Passage 1
Im usually fairly skeptical about any research that concludes that people are either happier or unhappier or more or less certain of themselves than they were 50 years ago. While any of these statements might be true, they are practically impossible to prove scientifically. Still, I was struck by a report which concluded that todays children are significantly more anxious than children in the 1950s. In fact, the analysis showed, normal children aged 9 to 17 exhibit a higher level of anxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago.
Why are Americas kids so stressed? The report cites two main causes: increasing physical isolationbrought on by high divorce rates and less involvement in community, among other thingsand a growing perception that the world is a more dangerous place.
Given that we cant turn the clock back, adults can still do plenty to help the next generation cope.
At the top of the list is nurturing(培育)a better appreciation of the limits of individualism. No child is an island. Strengthening social ties helps build communities and protect individuals against stress.
To help kids build stronger connections with others, you can pull the plug on TVs and computers. Your family will thank you later. They will have more time for face-to-face relationships, and they will get more sleep.
Limit the amount of virtual(虚拟的)violence your children are exposed to. Its not just video games and movies; children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news.
Keep your expectations for your children reasonable. Many highly successful people never attended Harvard or Yale.
Make exercise part of your daily routine. It will help you cope with your own anxieties and provide a good model for your kids. Sometimes anxiety is unavoidable. But it doesnt have to ruin your life.
21. The author thinks that the conclusions of any research about peoples state of mind are .
A) surprising B) confusing
C) illogical D) questionable
22. What does the author mean when he says, we cant turn the clock back ?
A) Its impossible to slow down the pace of change.
B) The social reality children are facing cannot be changed.
C) Lessons learned from the past should not be forgotten.
D) Its impossible to forget the past.
23. According to an analysis, compared with normal children today, children treated as mentally ill 50 years ago .
A) were less isolated physically
B) were probably less self-centered
C) probably suffered less from anxiety
D) were considered less individualistic
24. The first and most important thing parents should do to help their children is .
A) to provide them with a safer environment
B) to lower their expectations for them
C) to get them more involved socially
D) to set a good model for them to follow
25. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?
A) Anxiety, though unavoidable, can be coped with.
B) Childrens anxiety has been enormously exaggerated.
C) Childrens anxiety can be eliminated with more parental care.
D) Anxiety, if properly controlled, may help children become mature.
Im usually fairly skeptical about any research that concludes that中的be skeptical about是同义替换。
B。we cant turn the clock back句子本意是我们不能让时光倒流,引申义是我们不可能改变既定的事实。
In fact, the analysis showed, normal children ages 9 to 17 exhibit a higher level of anxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago.(be treated mentally ill意思是be treated for mental illness)告诉我们,答案是C。
C。The first and most important thing意即首要的是,与第四段中的at the top of the list是同义替换。 At the top of the list is nurturing(培育)a better appreciation of the limits of individualism. No child is an island. Strengthening social ties helps build communities and protect individuals against stress.
Sometimes anxiety is unavoidable. But it doesnt have to ruin your life.
Passage 2
About six years ago I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when a woman and a young boy sat down at the next table. I couldnt help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point the woman asked: So, how have you been? And the boywho could not have been more than seven or eight years oldreplied, Frankly, Ive been feeling a little depressed lately.
This incident stuck in my mind because it confirmed my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didnt find out we were depressed until we were in high school.
The evidence of a change in children has increased steadily in recent years. Children dont seem childlike anymore. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to.
Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it certainly is different. Childhood as it once was no longer exists. Why?
Human development is based not only on innate(天生的)biological states, but also on patterns of access to social knowledge. Movement from one social role to another usually involves learning the secrets of the new status. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages: traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders.
In the last 30 years, however, a secret-revelation(揭示)machine has been installed in 98 percent of American homes. It is called television. Television passes information, and indiscriminately(不加区分地), to all viewers alike, be they children or adults. Unable to resist the temptation, many children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging, more vivid moving pictures.
Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information to which children have access. Reading and writing involve a complex code of symbols that must be memorized and practiced. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials.
31. According to the author, feeling depressed is _______.
A) a sure sign of a psychological problem in a child
B) something hardly to be expected in a young child
C) an inevitable phase of childrens mental development
D) a mental scale present in all humans, including children
32. Traditionally, a child is supposed to learn about the adult world _______.
A) through contact with society
B) gradually and under guidance
C) naturally and by biological instinct
D) through exposure to social information
33. The phenomenon that todays children seem adultlike is attributed by the author to _______.
A) the widespread influence of television
B) the poor arrangement of teaching content
C) the fast pace of human intellectual development
D) the constantly rising standard of living
34. Why is the author in favor of communication through print for children?
A) It enables children to gain more social information.
B) It develops childrens interest in reading and writing.
C) It helps children to memorize and practice more.
D) It can control what children are to learn.
35. What does the author think of the change in todays children?
A) He feels amused by chair premature behavior.
B) He thinks it is a phenomenon worthy of note.
C) He considers it a positive development.
D) He seems to be upset about it.
文中的slowly and in stages与选项B中的gradually意义相同。
