This is a orphan orangutan named Gatot., who cried during his first day at school.
He then shares a cuddle with Kandi, another small baby.Perhaps because of all the noise he is making, Kandi is not too impressed at the four-month-old's antics.
Happily a young female orangutan, Jamila, hugs Gatot and calms him down.
He was previously picked up in the forest by a man out looking for firewood who heard the sound of crying. The man kept Gatot as a pet for almost two months, feeding him baby milk and raising him like a human. Then the International Animal Rescue were alerted and travelled to the village of Jelai Hulu to collect him.
This tiny baby is almost certainly an orphan because his mother would never have simply abandoned him in the forest. Baby orangutans stay with their mothers until they are seven or eight years old,' said IAR CEO Alan Knight.'It is heartbreaking to see such a young infant without his mother to comfort and protect him.
The good news for Gatot is that he is now in the hands of our expert team and they will give him the best chance of surviving and returning one day to his home in the forest. The great ape will undergo a lengthy rehabilitation process at the centre, learning basic socialisation and climbing skills in school. He will then graduate to forest school to be monitored for the natural behaviours he needs to display in order to fend for himself in the wild.
The first day at any school is tough and it is heartbreaking to see little Gatot seeking comfort from the other orangutans around him.
“However it is among his own kind that he will learn the behaviours and the skills he will need to prepare him for life back in the wild. I've no doubt that he will soon adapt to his new environment and start to grow in confidence,” said Mr Knight.
