A policeman was questioning 3 blondes who were training to become detectives. To test their skills in recognizing a suspect, he shows the first blonde a picture for5 seconds and then hides it.
“This is your suspect, how would you recognize him?"
The first blonde answers, "That's easy, we'll catch him fast because he only has one eye!" The policeman says, "Well...uh...that's because the picture shows his profile."
Slightly confused by this ridiculous response, he flashes the picture for 5 seconds at the second blonde and asks her, "This is your suspect, how would you recognize him?"
The second blonde giggles, flips her hair and says, "Ha! He'd be too easy to catch because he only has one ear!"
The policeman angrily responds, "What's the matter with you two? Of course only one eye and one ear are SHOWING because it's a picture of his profile!! Is that the best answer you can come up with?"
Extremely frustrated at this point, he shows the picture to the third blonde and in a very testy voice asks "This is your suspect, how would you recognize him?" He quickly adds, "Think hard before giving me a stupid answer."
The blonde looks at the picture intently for a moment and says, "Hmmmm…the suspect wears contact lenses."
The policeman is surprised and speechless because he really doesn't know himself if the suspect wears contacts or not. "Well, that's an interesting answer...wait here for a few minutes while I check his file and I’ll get back to you on that." He leaves the room and goes to his .office, checks the suspect's file in his computer, and comes back with a beaming smile on his face. "Wow!
I can't believe it...it's TRUE! The suspect does in fact wear contact lenses. Good work! How were you able to make such an acute observation?"
"That's easy," the blonde replied. "He can't wear regular glasses because he only has one eye and one ear."

A small piece of fish each day may keep the heart doctor away. That’s the finding of a study of Dutch men in which deaths from heart disease were more than 50 percent lower among those who consumed at least an ounce of salt water fish per day compared to those who never ate fish.
The Dutch research is one of three human studies that give strong scientific support to the long held belief that eating fish can provide health benefits, particularly to the heart.
Heart disease is the number-one killer in the United States, with more than 550,000 deaths occurring from heart attacks each year. But previous research has shown that the level of heart disease is lower in cultures that consume more fish than Americans do. There are fewer heart disease deaths, for example, among the Eskimos of Greenland, who consume about 14 ounces of fish a day, and among the Japanese, whose daily fish consumption averages more than 3 ounces.
For 20 years, the Dutch study followed 852 middle-aged men, 20 percent of whom ate no fish. At the start of the study, average fish consumption was about two-thirds of an ounce each day, with more men eating lean fish than fatty fish.
During the next two decades, 78 of the men died from heart disease. The fewest deaths were among the group who regularly ate fish, even at levels far lower than those of the Japanese or Eskimos. This relationship was true regardless of other factors such as age, high blood pressure, or blood cholesterol(胆固醇)levels.

A chemical important of brain development may play a role in explaining why some people are genetically (由基因决定地) likely to suffer from anxiety and could lead to new treatments, U.S. researchers said.
They said highly anxious rats which were kept had very low levels of a brain chemical called fibroblast growth factor 2 or FGF2, compared with rats that were more relaxed. But when they improved the anxious rats’ living conditions — giving them new toys to explore and a bigger cage to live in — levels of this brain chemical increased and they became less anxious.
“The levels of this brain chemical increased in response to the experiences that the rats were exposed to. It also decreased their anxiety”. Javier Perez of the University of Michigan said in a telephone interview. “It made them behave the same way as the rats that were relaxed”, he said.
In a former study of people who were severely depressed before they died, the team found the gene that makes FGF2 was producing very low levels of the growth factor, which is known primarily for organizing the brain during development and repairing it after injury.
Perez thinks the brain chemical may be a marker for genetic vulnerability (脆弱性) to anxiety and depression. But it can also respond to changes in the environment in a positive way, possibly by preserving new brain cells.
While both the calm and anxious rats produced the same number of new brain cells, these cells were less likely to survive in the high-anxiety rats, the team found. Giving the rats better living conditions or injecting them with FGF2 helped improve cell survival.
“This discovery may pave the way for new, more specific treatments for anxiety that will not be based on sedation(药物镇静), but will instead fight the real cause of the disease,” Dr. Pier Vincenzo Piazza from France said in a statement.

