Human relations have commanded peoples attention from early times. The ways of people have been recorded in innumerable myths, folktales, novels, poems, plays, and popular or philosophical essays.

  划线部分的 The ways of people指代的是什么?

  Human relations

Although the full significance of a human relationship may not be directly evident, the complexity of feelings and actions that can be understood at a glance is surprisingly great.

  Although

Although the significance may not be evident, the complexity is great.

是human relationship 和complexity of feelings and actions的对比,还是full significance和at a glance之间的对比呢?

  Full significance

  At a glance

  Complexity of feelings and actions

For this reason psychology holds a unique position among the sciences. Intuitive knowledge may be remarkably penetrating and can significantly help us understand human behavior, whereas in the physical sciences such commonsense knowledge is relatively primitive.

  Psychology

  Whereas

  Intuitive knowledge

If we erased all knowledge of scientific physics from our modem word, not only would we not have cars and television sets, we might even find that the ordinary person was unable to cope with the fundamental mechanical problems of pulleys and levers.

On the other hand if we removed all knowledge of scientific psychology from our world, problems in interpersonal relations might easily be coped with and solved much as before.

  On the other hand

We would still know how to avoid doing something asked of us and how to get someone to agree with us; we would still know when someone was angry and when someone was pleased. One could even offer sensible explanations for the whys of much of the selfs behavior and feelings.

  intuitive knowledge

In other words, the ordinary person has a great and profound understanding of the self and of other people which, though unformulated or only vaguely conceived, enables one to interact with others in more or less adaptive ways.

  In other word

Understanding of the self and of other people

  Scientific psychology

Kohler, in referring to the lack of great discoveries in psychology as compared with physics, accounts for this by saying that people were acquainted with practically all territories of mental life a long time before the founding of scientific psychology.

Paradoxically, with all this natural, intuitive, commonsense capacity to grasp human relations, the science of human relations has been one of the last to develop.

Paradoxically?

结合上文, people were acquainted with before the founding of scientific psychology和the science of human relations has been one of the last develop.

Different explanations of this paradox have been suggested.

One is that science would destroy the vain and pleasing illusions people have about themselves; but we might ask why people have always loved to read pessimistic, debunking writings, fromEcclesiastes to Freud.

Pessimistic, debunk和vain, pleasing

It has also been proposed that just because we know so much about people intuitively, there has been less incentive for studying them scientifically; why should one develop a theory, carry out systematic observations, or make predictions about the obvious?

In any case, the field of human relations, with its vast literary documentation but meager scientific treatment, is in great contrast to the field of physic in which there are relatively few nonscientific books.

  Vast literary documentation

第一段的,innumerable myths, folktales, novels, poems, plays, and popular or philosophical essays

the field of human relation 和the field of physic的关系是?

  Contrast

Many theories have been formulated to explain the role of grazers such as zooplankton in controlling the amount of planktonic algae in lakes.

  Grazer=zooplankton,planktonic algae=phytoplankton

The first theories of such grazer control were merely based on observations of negative correlations between algal and zooplankton numbers.

  Such grazer

  Zooplankton

  Merely

A low number of algal cells in the presence of a high number of grazers suggested, but did not prove, that the grazers had removed most of the algae.

The converse observation, of the absence of grazers in areas of high phytoplankton concentration, led Hardy to propose his principle of animal exclusion, which hypothesized that phytoplankton produced a repellent that excluded grazers from regions of high phytoplankton concentration.

Converse observation led Hardy to propose his principle

  Converse observation

  和上一句形成了对比,phytoplankton=algae

  Hardy

  Animal exclusion

This was the first suggestion of algal defenses against grazing.

Perhaps the fact that many of these first studies considered only algae of a size that could be collected in a net , a practice that overlooked the smaller phytoplankton that we now know grazers are most likely to feed on, led to a de-emphasis of the role of grazers in subsequent research.

