Trans-Tasman rower Shaun Quincey succeeded in his bid to row across the Tasman Sea, reaching New Zealand's Northland coast on Sunday afternoon, 54 days after setting off in his boat Tasman Trespasser.
The Auckland rower completed his 2200 km solo journey on Sunday, swimming the last 300 meters or so to make it to shore at 90 Mile Beach about 12:35 p.m. (23:35 GMT Saturday), Radio New Zealand reported.
A crowd of about 500 greeted the 25-year-old Quincey, 54 days after setting off in his 7.3-meter boat Tasman Trespasser from New South Wales in Australia on Jan. 20.
Quincey said he was tired and hungry. He had rolled at least twice, broken two oars and come close to running out of fresh water during the journey.
Quincey became the second person to row the 2200 km journey solo, following in the footsteps of his father Colin, who completed the journey in the reverse direction in 63 days in 1977.