4.阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中, 选出最佳选项。
When we talk about intelligence, we do not mean the ability to get good scores in certain kinds of tests or even the ability to do well in school. By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving, especially in a new or anxious situation. If we want to test intelligence, we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows what to do.
For example, when in a new situation, an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him. He tries to find out all he can, and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it. He probably isn’t sure how it will all work out, but at least he tries. And, if he can’t make things work out right, he doesn’t feel ashamed that he fails; he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook(人生观) on life, special feeling about life, and knows how he fits into it.
If you look at children, you’ll see great difference between what we call “bright” children and “not bright” children. They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amounts of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out more about life — he tries to get in touch with everything around him. But the unintelligent child keeps more to himself and his own dream–world; he seems to have a wall between him and life in general.
61. This passage mainly tells us that intelligence is the ability_________ .
A. to do well in school B. to behave immediately
C. to know what to doD. to deal with life
62. In a new situation, an intelligent person ___________.
A. knows more about what might happen to himB. concentrates on the situationC. is sure of the result he will getD. cares more about himself
63. In the author’s opinion the biggest difference between “bright” children and “not bright” children lies in ____.
A. the amount of intelligenceB. the different situations they faceC. the different attitudes to lifeD. the background of life
64. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. What’s real meaning of intelligence?B. What’s the “bright” children’s behavior?C. What’s a special outlook on life?D. How to live and behave in a new situation?
65. What might the author continue to talk about in the passage that follows? .
A. how to determine what intelligence is B. how an unintelligent person should be taught C. how to judge whether a person is intelligent D. how education should be changed
5.阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中, 选出最佳选项。
Beginning college is exciting: new ideas to explore, new challenges to be met and many decisions to be made. Your future begins here.
However, you will find college life is different from your previous school environment. Many of us can be easily overwhelmed by the details of running a well-balanced life. While some of us may have the know-how,I guess there are more of us who can benefit from learning about the experiences of others who have walked the college halls before you.
The following you may find of use about life on campus.
● Plan well. There are so many new things to do at a new college or university. Give yourself time to make new friends and become familiar with the campus, but don’t forget why you are there. Give some time for social activities and manage your time wisely.
● If you don’t have a “system” for planning your time now (like a day timer,a computer date book),get one. Most of all, don’t depend on your memory.
● Don’t miss the guidelines. The restrictions, rules and regulations of all kinds can usually be found in your student’s handbook. Consider them well-balanced food for thought. What dates are important? What pieces of paper need to be handed in? What can/ can’t you do in your student residence(住处)? Who has the right for what? What do you need to complete to graduate?
●Write the word “STUDY” on the walls of our bedroom and bathroom, and maybe it will help to write it on a piece of paper and stick it on the telephone,TV and the kitchen table. Consider this—you are paying thousands of dollars for your courses. You pay every time you have to repeat or replace a course.
● Build your identity. This is the time for you to decide what to do and what not to do. Take as much time as you need to explore new ideas. Do not be afraid of the beyond. This is learning to make good choices.
56. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To describe the importance of college life. B.To explain why college life is exciting.
C. To offer advice on college life.
D.To persuade you to go to college.

The next generation of smart phone could combine the date from its gyroscopes (陀螺仪) with a built-in compass to allow you to track your indoor movements even without GPS.
Research described it in the international Journal of Innovative Computing and Applications by Shahid Ayub of Lancaster University, and his colleagues there and at HW Communications, suggests that the embedded inertial sensors (嵌入式惯性传感器) in many smart phones have added the facility to be used for localization and tracking applications. The primary benefit of using smart phones is that no additional infrastructure would need to be installed for monitoring personnel movements in a wide variety of situations not least staff, equipment and inventory movements in warehouse facilities, shopping malls and factories. In contrast, other technology being proposed would require new equipment, such as RFID technologies.
However, smart phones do not yet have the ability to pinpoint their location without recourse to the GPS system, which is not accessible indoors and has the added disadvantage of using up battery power very quickly even if it could be used. Inertial navigation only provides the necessary information relative to a specified starting point the team says. This is useful for anyone with a non-GPS smart phone who wishes to track the route they take when walking or jogging if they specify their starting point. The team suggests that pedestrians indoors could be positioned using a combination of the smart phone accelerometer (加速器) and an built-in digital compass, something that will become available in future smart phones.
They have now investigated the potential of three different smart phone placement modes: idle, hand held and listening, which could be used with pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) techniques to allow users to record the path they follow or for various kinds of workplace or other monitoring requirements.
"The technique could be used in underground tube stations, airports , train stations where there is no infrastructure installed for tracking or navigation," Ayub explains, "It can also be used for location-based service applications. In big shopping malls it becomes easier to navigate to a target shop or meeting place, while in large offices and across industry it could be used to track employees and control movements of workers in restricted areas."
67. What is the primary benefit of using smart phones with embedded inertial sensors?
A. They require new equipment, such as RFID technologies.
B. They can track pedestrian movement indoors with GPS.
C. No additional infrastructure would be needed.
D. No additional money would be spent.
68. What can we know from the third paragraph?
A. pedestrians indoors cannot be positioned using GPS.
B. GPS can be used to locate pedestrians indoors.
C. Smart phones with embedded inertial sensors can save a lot of energy.
D. The current GPS system is perfect in many ways.
69. We can learn from the passage that the recent studies of smart phones
.
A. were conducted by Shahid Ayub alone
B. were supported by GPS
C. have no connection with everyday needs
D. can be applied to underground tube stations
70. What would be the best title for the text?
