Egypt's President Mohamed Mursi has backed down in the row with the prosecutor general by agreeing that he would stay in office. Mr Mursi tries to sack Abdel Maguid Mahmoud on Thursday after the prosecutoracquittedmore than 40 senior loyalist of the former President Hosni Mubarak. Chama Kellia reports.

Two days of confrontation between President Mohamed Mursi and Judiciary appear to have ended with Presidentbacking downin his attempt to sack the Prosecutor general. Vice-President Mahmoud Mekki announced that Abdel Maguid Mahmoud would remain in office. The announcement came after a meeting between President Mursi and Mr Mahmoud. Earlier on Saturday, the Prosecutor General turned up for work and made tight security defiant the President. He was supported by judges and lawyers who argued that the President did not have the constitutional right to fire the prosecutor.

The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has again criticized what he called the failure of the United Nations to stop the daily killing in Syria. Russia and China have both vetoed resolutions on Syria, and Mr Erdogan called for a reform of the UN Security Council to stop individual member'sblockingaction.

If we leave the issue to the vote of one or two of the permanent five of the United Nations Security Council, then theaftermathof Syria would be very hazardous and humanity will write it down in history with unforgettable remarks. It's high time to consider a structural change for international institutions, especially for the UN Security Council. Each day becomes more and more difficult for international institutions with unjust, unequal and inactive mechanisms to function and fulfill their duty.

Mr Erdogan's comments came as the UN and Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi held talks in Istanbul on the Syrian crisis.

Six Moroccan charities have asked the government there to reconsider new guidelines that stop foreign families fostering abandoned Moroccan children. Mike Sanders reports.

The six charities have released an internet petition that poses some tough questions. It asks the authorities if the new guideline'scompatiblewith the international and national obligations to put children's interests first. The charities say 24 babies were abandoned every day in Morocco and with too few Moroccan families coming forward to foster they want. The child traffickers will fill the gaps. The authorities tighten the restrictions after some foreign families called for the rights to adopt rather than foster, a perceived fact the children's Muslim and Moroccan identity.

Palestinian health workers in Gaza say at least one militant has been killed and three other people wounded in the latest Israeli aerial attack on the territory. Israeli's targeted a motorcycle in a busy street in northern Gazain response toa rocket fired into southern Israel on Friday.

The health authorities in the United States have reported that a 15th person has died from an outbreak of fungalmeningitisthat's been linked to steroid injections. The Centers for Disease Control said the latest death occurred in Indiana, the second in the state.

Afghan officials say a suicide bomber has killed six people in the southern province of Kandahar. A provincial spokesman said that the victims were four local intelligence officers and two members of the international force in Afghanistan.

A military spokesman in Pakistan says the 14-year-old girl Malala Yousafzai who was shot in the head by the Taliban has shown signs of improvement although she remains unconscious. The spokesman told a news conference that Malala was still on aventilator, but her sedation has been reduced and she has moved her arms and legs. During the day million of school children across Afghanistan held special prayers for her recovery. Speaking at a school in the capital Kabul, the Afghan Education Minister said Malala's attackers were enemies of education in Afghanistan and Pakistan. A teacher in an Islamist school Tayyip Saleem also condemned the militants.
