SAT考试，词汇是基础，特别是SAT填空题是专门考察词汇的。但是，背单词量是一方面，更重要的是质。
例如，有些我们很熟悉的单词并非是只考察它常见的意思，而更多的是考察其不太常用的第五甚至第六层的含义，就是我们平时说的 熟词僻义 。因此我们在平时就需要做大量的练习，培养起那种多角度领会词义的状态。例如：inch做动词理解为 一英寸一英寸般的缓慢前进 ，ground做动词时便是 以 为基础 等意思。
此外，还必须准确掌握一些单词的特殊用法，只有这样你才能在SAT填空或者写作时收放自如。这方面有个很典型的例子就是：在做过很多题后我们很容易发现有很多规律都是出题中心多年来的习惯，出题中心总是提倡要有创新精神，反对墨守成规，这一点从出题中心多年来不断挑战达尔文的进化论和弗洛伊德的精神分析法可略见一斑。
还要掌握的是单词的同义词、反义词和相关词。例如，我们在看到implausible和correct一起出现的时候就要把它们当作是一组反义词，而表达implausible这个词意的时候还会用到impossible，unlikely，unpractical，unreasonable等词;在表达correct这个词意的时候又会用到feasible，accurate，right，possible，real，genuine，unfeigned等词。
词根词缀也很重要，例如bipartisanship, aerodynamics这样的单词在通常的阅读中几乎见不到，专业性很强的词汇也很难完全覆盖。但是这是只要你知道bi-，aero-两个词缀同时知道partisanship，dynamics两个词根的意思，就可以很容易地猜出它们的意思分别是两党制和空气动力学。
因此，同学们在背单词时不仅要努力扩大词汇量，更要掌握熟词僻义和特殊用法，同时利用近义词、反义词、词根词缀来训练自己猜测词义的能力。
