  Ⅰ.阅读理解

  A

If asked if space exploration should continue, most Americans would give an immediate response either in favor of continuing or in favor of ending space exploration. A common response would be that space exploration is a waste of money. An average American, uneducated on the subject, might believe that the government is wasting billions of dollars on the research that has no value. Someone strange to the subject might say that a space shuttle goes up once in a while and that is about all that happens. Research is ongoing and continues when there are no shuttles being launched.

This also costs the government money.

Does the extreme cost of space exploration make sense?

One argument is that the government is wasting money on the research not being used on Earth. Actually, the money goes to workers and scientists that support National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) missions, and goes to major companies that play important roles in major sectors of the US economy. Boeing is a partner of NASA for aircraft, the same company that makes commercial aircraft for the airline industry.

Another benefit to continuing space exploration is the many technologies it provides. The artificial (人造的) heart resulted from experiments on the space shuttle. The handheld Jaws of Life used to save victims from car accidents resulted from the system used to separate the space shuttle from its booster rockets. Insulation (隔热板) in homes that keeps them warm and energy efficient is based on the technology used to insulate the space shuttle.

There are direct benefits to the economy provided by NASA missions as well as those technologies. These advances are found in food, building materials, medical procedures and the vehicles we drive. While it can be proven that billions of dollars that could be used elsewhere is being spent on space exploration, the benefits it provides outweigh the terrible aspects. As a matter of fact, the money spent helps to improve the quality of our lives.

B.do experiments on the space shuttle

C.keep houses warm and energy efficient

4.What would be the best title for the text?

It is a live celebration of the lasting power of letter writing!

Letters Live, which started in December 2016, was held at the Freemasons' Hall in London from March 10 to 15. The show invited various great performers who read remarkable letters that had been written around the world over the centuries.

“Bringing letters alive through outstanding performances is one of the most powerful ways in which the joy and pain and humor and tragedy of being human can be shared,” Jamie Byng, managing director of Canongate Books publishing firm, told the Nowness video channel.

British actor Benedict Cumberbatch agreed. “Letters are windows into the love, beauty, pain and humor of their creators and receivers,” he told The Guardian. “Letters Live makes us stop and imagine the lives behind the letters read and where they came from. It's a privilege to read this most ancient of communications live to an audience.”

This year, the movie Sherlock star treated the audience by playing the part of a 17year Tom Hanks. He put on the young actor's voice when he read his letter to the Hollywood director George Roy Hill, a letter that urged Hill to “discover” him. The letter revealed that twotime Oscar winner Hanks' teenage dream was not to “be a bigtime Hollywood superstar” but to one day own a Porsche car and call his favorite US actor Robert Redford his nickname “Bob”.

Other famous faces at the event included Carey Mulligan, who played a fictional laundry worker, a female activist fighting for women's rights in the 2015 movie Suffragette. The British actress once again played the role of a suffragette, when she read a very enthusiastic letter demanding the vote for women.

The suffragette sent a precious 1913 note to The Daily Telegraph newspaper.

“Everyone seems to agree upon the necessity of putting a stop to Suffragist anger, but no one seems certain how to do so,” Mulligan read out. “There are two, and only two, ways in which this can be done. Both will be effectual. One, kill every woman in the UK. Two, give women the vote.”

5.What was Cumberbatch's attitude towards Jamie Byng's opinion?

  A.Doubtful. B.Positive.

(2017·山东潍坊高三统一考试)“There's a mother in PICU (儿童重症监护病房) who wants to talk about a kit she received,” the nurse told me. “Something about it made her cry.”

I've been a childlife specialist at the Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital since 2000.

I help families understand diagnoses and treatment plans and manage the ups and downs that come with caring for a sick child. Tough talks with parents are part of the job, which still makes me feel nervous.

The kits the nurse was talking about were something I had recently

  introduced

  to

  the

  hospital:

  Comfort

  Kits

from Guideposts. They were supposed to make a child's experience here easier, not upsetting.

When I came across the kits at a conference, I fell in love with them. A treasure box of items designed not only to entertain kids,

but to comfort and inspire them. There's a coloring book, a stress ball, a CD of relaxing music, a hairy star named Sparkle, a journal and much more.

I really believed these kits would help kids. I wished I hadn't been mistaken.

At the patient's room in PICU I saw a little girl, sleeping soundly surrounded by tubes and machines. My eyes met her mother's. The kit was open on her lap and tears were running down her cheeks.

“I'm Shannon. I manage the Child Life Department,” I said. “I'm sorry if the kit upset you. It's a new item ...”

The mother shook her head. “This has been one of the worst days of my life. I felt so scared and alone. Then I was handed this box. I know it's for my daughter, but it's just the comfort I needed. I wanted to say thankyou.”

With that I knew Comfort Kits belonged here. We've been using them for almost three years now. Each child who's admitted to the hospital receives one. Every day I see kids coloring, journaling, playing with Sparkle.

But as this mom showed me Comfort Kits aren't just for kids. The hope they bring, which_can_be_in_short_supply_in_hospitals_sometimes,_is felt by the whole family.

9.The author introduced Comfort Kits to the hospital to ________.

  A.relax nurses

  B.benefit sick kids

  D.cure kids of diseases

10.Why was the girl's mother crying?

  A.She was moved to tears.

  B.She felt alone and scared.

Modern humans have a hard time controlling their desire to eat. Often you eat not because you are hungry, but because you are affected by many other things. How much

you eat is strongly affected by how much those around you eat. People eating alone eat least. People eating with one other person eat 35 percent more than they do at home. People dining in a party of four eat 75 percent more. Eating with overweight friends? You'll eat more. Is your waitress overweight? You'll eat more. A wide variety of food? You'll eat more.

Plates can decide how sweet dessert tastes. If people ate it off a paper plate, they'd say, “This is good.” If they ate it off a fancy silver plate, they would say, “This is the greatest cake I've eaten in my entire life.”

Your knowledge about what makes food good or bad also affects how much you eat. You tend to eat more when you think the food is good, and less when you think it is bad. So Grandma's cookies always taste better than other cookies. “Good food” even has a “health halo (光环) effect”. If we're eating something healthy, we feel that everything in that meal is healthy. Due to this, people often believe that a cheese cake with a salad has fewer calories (卡路里) than the cheese cake alone. That's perhaps also why eating organic (有机的) food might turn you into an annoying guy.

Your brain may use anything that makes you feel good about your own morality to excuse your immoral behaviour.

Food and hunger affect your judgment too. Hungry judges give more serious sentences.

Kids who don't eat breakfast behave worse than kids who eat their breakfast. People who have low blood sugar are more likely than the average person to have trouble concentrating and controlling their unpleasant emotions.

13.What is mentioned as a cause of overeating?

  A.Suffering from great loneliness.

B.Being served by a helpful waitress.

C.Being treated to high quality food.

  D.Eating with many friends.

14.According to the passage, an annoying person may be one who ________.

A.finds any excuse for eating more

B.is crazy about the quality of plates

C.competes with others in making cookies

D.teaches people to stick to morality

15.What would be the best title for the passage?

  A.When Can't We Go on a Diet?

  B.What Affects Eating?

  C.How to Make Good Food

  D.Where to Find Safe Food
