英语专业四级考试常见词辨析：“禁不住”的诱惑

　　这些词组均表示不得不，不禁之意。

　　cannot help与动名词连用，表示不得不是口语用法，词组中的help相当于avoid或prevent，是一种比较好的用法。

　　I cannot help worrying to hear that there is no steamer this week.（我听到本周没有船的消息，禁不住担忧起来。）

　　cannot but : 后跟不定式连用，是一种较正式的用法，主要用于美国英语。

　　I cannot but hope the candid reader will give some allowance for it.（我只有希望公正的读者多少包涵一些。）

　　cannot help but : 跟动词不定式连用，是cannot but与cannot help的混用，系书面用语，多用于美国英语。由于cannot help but含有双重否定，所以有人反对使用，认为不合习惯，但此表达法已经沿用下来。
