蜘蛛的特点是只会主观加工而不会收集资料，也就是闭门造车、坐井观天。蜘蛛式的英文词汇记忆方法的代表作有谐音记忆法、联想记忆法等等。这是将词的发音或词形与自身经历或感想相结合而创造出来的词汇记忆方法。蜘蛛式的记忆方法也是从词汇本身出发、以理解词汇为前提，所以对部分新托福词汇的记忆具有一定帮助。
新托福词汇英文词汇的记忆要分两步走。第一步是理解;第二步是记忆。在选择英文词汇助记书籍的时候，也有相应的三条考核标准：1)是否是理解性的记忆，2)对词义的讲解是否深刻，3)能涵盖多少词。

但蚂蚁式的记忆方法有两个弊端：1)对词义理解得不够充分或不够深刻;2)能够通过这类方法记忆的词数量有限。
