Andy Roddick, Maria Sharapova crashed out on Sunday's fourth round; while Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Caroline Wozniacki, Francesca Schiavone and Li Na marched into the quarter-finals of Australian Open.
The last American tennis player remained in the tournament, World No. 8 Roddick crashed out of Australian Open, after being defeated by World No. 19 Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka in 3-6 4-6 4-6 in two hours and 22 minutes' fourth round.
Wawrinka played beautifully throughout the match, as he managed 92 percent efficiency on his first serve, and fired 24 aces in the match.
"One of my best, for sure. To beat Roddick in three sets, it's really good for me," Wawrinka told reporters in Melbourne after the match. "Yeah, I'm very happy with all my game. I was playing great and I felt I put a lot of pressure on him."
Sunday's match ends Americans'hope to claim a Grand Slam title, as Roddick was the last American remaining in the tournament.
Since winning a Grand Slam at the 2003 U.S. Open, Roddick is also the last American Grand Slam champion, the longest Grand Slam title drought for the nation.
Defending champion Roger Federer, a 16-time Grand Slam winner, made heavy work of reaching his 27th consecutive grand slam quarter-final with a 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-2 win over Spanish Tommy Robredo in the 145-minute game.
After Sunday's match, the second seed Swiss reached the quarter- final for 27 consecutive majors since his third-round exit at the 2004 French Open, equaling Jimmy Connors'record.
Of his 26 previous quarter-final appearances, Federer has converted 24 into semi-finals, gone on to reach 20 finals and won 14 of them.
However, Federer refused to single out himself and Nadal as the only title threats, as he think the top seeds in the tournament are playing extremely well.
He will face close friend and fellow Wawrinka in next game, which will be the first all-Swiss quarterfinal at a Grand Slam in the Open Era.
Third seed Novak Djokovic beat 14th seed Spanish Nicolas Almagro 6-3 6-4 6-0 to set up a last eight encounter with Thomas Berdych.
In women's draw, top seed Wozniacki defeated unseeded Latvian Anastasija Sevastova in straight sets 6-3 6-4 in the fourth round.
Wozniacki only needs one more win in Melbourne to keep her No.1 ranking.
Meanwhile, 2010 French Open champion Italia's Francesca Schiavone beat 30th seed Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova 4-6 6-1 14-16 in a four hours and 44 minutes fourth round match, breaking the tournament's longest women's single record.?? The pair has broken Barbora Zahlavova Strycova and Regina Kulikova's record on the longest women's Gland Slam match, where Strycova spent four hours and 19 minutes to beat Kulikova in 2010 Australian Open.
The pressure both players felt was incredible, Schiavone later likening every match to a match point.
"It's like every points are match point. You have to keep going. You know that physically you are tired, but the other one, too," She told reporters in Melbourne after the long-lasting match.
Schiavone will face Wozniacki in the quarter-final.
China's top player Li Na defeating the 8th seed Victoria Azarenka in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in the fourth round to breezed into last eight taking one step closer to becoming the first Chinese Grand Slam champion.
The 9th seed Li converted five of the six break points to seal the victory in one hour and 24 minutes, extending her winning streak to nine matches in the new season, which is the best record of all Women's Tennis Association (WTA) players.
It is the second time for Li to take a top eight spot at least in Melbourne after finishing at semi-final stage last year.
"This is a dream for me," Li told reporters in Melbourne, referring to a possible first major title here. "I mean, until now I still just follow the dream. I mean, like last year, I need two more steps. So hopefully this year I can do better."
30th seed German rising star Andrea Petkovic defeated 16th seed Russian Maria Sharapova 6-2 6-3 in one hour and 19 minutes.
Petkovic is the first German to advance to the quarter-final at Australian Open since 1999, and she will next face a very tough match against Li Na.
