In the 5th round of the Sao Paulo state championship, home team Santos beat rival Sao Paulo 2- 0 on Sunday.
The win marked Santos first real test of the year while Sao Paulo failed to present sound soccer.
Elano scored Santos' first goal of the match in the 10th minute off a header. Later, in the 78th, Elano attempted a long range shot that was batted down by ace keeper Rogerio Ceni. However, the ball rolled to Maikon Leite who easily knocked in the loose ball at the mouth of the goal.
Despite the effectiveness of the Santos offense, its defense stood out, shutting out the Sao Paulo attack. The team remains in first place with 13 points, having scored 16 goals in five matches.
In the next round of play, Santos will travel to face Ponte Preta on February 2. On the following day, Sao Paulo will receive Linense. Sao Paulo hope to be able to count on the debut of star veteran striker Rivaldo in the match.
