Around the world more and more people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities. Of course, there have always been people who have looked for adventures --- those who have climbed the highest mountains, traveled into unknown parts of the world or sailed in small boats across the greatest oceans. Now, however, there are people who look for an immediate excitement from a risky activity which may only last a few minutes or even seconds.

I would consider bungee jumping to be a good example of such an activity. You jump from a high place (perhaps a bridge or a hot-air balloon) 200 metres above the ground with an elastic (有弹性的) rope tied to your ankles. You fall at up to 150 kilometres an hour until the rope stops you from hitting the ground. It is said that about 2 million people around the world have now tried bungee jumping. Other activities which most people would say are as risky as bungee jumping include jumping from tall buildings and diving into the sea from the top of high cliffs.

Why do people take part in such activities as these? Some psychologists suggest that it is because life in modern societies has become safe and boring. Not very long ago, diseases could not easily be cured, and life was a continuous battle for survival (生存).

Nowadays, according to many people, life offers little excitement. They live and work in comparatively safe conditions; they buy food in shops; and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill. The answer for some of these people is to look for danger in activities such as bungee jumping.

71. People who have looked for adventures like taking dangerous sports and activities.

72. More and more people today are trying activities such as bungee jumping.

73. An immediate excitement from a risky activity sometimes lasts a few minutes.

74. In bungee jumping, you should jump as high as you can.

75. Diving into the sea from the top of high cliffs is less risky than bungee jumping.

76. People like to take part in dangerous sports because their life is probably short of excitement.

77. From the passage, we learnt that the author tried to make people not to take part in bungee jumping.

B. Choose the best answer (根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案): ( 7分)

The law says that women should have the chance of doing the same jobs as men and earn the same as them. The reality is quite different. Women lose because, 25 years after the Equal Pay Act, many of them still get paid less than men. They lose because they do lower-paid jobs which men just wont consider. And they lose because they are the ones who interrupt a career to have children.

All this is reported in an independent study ordered by the Governments womens unite.

The biggest problem isnt equal pay in work places such as factories. It is a sort of work women do. Make a list of low-paid of jobs, then consider who does them. There can be only one answer --- because they are women. This is not going to be put right overnight (一夜之间). But the Government, which employs a lot of them, and other bosses have to make a start.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Last Thursday, I travelled on the 8:40 a.m. train from Glasgow to London Kings Cross and I was very unhappy with the service provided by your company.

The train was forty minutes late leaving Glasgow, and although the guard apologized, we were not given any reasons for the delay. We then had further delays when the train crew(乘务员) changed at Preston and had to wait another thirty minutes. As a result, I missed my fight from London Heathrow to Frankfurt and had to wait for several hours.

Whats more, the service on the train was also very poor. The trip takes over five hours. Unluckily, there was no restaurant car on the train and only a bar with soft drinks. Worst of all, the air conditioning broke down half-way through the trip and it got hotter and hotter in the train. However, there was no apology for this, and before we reached Kings Cross, the temperature was over 40℃.

I view of the poor service, I feel I am entitled to compensation(有权索赔).

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

David Robertson
