高考英语短文改错取材通常是类似学生的作品，以叙述文为主，内容相对完整，一般是100词左右的短文，每行平均10个词左右，每行设一个小题。该项考察内容均在考试大纲规定的范围以内，主要包括词汇、短语、句型和语法，并兼顾语篇。近几年的短文改错题设置的错误一般为，多词(2题)、少词(1--2题)、错词(5--6题)，为了考查学生辨别正误的能力，还设置了一题，该行无错。

一、错误以改动一词为原则
一般情况下，每句至多有两处错误，每处错误以改动一词为原则，即在一个词上进行改动，可以是添一词、删一词或改一词。没有错误的句子无需改动。
二、改正以一个层次为原则
在对原文中的某个词进行改动时，只能在一个层次上进行改动，要么改变改义，要么改变词性，要么改变形式，而不能既改变词义又改变词性，或既改变词性又改变形式。
三、添加或删除词以虚词居多
需要添加或删除的词一般是冠词、介词、连词、助动词、不定式符号等，而动词、名词、形容词等有实际意义的一般不添加或删除，否则会改变句子原意。
