The security forces in Egypt have finally dispersed thousands of demonstrators after hours of clashes near the defence ministry in Cairo. A nighttimecurfewis being imposed on the area. The authorities said an army conscript died of his wounds. Hundreds of people were injured, and there have been many arrests. From Cairo, Jon Leyne.
It all began as protesters outside the defence ministry in Cairo started attacking the building. They tried to break through a protective ring ofbarbed wire, something they must have known would provoke fury from the military. Soldiersrespondedwithwater cannon and tear gas. Both sides threw rocks at each other in clashes that lasted several hours. There were some brutal scenes. Eventually the army brought in reinforcements. Scores of protesters were arrested, and the army says proceedings against them have already started in military courts.
Investigators in France are looking into an allegation of possible gang rape against the former head of the International Monetary Fund, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, along with three others. Mr Strauss-Kahn says he took part in such parties but never used force on anyone. Stuart Hughes reports from Paris.
Judges investigating what's become known as the Carlton Affair after the exclusive hotel in Lille, which was allegedly the centre of aprostitution ring, are already looking into claims of pimping, the misuse of corporate funds andmoney laundering. Now they've submitted new evidence which, they say, could implicate Dominique Strauss-Kahn and other associates in a gang rape. A Belgian woman known only as Marie Anne S has alleged she was forced to take part in a sex act against her will at a party attended by Mr Strauss-Kahn at a hotel in Washington DC in December 2010.
Almost 150 people in Armenia have been injured by the explosion of clusters of gas-filled balloons at a government rally. Tens of thousands were at the event in the capital Yerevan ahead of parliamentary elections in Armenia on Sunday. Here's Damien McGuinness.

Police officials say the explosions were probably caused by a cigarette or a lighter, and for now areruling outarson. After the accident, the concert continued, and President Serzh Sargsyan gave a speech without mentioning the explosion.

Nine bodies with signs of torture were found hanging from a bridge. Hours later, 14decapitatedbodies were discovered in a vehicle. Their heads were found in ice boxes dumped outside the mayor's office. Nuevo Laredo is the scene of a feud between two of Mexico's biggest drugs gangs, who are fighting for control of smuggling routes into the US.

The United States says it expects China to move quickly to allow the legal activist Chen Guangcheng to travel abroad. The Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who's in Beijing, welcomed China's offer to let Mr Chen apply to study overseas. American diplomats have been allowed to talk to the activist at a Beijing hospital where he's been held since leavingsanctuaryin the US embassy.
The United Nations refugee agency says thousands of people in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo have been displaced by fighting between government troops and forces loyal to therenegadeGeneral Bosco Ntaganda. The UN said that since Sunday nearly 20,000 people have fled towards the regional capital Goma, and that about 1,000 people a day are crossing the border into Rwanda.
The disgraced former newspaper tycoon Conrad Black has been released after serving a three-year prison sentence in the United States fordefraudinginvestors. The Canadian-born businessman was convicted of fraud in 2007 for taking millions of dollars from the media company Hollinger International without board approval. After his release, Mr Black was flown to Canada, his country of birth, which has granted him a one-year temporary residence visa.
The American musician and rapper Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys has died in New York. He was 47 and had cancer. Yauch, who went by the stage name MCA, founded the influential hip-hop group with two friends in the 1980s. The Beastie Boys sold more than 40 million records with hits including Fight for Your Right to Party.