The fact led to de-emphasis of the role of grazers.

The fact的内容是导致de-emphasis of the role of grazers的原因,所以又是一个因果关系的句子。

  Overlooked

  Only algae of a size

  Overlooked the smaller phytoplankton

  Grazers

Increasingly, as in the individual studies of Lund, Round, and Reynolds, researchers began to stress the importance of environmental factors such as temperature, light, and water movements in controlling algal numbers.

  Increasingly

  Temperature,light,and water movements

  Controlling algal numbers

These environmental factors were amenable to field monitoring and to simulation in the laboratory.

  Temperature,light,and water movements

Grazing was believed to have some effect on algal numbers, especially after phytoplankton growth rates declined at the end of bloom periods, but grazing was considered a minor component of models that predicted algal population dynamics .

  Grazing

  Grazer

上文说的是非grazer的原因,在这重新开始讨论grazer的作用,所以这句话的前半句等同于although grazing was believed to have some effect on algal numbers

De-emphasize of the role of the grazers.

  Algal population dynamic

  Algae

The potential magnitude of grazing pressure on freshwater phytoplankton has only recently been determined empirically.

  Magnitude

  Some effect,minor component

  Grazing pressure

  Only recently

Studies by Hargrave and Geen estimated natural community grazing rates by measuring feeding rates of individual zooplankton species in the laboratory and then computing community grazing rates for field conditions using the known population density of grazers.

  Magnitude of grazing pressure

  natural community grazing rate如何被estimate?

通过measuring feeding rates以及computing community grazing rates

The high estimates of grazing pressure postulated by these researchers were not fully accepted, however, until the grazing rates of zooplankton were determined directly in the field, by means of new experimental techniques.

这种high estimates were not fully accepteduntil意味着什么?

  Until

Rates were determined in the field

Using a specially prepared feeding chamber, Haney was able to record zooplankton grazing rates in natural field conditions.

  Feeding chamber

  New techinique

  Zooplankton grazing rates

In the periods of peak zooplankton abundance, that is, in the late spring and in the summer, Haney recorded maximum daily community grazing rates, for nutrient-poor lakes and bog lakes, respectively, of 6.6 percent and 114 percent of daily phytoplankton production.

Cladocerans had higher grazing rates than copepods, usually accounting for 80 percent of the community grazing rate.

These rates varied seasonally, reaching the lowest point in the winter and early spring.

  Peak abundance,

Haneys thorough research provides convincing field evidence that grazers can exert significant pressure on phytoplankton population.

Thomas Hardys impulses as a writer, all of which he indulged in his novels, were numerous and divergent, and they did not always work together in harmony.

  Numerous and divergent

  Did not always work together

Hardy was to some degree interested in exploring his characters psychologies, though impelled less by curiosity than by sympathy.

  Characters psychologies, curiosity, sympathy

Occasionally he felt the impulse to comedy as well as the impulse to farce, but he was more often inclined to see tragedy and record it.

  Comedy, farce和tragedy

  Tragedy

He was also inclined to literary realism in the several senses of that phrase.

  Literary realism

He wanted to describe ordinary human beings; he wanted to speculate on their dilemmas rationally ; and he wanted to record precisely the material universe.

  Hardys impulses

Finally, he wanted to be more than a realist. He wanted to transcend what he considered to be the banality of solely recording things exactly and to express as well his awareness of the occult and the strange.

  Hardy

  To transcend and to express

Not transcend banality of solely recording things exactly and not express his awareness

In his novels these various impulses were sacrificed to each other inevitably and often.

Numerous and divergent, not always work together

  Sacrificed

  Not always work together

Inevitably, because Hardy did not care in the way that novelists such as Flaubert or James cared, and therefore took paths of least resistance. Thus, one impulse often surrendered to a fresher one and, unfortunately, instead of exacting a compromise, simply disappeared.

