小学生对学习方法的理解、掌握和熟练应用是在课堂学习和学科教学的过程中，经过不同形式的反复练习来实现的，同其他知识技能的学习一样，也要经历由被动到主动、由不自觉到自觉、由具体化到系统化、由不熟练到熟练的过程。
小学生学习方法辅导的主要目的就在于提高小学生掌握和运用科学学习方法的主动性和自觉性，加速和促进其系统化和熟练化。学习方法的内容是相当广泛的，不同年级、不同学习阶段和不同学科有不同的学习方法，即使同一学科，不同的学习者其学习方法也各有不同。
小学生学习方法辅导主要是帮助小学生理解和掌握制定学习计划的方法、预习的方法、听课的方法、复习的方法和写作业的方法。
