Top Costa Rican soccer club Saprissa took back the leadership of the Summer Tournament during Sunday’s 15th round, thanks to a hard fought 3-2 victory over Aguilas, and loss suffered by rival Alajuelense.
Saprissa, which had been two points behind Alajuelense with 29, won as a visitor due to substitute Jairo Arrieta's goal in the second minute of injury time. Alajuelense, which entered the round as league leader, lost 1-0 to Perez Zeledon, a club which has a fighting chance of making the cut for tournament’s second phase.
In Group B, Unversidad de Costa Rica defeated Puntarenas 2-0, to escape from the relegation zone. Ramonense is now at risk of moving down following a goalless draw with San Carlos.
In the same group, Club Sport Herediano defeated current champion Brujas 2-0, leaving the team in last place and without any hope of making it through to the second phase, with just one round of the first phase left to go.
Santos de Guapiles, tied with Perez on 19 points thanks to a 2-1 victory over Cartagines. The leaders of each group will qualify automatically for the semi finals, while the next four teams will have to battle it out for a place.