  有标志词because和thus。

  Took path of resistance

A desire to throw over reality a light that never was might give way abruptly to the desire on the part of what we might consider a novelist-scientist to record exactly and concretely the structure and texture of a flower.

That a desire might give way abruptly to the desire was never to throw over reality a light.

  Hardys impulses

In this instance, the new impulse was at least an energetic one, and thus its indulgence did not result in a relaxed style.

The desire on the part of what we might consider novelist-scientist

But on other occasions Hardy abandoned a perilous, risky, and highly energizing impulse in favor of what was for him the fatally relaxing impulse to classify and schematize abstractly.

When a relaxing impulse was indulged, the stylethat sure index of an authors literary worthwas certain to become verbose.

  Relaxed

Hardys weakness derived from his apparent inability to control the comings and goings of these divergent impulses and from his unwillingness to cultivate and sustain the energetic and risky ones.

  Hardys weakness

  Hardys weakness

Inability to control and unwillingness to cultivate

He submitted to first one and then another, and the spirit blew where it listed; hence the unevenness of any one of his novels.

  Divergent impulses

His most controlled novel, Under the Greenwood Tree, prominently exhibits two different but reconcilable impulsesa desire to be a realist-historian and a desire to be a psychologist of lovebut the slight interlockings of plot are not enough to bind the two completely together. Thus even this book splits into two distinct parts.

支持说明前文的观点: unevenness of any one of his novel

Modern archaeological finds can still contribute much to the study of ancient literature.

For example, forty years ago a survey of the early Greek dramatist Aeschylus plays would have started with The Suppliant Women.

  Forty years ago对应still

Greek dramatist Aeschylus plays=The Suppliant Women=ancient literature

Many factors internal to the play, but perhaps most especially the prominence of the chorus , led scholars to consider it one of Aeschylus earlier works. The consensus was that here was a drama truly reflecting an early stage in the evolution of tragedy out of choral lyric.

  The Suppliant Women

  Here was a drama,这里的drama指的是?

  The Suppliant Women

Consensus, reflecting an early stage in the evolution of tragedy out of choral lyric

The play was dated as early as the 490s B.C., in any event , well before Aeschylus play The Persians of 472 B.C.

  The play

  The Suppliant Women

led scholars to consider it one of Aeschylus earlier works,认为The Suppliant Women是早期作品

Then, in 1952, a fragment of papyrus found at Oxyrhynchus was published stating the official circumstances and results of a dramatic contest.

The fragment announced that Aeschylus won first prize with his Danaid tetralogy, of which The Suppliant Women is the opening play, and defeated Sophocles in the process.

Sophocles

Sophocles did not compete in any dramatic contest before 468 B.C., when he won his first victory. Hence, except by special pleading , the Danaid tetralogy must be put after 468 B.C.

In addition, a few letters in the fragment suggest the name Archedemides, archon in 463 B.C., thus perhaps tying the plays to that precise date, almost exactly halfway between Aeschylus Seven Against Thebes of 467 B.C. and his Oresteia.

  In addition

  The play

  The Suppliant Women

Seven Against Thebes of 467 B.C. 和 his Oresteia之间。

The implication of the papyrus administered a severe shock to the vast majority of classical scholars, who had confidently asserted that not only the role of the chorus but also language, metrics, and characterization all pointed to an early date.

  The implication administered a shock

  The implication

  The fragment of papyrus,

If it is a weakness to harbor feelings, then rhetoric may be thought of as dealing in weakness.

But those who reject the idea of rhetoric because they believe it deals in lies and who at the same time hope to move people to action, must either be liars themselves or be very naive; pure logic has never been a motivating force unless it has been subordinated to human purposes, feelings, and desires, and thereby ceased to be pure logic.

Those must either be liars themselves or be very nave。

Who reject and who at the same time

这里的hope to move people to action等同于什么?

