was the main person who helped us make that program grow,” said Mike Doody, former director of the Food Bank. “She had a way of getting people to work together and to work hard. She was determined and stubborn, but in a good way. She had a good heart.” People knew her as “Grandma” because of her selflessness and her devotion to helping hungry children and families. “She reminded people of their Grandma.” Doody said.

As a widow with a young child in 1979, Mrs Cooper was helped through a difficult financial time when the Food Bank provided her with groceries. “She devoted her life to giving back,” said her daughter, Monica Cooper. It wasn't unusual for a local church to call Mrs Cooper to ask her to aid a needy family. “She would give people food out of her cupboard. Sometimes we would cook a meal for a family living out of their car,” Cooper said.

Although Mrs Cooper was honored to receive the national award for her volunteer work, she said being able to help others was her reward. She died of liver disease and kidney failure, aged 93.

  A.offering help

  B.donating money

  C.providing services

37.The San Diego Food Bank is meant to ________.

A.distribute food in case of emergency

  B.help hungry children and families

  C.give basic firstaid treatment

  D.train some senior volunteers

根据第二段中的“where she devoted herself to helping others... largest emergency food distribution center”可知答案为B。

38.Which of the following is true of Mrs Cooper?

A.She died at an early age.

  B.She refused the national award.

  C.She was kind and devoted.

D.She was not easy to get along with.

The writings of Shakespeare are today little read by young people in Britain. His young readership is limited to those who choose to study literature at university.

Shakespeare's work, together with most other classics, is seen as remote, and written in a 400yearold version of English that is about as inviting as toothache.

Still, in British schools, it is compulsory to study the bard (诗人), and when something is made compulsory, usually the result is boredom, resentment (憎恨) or both.

This was my experience of the classics at school. But when I reached my late teenage years, I had a change of heart. Like every other young person since the dawn of time, the world confused me. I wanted answers, so I turned to books to find them.

I went on to take a PhD in literature and have taught it in Britain and China. I have never regretted it.

There is something in literature that people want, even if they don't read books. You see this in the popularity of TV and movie adaptations of great works, the recent film version of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice being a_case_in_point. These popular adaptations may help increase people's interest in the classics.

Reading a simplified Romeo and Juliet may perhaps lead to a reading of Shakespeare's actual play.

If that is the case, then I welcome the trend. But do not make the mistake of thinking that it is the same thing.

  Shakespeare is a poet.

His greatness is in his language. Reading someone else's rewriting of his work is like peeling a banana, throwing away the fruit, and eating the skin. Take on the original. It really is worth the effort.

41.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.The language used in classics is no longer in use today.

B.British students usually find compulsory reading dull.

C.Only those studying literature read Shakespeare's works.

D.For British people, Shakespeare's works are no longer classics.

42.According to the passage, the writer ________.

A.has liked literary classics since an early age

B.was forced to read the classics for a PhD

C.turned to literature to seek answers in his teens

D.thinks only people who read books like literature

43.The popularity of TV and movie adaptations of great works may help people ________.

  A.learn more about tradition

  B.get a PhD in literature

C.seek their answers about the world

D.become more interested in the classics

44.The underlined phrase “a case in point” in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to ________.

  A.a great hit

  B.a good example

  C.a movie adaptation

  D.a popular phenomenon

画线前面的一句话“You see this in the popularity of TV and movie adaptations of great works”是作者的观点,后面是进行事例论证。

45.What does the writer intend to tell us in the last paragraph?

A.The fruit of a banana is more useful than its skin.

B.The rewriting trend does more harm than good.

C.Readers should try to read the original versions.

D.Readers need to learn the language in the classics.

A year ago August, Dave Fuss lost his job driving a truck for a small company in west Michigan. His wife, Gerrie, was still working in the local school cafeteria, but work for Dave was scarce, and the price of everything was rising. The Fusses were at risk of joining the millions of Americans who have lost their homes in recent years. Then Dave and Gerrie received a timely gift—$7,000, a legacy (遗产) from their neighbors Ish and Arlene Hatch who died in an accident.

“It really made a difference when we were going under financially,” says Dave.

But the Fusses weren't the only folks in Alto and the neighboring town of Lowell to receive the unexpected legacy from the Hatches.

Dozens of other families were touched by the Hatches' generosity. In some cases, it was a few thousand dollars; in others, it was more than $ 100,000.

It surprised nearly everyone that the Hatches had so much money, more than $ 3 million—they were an elderly couple who lived in an old house on what was left of the family farm.

Children of the Great Depression, Ish and Arlene were known for their habit of saving.

They liked comparison shopping and would routinely go from store to store, checking prices before making a new purchase.

Through the years, the Hatches paid for local children to attend summer camp when their parents couldn't afford it. “Ish and Arlene never asked if you needed anything,” says their friend Sandy Van Weelden. “They could see things they could do to make you happier, and they would do them.”

Even more extraordinary was that the Hatches' had their farmland distributed. It was the Hatches' wish that their legacy—a legacy of kindness as much as one of dollars and cents—should enrich the whole community and last for generations to come.

Neighbors helping neighbors—that was Ish and Arlene Hatch's story.

D.They helped their neighbors to find jobs.

由文章第二段中的“Dozens of other families were touched by the Hatches' generosity.”

48.Why would the Hatches routinely go from store to store?

A.They decided to open a store.

  B.They wanted to save money.

  C.They couldn't afford expensive things.

D.They wanted to buy gifts for local kids.

由文章第四段中的“They liked comparison shopping and would routinely go from store to store, checking prices before making a new purchase.”

49.According to Sandy Van Weelden, the Hatches were ________.

  A.understanding

  B.optimistic

  C.childlike

  D.curious

故选A。

Maurice Sendak's children's book,Where the Wild Things Are, published

  in

  1963, has

  become

very successful throughout the years and was made into a movie earlier this year.

The book's main character is a boy named Max who gets into trouble with his mother and is sent to bed without any supper. Before long, Max's room magically becomes a forest, and he sails away to a land where monsters live. Max isn't scared, though, and becomes king of the wild things, but after a while, he begins feeling homesick. Max sails back home and his supper is still hot when he arrives at his bedroom.

Many teachers and professors like this story and use it to help children develop creativity and imagination. Melina Davis, an education professor, said she liked that the book contains a couple of pages that have only pictures on them. “This allows children to shape the story themselves,” she said.

The book contains a few of larger words that some parents worry may confuse children, but experts say those words help improve children's reading skills and challenge them.

Davis said the book is well written which helps kids get involved in the story. “The book talks about what all children go through, like ‘I am naughty but my mommy still loves me’,” Davis said.

The book also encourages children to face their fears. “I think it's really good to show that Max is friends with the monsters,” Davis said. “Kids can find out monsters aren't always the things under the bed that are going to scare them. I think this is good because it shows that the children can go to scary places but still have a positive experience.”

Since the book has been successful throughout the years,a movie was recently made and many people were excited to see it. Davis said she thinks the movie will be wonderful but it might be a little scary for younger children. “You don't want bad dreams over a book that's extremely wonderful,” Davis said.
