2011年实用口语练习
① We all wore festive costumes to the ball.
我们都穿着节日的盛装前去参加舞会。
在这个句子中，ball是“舞会的意思。
②短语on the ball表示的是“有知识，有才华，办事利索等意思。
He is a teacher who is really on the ball. 他是个了不起的老师。
那么，由此类推，have nothing on the ball就是“没有才华，办事不利的意思了。
a student who has nothing on the ball 学得一塌糊涂的学生
③有时候，我们还会用ball这个词来指代某件事情或者某个任务，比如：
The ball is in your court now. 现在球已到你那边了。(言下之意即得由你做决定了)
I am glad you have started the ball rolling. 很高兴你把这事推动起来了。
④ 我们知道fireball是“火球的意思，在日常表达中其实也常常引申为“成功、热情、精力旺盛之意。例如：
I hope John will join us, he is a fireball (or he is a ball of fire). 我希望约翰能加入我们，他是个精力旺盛的人。
⑤ a ball of fortune fortune有“命运的意思，a ball of fortune就是被命运踢来踢去的球，引申为受命运摆布的人，命运多舛的人。例如：
He has been a ball of fortune from his childhood. 从童年开始他就是一个命运多舛的人。
⑥ have (onself) a ball 在口语中是玩得开心，玩得痛快的意思，相当于我们常说的have a good time