  Persuade them

  Rhetoric

Pure logic has never been a motivating force仅有logic是不足够的,除非还有rhetoric

The discovery has resulted in no less than a total reevaluation of every chronological criterion that has been applied to or derived from Aeschylus plays.

  The discovery

  出土的fragment of papyrus

The activity has been brisk, and a new creed has now spread. The prominence of the chorus in The Suppliant Women now is seen not as a sign of primitivism but as analogous to the massive choral songs of the Oresteia.

  Analogous

Statistics have been formulated, or reformulated, to show that stylistically The Suppliant Women does actually occupy a position after The Persians and Seven Against Thebes, which now become the primitive plays, and before the Oresteia.

After The Persians and Seven Against Thebes, which now become the primitive plays.

是在The Persians and Seven Against Thebes这个作品之后,早于Oresteia这个作品的。

The Suppliant Women是继 The Persians and Seven Against Thebes之后的作品,而The Persians and Seven Against Thebes是遭遇Oresteia的。

  Analogous

The Persians and Seven Against Thebes是A的更早期的作品

While the new doctrine seems almost certainly correct, the one papyrus fragment raises the specter that another may be unearthed, showing, for instance, that it was a posthumous production of the Danaid tetralogy which bested Sophocles, and throwing the date once more into utter confusion.

  Another papyrus fragment

  Another may be unearthed

  Archaeology

This is unlikely to happen, but it warns us that perhaps the most salutary feature of the papyrus scrap is its message of the extreme difficulty of classifying and categorizing rigidly the development of a creative artist.

  Papyrus scrap

  Papyrus fragment

A scientistic view of language was dominant among philosophers and linguists who affected to develop a scientific analysis of human thought and behavior in the early part of this century.

  View was dominant

  Philosophers and linguists的观点

  Philosophers and linguists

  Human thought and behavior

Under the force of this view, it was perhaps inevitable that the art of rhetoric should pass from the status of being regarded as of questionable worth to the status of being wholly condemned.

  This view

  Scientistic view

  it was perhaps inevitable 中的it指代的是什么?

That引导的从句:the art of rhetoric should pass from

Rhetoric的作用变得重要了还是不重要了,under the force of this view?

Pass from the status of being regarded as of questionable worth to the status of being wholly condemned.

  Questionable worth

  所以在这里,this view认为the art of rhetoric怎么样?

Wholly condemned

If people are regarded only as machines guided by logic, as they were by these scientistic thinkers, rhetoric is likely to be held in low regard; for the most obvious truth about rhetoric is that it speaks to the whole person.

Guided by logic = guided by these scientistic thinkers

可是人们是only as machines guided by logic嘛?

The most obvious truth about rhetoric is that it speaks to the whole person.

It presents its arguments first to the person as a rational being, because persuasive discourse, if honestly conceived, always has a basis in reasoning. Logical argument is the plot, as it were, of any speech or essay that is respectfully intended to persuade people.

Yet it is a characterizing feature of rhetoric that it goes beyond this and appeals to the parts of our nature that are involved in feeling, desiring, acting, and suffering. It recalls relevant instances of the emotional reactions of people to circumstancesreal or fictionalthat are similar to our own circumstances.

  指代的上文的logical argument is plot

没有logical argument,唤起我们的feeling, desiring, acting, and suffering;以及唤起我们的emotional reactions

Such is the purpose of both historical accounts and fables in persuasive discourse: they indicate literally or symbolically how people may react emotionally, with hope or fear, to particular circumstances. A speech attempting to persuade people can achieve little unless it takes into account the aspect of their being related to such hopes and fears.

  Emotionally,。

Rhetoric, then, is addressed to human beings living at particular times and in particular places.

From the point of view of rhetoric, we are not merely logical thinking machines, creatures abstracted from time and space. The study of rhetoric should therefore be considered the most humanistic of the humanities, since rhetoric is not directed only to our rational selves.

  Humanistic,not rational

It takes into account what the scientistic view leaves out .

  Rhetoric view
