Record champions Bayern Munich humiliated struggling Stuttgart 5-3 thanks to three goal by striker Mario Gomez while Leverkusen remained unbeaten streak to 11 matches being held to a 2-2 draw against Freiburg on Sunday.
Bayern needed some time to find into the match against crisis torn Stuttgart. The Bavarians needed 31 minutes to find the gap inside Stuttgart defense to open the scoring.
Striker Mario Gomez utilized an assist by Thomas Mueller to hammer the ball from 13 meter inside left into the roof of the net. It was the tenth goal of this season by Bayern top striker Mario Gomez. Only five minutes later striker Thomas Mueller himself scored the second goal for Bayern.
Mueller netted the cross by Gomez from six meters inside penalty area. Two minutes before break Bayern sealed the triple lead due to Stuttgart's lost defense. Frenchmen midfielder Franck Ribery hammered the ball from 20 meters into top right to smooth the way for a victory before winter break.
After the break Stuttgart displayed a vital sign when striker Martin Harnik slotted a pass from the right side to shorten the score to 1-3.
But Bayern striker Mario Gomez had not enough so that he donated another two goals, one at the 52nd and the second two minutes later to make it 5-1 on the scoreboards.
Stuttgart seemed irrepressible as they frantically pressed to turn things around. Their good actions were rewarded at the 64th minute when again striker Martin Harnik shortened the score to 5-2. Bayern retracted with the lead and staged sloppy actions.
Their laxness was punished with the third goal by Stuttgart. Midfielder Christian Gentner curled a dead ball from the left wing into the goal to make it 3-5. However, Bayern was able to kill the clock with the lead behind even though Stuttgart had a bunch of omitted scoring opportunities. Stuttgart finished a disastrous first half of the season with a disappointing 17th position with only 12 points out of 17 matches. Bayern remained also behind with fifth position and 29 points as well as 14 points distance to first positioned Dortmund.
At the other match, Leverkusen remained unbeaten at their 11th match while Freiburg ends a negative streak with four defeats at Leverkusen due to a two all draw. Leverkusen midfielder Arturo Vidal converted an obvious penalty from the spot to open the scoring at the 16th minute.
Freiburg midfielder Jan Rosenthal and striker Stefan Reisinger turned the match with one goal each to make it 2-1 but, Leverkusen striker Patrick Helmes marked the final goal to equalize the score at the 75th minute. Leverkusen were ranked on third position with 33 points, due to their weaker goal difference compared to second positioned Mainz.
Freiburg finished on sixth position and 28 points surprisingly good. The German Bundesliga launches the second half of the season at the Jan. 14.
